Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I only managed to hear the last 15 minutes of it last weekend - hopefully I will hear more next time!

The issue seemed to be related to the Manx Radio end of the operation only.

Even online, the stream from Manx sounded like it was out of phase. It was immediately obvious on the switch over from The Carnaby Street programme originating at Manx, to the live stream from The Ross. The stream on Caroline's own site was perfect as was a direct url stream put up on Caroline's Facebook page that was originating directly from the ship. As Dave Foster said on air ... it seemed to be OK leaving The Ross.

It was disappointing that it couldn't be sorted on the Manx stream and AM signal during the whole weekend. The most promoted stream links on various websites are originated from the Manx stream.

I only had access to 1368khz for the whole of the broadcast - no internet and I don't do mobile streaming .

I just noticed that UK Regulator Ofcom, has agreed a power increase for the Radio Caroline service on 648Khz. Currently operating at 1kw from Suffolk, they will be allowed to increase power to extend the coverage to include the current anchorage position for The Ross Revenge, on the river Blackwater in Essex. The actual power increase has not been defined yet, but it is good news for Caroline.

I can hear 648 here in Wicklow occasionally (usually at night, in winter), so a power increase might help the dx effort.

Yes it's great news -- I had a 45 minute car trip last night on the Wales coast and 648khz kept me company all the way - best signal for ages so it can only get better.

There is a 3 day treat via Manx Radio on 1368khz starting 13th August through to the 15th August - the monthly link with Radio Caroline North and annual fund raiser. Schedule to follow.

Is there a web link as I don’t have a mw radio?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭Oscarziggy

Look on the Manx Radio site and choose "Listen Live" then "Listen to AM".

Radio Caroline site has a green bar in top right corner of home page which will be active .

More details about the 3 (or 4) days on the Radio Caroline home page -

    http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk/#home.html

You can also access Manx Radio on the Radio Garden platform. Remember that, with the exception of Carnaby Radio which is on both Manx Radio AM and FM, you would need to choose Manx Radio AM for the Radio Caroline North broadcasts. Incidentally, "Radio Caroline AM 648", and various other related incarnations, are also available on Radio Garden. I know from using it that it is best to stick with Manx Radio AM if you want be sure to hear Radio Caroline North broadcasts from the Ross Revenge, as Radio Caroline 648 often has it's own programming during those Radio Caroline North runs.

Just in case anyone wants to listen.... Radio Caroline is live from The Ross now (Fri), for their annual fundraising weekend. Available in these parts (Ireland, East Coast) online and on AM 1368Khz from Manx Radio. They will be live from the ship until 9pm on Sunday - regular updates about life on board are posted on their Facebook page.

Thankfully, the tech issues with webstream quality from the broadcast last month, have been sorted - sounding great now. Tomorrow (Sat) marks 54 years since the passing of the UK Marine Offences Act -I am sure they will do something to mark the occasion.

Being relayed by the Dundalk pirate on 3905 kHz, massive signal locally. Good signal on most of the SDR's in Ireland, especially North West.

3905 is in sync with the internet stream, but a couple of seconds behind 648 and 1368.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,173 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

Just tuned in now on Radio Garden. There is different programs on Radio Caroline AM 648 and Radio Caroline North on 1368 Manx Radio AM. Presumably, the Dundalk pirate is relaying the stream for Radio Caroline North on 1368.

648 and 3905 are the same at 5.30 pm, on my receiver. 1368 is a Manx Radio sports programme.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,173 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

The sports programme was on from 5 to 6 pm, a break from the Radio Caroline North project. But, other than that, the monthly Radio Caroline North is on 1368 Manx Radio AM (different programming on Manx Radio FM, except for Carnaby Street which is on every week). So, 3905 are relaying Radio Caroline 648, not Radio Caroline North, except if there is any joint programming.

Here is the schedule for Radio Caroline 648 from this morning to tomorrow evening

    00:00

    Adrian Skirrow

    02:00

The Album Zone with Johnny Reece

    05:00

    Continuous Caroline Music

    06:00

    Terry Hughes (Sitting in)

    09:00

    10:00

    Paul Brown

    13:00

    Peter Antony

    16:00

    André van Os

    19:00

    Lee Shuttlewood

    22:00

    Alan Watts (Sitting in)

    00:00

    Alan Watts (Sitting in)

    01:00

    Top Fifteen Replay

    02:00

    Continuous Caroline Music

    06:00

    Clive Derek

    09:00

    Top Fifteens

    10:00

    Pat Edison

    14:00

    Martin O'Brien (Sitting in)

    18:00

    Continuous Caroline Music

    21:00

    Alec Lamb

    23:00

The Mellow Show with Gary Ziepe

I did notice, just now when listening to Manx Radio AM, that they played a jingle "648", even though there was a different programme on Radio Caroline 648 from Bracknell-on-Sea! There is also this confusing, seemingly misleading information on their website: Listen in on 648 AM in the South and South-East, on 1368 AM in the North and North-West courtesy of our friends at Manx Radio, on the Radio Caroline app and around the world online here (via the Manx AM Radio Player).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,388 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

When I posted at 1.53 pm the three of them were the same. I just checked again at 9.23 pm. Shine on You Crazy Diamond is being played on 648, 1368 and 3905.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,173 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

I had the first two on via Radio Garden at that time too! Lee Shuttlewood was on playing a different track at that time on Radio Caroline AM 648. He is playing Freefall by Camel now! I will just check 1368 Manx Radio AM now: Somebody to Love by Queen, presumably played by Dave Foster. Maybe 648 AM is only different online.

