  • If every merchant crew in the world decided to take a week off the planet would actually grind to a halt.
    The Public, and the Governments they elect, have no appreciation of the vital nature of the Global maritime cargo trade.
    No offence to fast food workers, but most fast food workers earn more, and have better T&Cs to the majority of able bodied seafarers. In 1990, as a Cadet, I still earned more per month than the A/Bs I worked alongside, and my home wasn't on the other side of the world to where we traded.
    The race to the bottom continues, and the Global shutdown has made it worse. Crews are being actively abandoned by ship owners, and the numerous management companies they have in between.
    The ITF has a voice, but it is largely ignored outside Europe, the US and Australasia. Even then the continued acceptance of FoC ships feeds the race to the bottom.
    Unfortunately it's only when it starts costing the likes of Lloyds lots of money will they be forced to sit up and take note.

    Yeah, they sent out an email last week saying they are delaying a return further.

    Grimaldi have been doing freight to Cork weekly for years. I don't see how their new route should impact Brittany Ferries in any way. Brittany ferries weren't going to Antwerp.

    Thank you for that. I just thought that the timing of the new Grimaldi RO RO service and the scarcity of Brittany Ferries was a bit of a coincidence.

    offer accommodation for accompanied loads like RO RO ferries would for truck drivers ?

    Not sure that Ringaskiddy is equipped to deal with a full ship of unaccompanied trailers. There is a few shunters for the ferry, but nothing like what Dublin or Rosslare, who are used to dealing with large volume of unaccompanied, would have.
    But I may be wrong. Its 2 years since I had cause to be there during unloading.

    Pont Aven not scheduled to recommence Cork Roscoff til 3rd July with Armorique midweek schedule starting on 7th July
    Interestingly BF Freight website has Armorique not recommencing til 15th September. Would imagine though that these will change again as things open up.

  • I see Ever Given is going to dock on Rotterdam in the next hour, that's its first port of call since being held in the Suez since March, those onboard deserve a few days shore leave on the pints.

  • Ringaskiddy handles CLdN vessels each week which carry unaccompanied trailers as well as containers - the port isn't the problem - its the road network that is going to cause more problems when operations from Tivoli move to Ringaskiddy.





  • There was no more than 6 between the deepwater and the ferryport last time I was there.





  • Heard last week that crew currently working on JLT interchange are all relocating to the new motorway to Ringaskiddy once the interchange is complete. As that is moving to a culmination from the heavy engineering point of view, you could see prep work start there next year.

    I hear the lads in Tivoli still have no date as to when operations are shifting downstream so it may be that Port of Cork will wait till after the motorway is complete for the full shift.

    Otherwise the N40 will be a large car& truck park.





  • I keep hearing (every year) from my sources (truckers and shipping lines in Cork) - "moving from Tivoli to Ringaskiddy in January". It possibly wont happen this coming January but can't see the move being delayed to when the M28 opens (2026??). I'm based in Dublin so does on the ground in Cork will be better informed no doubt....

  • The new terminal in Ringaskiddy is nowhere near complete yet. The STS cranes are being commissioned by Leibherr, but all the Straddle cranes and reachstackers from Tivoli need to be moved to cope with the handling of cargo from larger ships.

    Thats a barge job.

    It'll be done in phases.

    There is still no clarity as to where the people who have offices in Tivoli will relocate to (agents, port of Cork managers, Customs). The Plan was Buckeye, but Port of Cork seem to have it for sale now.

  • Seems Irish Ferries are having a bad time just at the moment, there are 2 ships in Belfast at the moment, WB Yeats looks like it's in dry dock, and Blue Star 1 is now moored along side the dry dock, the result is that there's no Irish Ferries sailings on Rosslare Pembroke route at the moment, and the Cherbourg route is being sailed by Epsilon, so only one ship on the Holyhead Dublin route.

    Travelled on both of them recently, not impressed with Blue Star 1, the trip over to Pembroke was smooth, as there was no weather at all, but the entire trip was noisy, with a lot of vibration, the impression being that one of the 4 engines was running at a different speed to the other 3, and that was causing anything even slightly loose to vibrate noticeably with a strange repetitive pattern. The ship is similar in size to the previous one, but the difference is very noticeable.

    Epsilon from Holyhead to Dublin a couple of weeks later was a completely unpleasant crossing, and I'm unlikely to ever book on that ship again, having become used to the Ulysses over a number of years, the difference between them is chalk and cheese, both in terms of how they sail, and the general passenger comfort levels, for me, Epsilon is just not suitable for the Irish Sea at this time of the year.

    So, anyone know why there are 2 ships in Belfast at the moment? This is not the normal time of year for scheduled maintenance, and the impression from the Irish Ferries site is that they've cancelled sailings, if they'd been doing scheduled inspections/maintenance, they would not have been taking bookings in the first place.

    Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁





  • Looking at Marine Traffic WB Yeats is in the graving dock in Belfast, no idea if scheduled or not, you would think this would be relative peak time with Christmas around the corner and a bad time for scheduled maintenance.





  • I don't think that either of them are there for scheduled maintenance, in that the web site is showing cancelled crossings "for technical reasons", Epsilon has been taken off the Holyhead route to cover the Yeats sailings from Dublin to Cherbourg, and I'd hate to be on that thing in any sort of gales, having done a crossing from Holyhead to Dublin recently on it, the thought of 24 hours on that thing doesn't bear thinking about.

    Blue Star 1 is also showing cancelled for technical reasons, and is moored in the main channel alongside the graving dock that W B Yeats is in, and having also been on it, I'm not altogether surprised, the vibration on it a few weeks ago was only woeful, I'd have to wonder if something has failed on one of the prop shafts bearings or similar, given how rough it was sounding when we went over to Pembroke, and the sea that night could not have been quieter, so it wasn't sea state related.

    I doubt that Irish Ferries are going to be saying much, so it's going to need someone on the inside to let it slip as to what is being done, it might happen, or they might just come back without any updates. It would be slightly worrying if Yeats has a major technical issue, given how new it is, but that's only a guess, and not based on firm information.

    Time will hopefully tell.

  • I believe Blue Star 1 is getting some damage repaired after she struck the quay in rosslare. But I only read this on Facebook so take that as you want.





  • That ties in with some comments that I've seen on another site since making my original post, but there's no confirmation of the details.

    Seems that the W B Yeats is a scheduled maintenance visit/refit, but it's over run time wise, which with Covid and supply train issues comes as no great surprise.

    Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁
