    Thank's for the response @Boards.ie: Niamh. Next week, can you please also address the issue of why PM's to reps of closed Talk To forums were not deleted at the time of forum closure (or soon after)? Whatever about this latest Vanilla incident, the information should not have even existed in the first place for it to be migrated - was the deleting of sensitive information when no longer required (or on forum closure) not part of some agreement between boards and Talk To companies? These PM's contain people's Names/DOB/Home Address etc. I'd really appreciate if this issue is addressed thanks. Speaking for myself, if I have to deal with a Talk To company again I won't be sending anything via PM.

    Assume any developer involved in the backend of a system has full access to your data (in my experience that's always the case). Of course you would expect it to be treated confidentially etc.

    Hi all

    Just a quick update on this. We are treating this very seriously. It has been escalated to Vanilla's Director of Compliance and Information Security, Chief Product Officer and Director of Development who are actively working on the issue. As a temporary step, we will be deleting all old Private messages that are older than 30 days from today August 6th, 2021 shortly.

    This will give us the time that is needed to do a proper analysis and work on restoring the migrated file correctly.

    We will update you here with next steps.

    As I don't care about what appears in my PMs, I'm not that bothered about this particular issue. But if you actually read the thread, you'd appreciate that the mood is not patient understanding at all, it's anger. And generic platitudes won't placate those posters.

    Talking as if it was some Vanilla issue. The issue was that people who decided to delete messages didn't actually know that they were in fact not deleted.

    Boards should be looking at themselves here, not Vanilla.

    I appreciate the update Odhran but surely Vanilla didn’t pull the PM’s out of their backside, as in they only retrieved what was retrievable and the explanation for that is on you. I for one am getting pretty tired of the “Vanilla this, Vanilla that, Vanilla xyz” narrative that’s coming from you and yours. When are you going to admit some fault here and be accountable for your end of things? Vanilla have nothing to do with the reason deleted zombie PMs from a decade ago have resurfaced. The fact that this data was never fully deleted is solely on you

    I’m sorry I cannot in any way see how you can start that by talking about Vanilla. Is this an attempt to imply that they are at fault?


    The data should not have existed for them to do anything with it.

    It should not have been there.

    The fact that it was restored may be vanillas remit but the fact that it EXISTED is entirely on boards.

    When you say deleted do you really mean it this time? As clearly this was not the case in the past

    So @Boards.ie: Odhran, seen as this is being taken “very seriously” by Boards is it safe to assume both your team and Vanilla will be working on this over the weekend? Or will Vanilla be taking the weekend off and getting to this on Monday afternoon sometime? You know, 72 hours from now.

    And @Boards.ie: Odhran is there any possibility you could answer some of the questions in this thread directly? Not a good look to keep running away and ignoring the community like this. Kinda makes a liar of you when you say you are taking this very seriously.

    Ive been very patient with this update and have been doing my best to try to keep on trucking with the website, hoping it'll pan out eventually.

    this recent PM issue is seriously shocking. I had PM's there back to 2007, 14 years worth!

    Names, phone numbers, address, account details, personal conversations...all there for 14 years. I can't even. The more I think about it the more shocking it gets.

    Email does not get deleted from a backup if you delete it from your inbox, indeed it may be stored indefinitely in a backup or archive.



    I am not entirely sure of the ins and outs of what people are complaining about here but it does appear there are a hell of a lot of issues post 'upgrade' that are still being ironed out.


    However the presence of a piece of personal data in a PMs mailbox is hardly a breach of GDPR in the strictest sense. No personnel data has been made public.

    In relation to 'retention' rules, there may be argument that certain data needs to be retained for one reason or another but this may be on a case by case basis and as such permanently 'deleting' data isn't always feasible.

    All that being said it does appear those messages shouldn't have reappeared but it's hardly a matter of national importance

    +1 to this. This is pretty damn serious.

    Especially that personal information that surely should have been deleted long ago, was still around and shared now to wherever, who knows.

    That's not down to Vanilla.

    Do Boards and Vanilla have the right to delete users PMs/data without their consent? Odhran seems to have unilaterally made a decision here.

    What if your last received message was over 30 days ago and you replied recently? Seeing as I cannot get into sent messages, I presume this is gone too.

    This is beyond poor at this stage. I wouldn't be surprised if this debacle is in the papers soon.

    I haven't a breeze how to use this new set up, I'm out, Ive been on here years and yes of course things change but my eyes and brain are in severe pain trying to navigate or even find anything I was interested in before....

    I'll miss the ups and downs and the laughs and of course all the help I've gotten off very informative members over the years, I hope I could help too as I did definitely give my opinion on subjects and tried to help as best as I could, I even only found this page by accident....

    Sad day but punisher5112 is out, so long folks and it was a pleasure to be part of something that was once interesting and informative.

    Thanks to everyone that contributed over the years and thanks to the mods and boards team over the years too.

    If a mod wants to get in contact with me to either explain or inform I'd be happy to hear from but to me this is a sad day for me to say goodbye and I'll miss the platform.
