Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    ROUND ONE

    The Jem'Hadar fighter

    VS

    Constitution Refit

It kind of has to be the Constitution refi, it's iconic.

    Constitution refit

My vote is my revenge for the Jemhadar attack on The Odyssey!

Afraid I disagree. Just because a ship is iconic does not mean it would win it depends on the crew too and of it was Kirk and co maybe they would have some change now if it was the crew from the Cerritos then not a hope. The Jam Hadar fighter is faster more maneuverable and better armed so it would win in a fight but if its just looks then ye give it to the Constitution refit.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

We're basing this competition on looks, aren't we?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,135 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Yep. Comparing ships from different eras tactically is a bit tricky. We can be as superficial and fussy as we want...

Does that mean I'll only get attention from the Daedalus classes here?

Right, voting closed. Pretty desisive that one!!

The Jem Hadar attack ships have been eliminated. Although in DS9 these ships were very explody. Almost like they were a giant console or something.

Anyhow, the Constitution Refit survives to the next round.

    Two new ships tomorrow!

    Nebula Class

Nebula Class. I actually think it looks better than the Galaxy class with the right pod.

    Definitely Nebula class.

Is there actual voting on this or is it just leaving a comment? Not a fan of the new site.

Yikes, two ugly ships. Hmmm. So let's sayyyyyyyy, Nebula. Even if it looks like an overdesigned kitchen appliance

    Nebula Class

Commenting is how a lot of these kinds of threads are normally done. Sometimes it's a timeframe and sometimes it could be first to get a certain number of votes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭Rawr

    Nebula Class.

But only with that triangular weapons pod on it. The mini-saucer thing on the original Nebula was fugly as all hell.

Nebula. But only from the front or side. The aft view is not good.

Not seen enough of the Luna yet

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,728 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

Apologies for the delay, been travelling a lot today.

    It's another one sided battle.

But the Luna class is knocked out. Riker will not be happy.

The Nebula lives to fight another day.

The show is a chaotic mess, and the recent episode turning the interior into a TARDIS a travesty ... but I love the Ralph McQuarrie inspired design of the ship. Different, but still designed. Not like the designers just messed with the scale of a Constitution class.

The Borg is more iconic for sure, but there's no actual aesthetics to speak of (naturally, given the creatures in question). I wouldn't want to own a Cube, like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,805 ✭✭✭Evade

Crossfields have far too many things that irritate me about the design, just because it's McQuarrie doesn't automatically mean it's good, so the Borg Cube it is. The First Contact and beyond cubes with the green light and openings in the hull were big improvements over the initial model.

I just noticed in the Nebula gif the mission pod makes shuttle bay access more restricted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,522 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

Borg cube by default for me even though it too is nothing special. Crosfields are awful.

I am very surprised the Nebula whitewashed the Luna also 😧

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭Rawr

    The Borg Cube.

    Resistance is....something

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

No, no automatic goodness applied, I just genuinely think McQuarrie flattened ship profile(s) lent some 70s chic to the Federation portfolio. Now, I think his actual design is much nicer than the "inspired" version we're voting on (would that have qualified had it been put forward actually? Given it never featured in any eventual series). It's just the Borg Cube... is. It feels like cheating to include a basic geometric shape in a poll of aesthetics. Yes, I'm doing it; I'm being the killjoy 😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,553 ✭✭✭✭Skerries

it may be a cube but it's a BIG cube!

    Borg Cube for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,474 ✭✭✭Niska

Borg Cube - it's lack of aesthetics is part of it's menace / charm.

The original MacQuarrie concept is ugly too, the proportions are completely off. But credit where it's due the primary hull/secondary hull/nacelle proportions are much better on the Crossfield, could still be better though.

I would certainly agree there. The Crossfield is a bit better than this one:

The smaller saucer always seemed a bit off. However, the whole rotating pizza-cutter dynamic of the spore-drive just throws me off ever enjoying the Crossfield class.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,728 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

Bit more of a debate with these two ships,

but the Borg cube wins the vote.....for now.

The Crossfield class joins the growing list of eliminated ships.

    Chimera class (STO)

    VS

    Steamrunner Class

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,805 ✭✭✭Evade

Chimera class really lives up to its name and doesn't gel at all so Steamrunner. I used to love them in Star Trek Armada II with their beyond line of sight sight torpedo range, even more so if you could acquire a cloaked ship to use as a spotter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,522 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

Oh, even though I nominated it the Chimera loses out for me. The Steamrunner is such a great looking ship.

Completely different layout and quirky for a canon ship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,135 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Steamrunner, rugged compact look and some nifty scenes in First Contact to show it off...

Steamrunner - the other looks like something they threw together to bulk out the roster in the video-game!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭Rawr

Steamrunner. Really felt like a design evolution of the flat-profile warship that started with Defiant. For some reason I really like how the bussard collectors gel into the Primary Hull.

I'm kind of a sucker for most of the starships ILM designed for First Contact :)

Yeah. Distinct designs that still fit within the design aesthetic of the older ships. I should have nominated the Norway and Saber classes too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,728 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

    This is pretty one sided.

The Chimera returns to the STO ship selection while the Steamrunner aint out of steam yet.

    Constellation Class

    VS

    Klingon Bird of Prey

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

  • Registered Users Posts: 900 ✭✭✭sameoldname

Bird of Prey for me. What other ship could travel back through time, crush a garbage can, deflect a harpoon, kidnap George and Gracie and crash into the sea all in one film? It was the real hero in that movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,135 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    I like the Constellation class.

But Bird of Prey gets the vote... in that image it projects menace and threat like a predator.

This is a rather neat version of the Constellation from STO

Bird of Prey it's the perfect design for its role and seemingly the Klingon version of the Miranda class with the century long service life. Constellation isn't bad but just not good enough here.

Kirk and co. got really lucky with the HMS Bounty, D'oq B'rown being the former captain meant it was probably already set up for time travel.

    Bird of Prey, no contest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭Rawr

I'm a sucker for the Bird of Prey. Beyond the Jem Hadar attack ship, by far the most dangerous looking ship in Trek, but also oddly beautiful and even managed a carry a whole Trek movie really well (when Trek was *always* on the Enterprise until that point)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

It also felt in keeping with the Klingons, especially regards their status as Space Vikings; like longboats coming up your river, seeing that ship profile would be emotive, and that you felt was the point. While Trek's races could be culturally very simplistic, it didn't always show in their ship design; the Klingons being an exception unlike, say, the Cardassians - whose ships didn't really convey any sense of the crews' personality IMO.

    Bird of Prey.

Constellation Class looks like it's trying too hard

    Another one sided match!

The Constellation goes like the Stargazer!

And The Bird of Prey lives to stalk another day.