Just a note to mention that Caroline in the last few days has implemented the power increase granted to them by OFCOM - believed to be from 1Kw up to 4Kw on their 648Khz from Orfordness.

Certainly coming through much more here in the (Irish) midlands on these winter evenings following the increase. Not "normal listener" quality, but certainly clearly audible at times in the evening.

    Steve

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,173 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

It was mentioned recently in the Bandscan Thread too. I believe that, before this recent power increase, you have to go back to the early days of the Ross Revenge in the 1980s for the last time that Radio Caroline could be picked up on the analogue radio in Ireland!

Still listening to MANX radio, albeit rather sporadically, on the 1368 Khz on tne AM band in Dublin and the signal has been really clear for some time now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭Ger Roe

Manx have been taking very good care of their AM TX - relatively recently refurbed. At one stage they were thinking of letting it go, but the reaction, particularly to the Radio Caroline North link up, persuaded them not only to continue, but to improve the signal quality and coverage. They currently list the power output as 20Kw and their audio is the best quality you will hear on AM.

The great 1368, ..... '20Kw power, from the middle of the plantation, in the middle of the island, in the middle of the Irish Sea' (as Chris Williams announces on his iconic 'Carnaby Street' programme) - long may it continue. When they are relaying on AM from The Ross Revenge, it reminds me of that first Saturday night in August 1983 when Caroline returned after the sinking of the Mi Amigo ..... the signal rolled in to Dublin on the car radio just as it got dark and I heard Tony Gareth (O'Callaghan) on board The Ross for its first evening on air, giving out the mailing address for reception reports.

It's still great to hear a radio ship broadcasting on AM and I never thought I would still be able to hear that same ship on air in 2022.

The next link up is 12th/13th February and this from the Radio Caroline FB page --

"Please give a warm Radio Caroline welcome to our newest - and youngest - presenter, JOSH HOLMES-BRIGHT. Sixteen-year-old Josh makes his debut on Radio Caroline North next weekend and you will soon be able to hear him hosting the Caroline Countdown show on the album channel. Josh is no stranger to broadcasting, he is a presenter on a couple of radio stations, including Caroline Community Radio where we first spotted him. We are impressed with his talent and personality, not to mention his music tastes and knowledge, which make him a great fit for Radio Caroline. It's great to have you on board Josh!"

The new lad they have on board, Josh Holmes-Bright, is doing a great job. The station and DJ's are getting to an age where succession plans have to be made and I was wondering how it might sound if younger jocks were brought in to do a presentation by numbers role - without direct connection to the offshore days. Young Josh (16yrs?) has done a great job though .... he fits right in to the Caroline groove and just gets the idea, naturally.

Great to see the 'heritage' studio operating this weekend too, record decks and cart machines fired up again for the first time in many years. I was in that studio in 2004 when a few of us from Phantom accompanied Steve Conway on his first visit back to the ship, since the RAF lifted him off it in 1991. At that time, the offshore era studio was a non functioning museum display with the programmes coming from the adjacent PC controlled studio. The restoration work has been amazing since then, first 'The Overdrive studio' downstairs was restored and now the main offshore era studio is fully functioning - great work by the dedicated volunteer team.

I must make plans for a return trip - from recent pics, even the engine room looks a lot cleaner and safer than when we crawled around it in the gloomy light for an unofficial access all areas tour.

The pic below was taken yesterday as Chris Pearson prepared to go live from the heritage studio.

More pics and updates on their Facebook page, before closedown from the ship at 9pm tonight.

It has improved certainly Ger - Catherine and I went out to the ship for a visit during our honeymoon in 2015 (clearly the ideal romantic getaway location!!) and I was very impressed with how clean and liveable it was compared to when I had last been on board on that visit with you.

It's nice, also, that you have to get to it by boat, adds back some of the authenticity.

    Steve

Not tempted yourself, Steve, to do a stint on the Ross Revenge, if you were given the opportunity? I would definitely make a point of listening if you did, as I missed all your previous times with Caroline!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭Ger Roe

I was about to post the same thing... it would be great to hear you on the air and sea/river waves again. I could easily imagine you doing a night time prog on vinyl from The Overdrive Studio and throwing in a few memories of life on board in the 80's - Just what the 'North' weekends need. Have a word with Mr Foster.

Glad to hear you were back on board too .... and a woman who would take time out of her honeymoon to visit a pirate radio ship, is a rare find ... congratulations 😁
