    Good on him.

The extremists won't give up their power without a fight. Ignoring them out of existence is the way forward.

All that needs to be said about Dr. McConkey is that in March 2020 he was basically the presenter of the Scare Byrne show, with herself as a guest, for weeks claiming that 120,000 people were going to die of Covid in Ireland.

As the pandemic comes to a close, 5000 people have died in Ireland of Covid. We might reach 6,000.

    McConkey's reputation is mud.

I see that DR Alco Mike Ryan is urging countries to be more cautious about re- opining to quickly. Trying to stay relevant I see, like a lot off them.

    From uncle TH on RTE:

"The Department of Health has reported 397 new cases of Covid-19.

There are 54 patients in hospital, with 16 being treated in intensive care, that is up two since yesterday.

In a statement, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: "We are seeing a small but concerning increase in hospitalisations in recent days, coming 10-14 days after the five-day moving average of daily case numbers began to increase.

"This is a cause for concern and we will be monitoring it closely in the days and weeks ahead." End quote.

Since we can expect a rise in hospitalisations with people being treated and released plus a small percentage staying for longer, how about setting up some Covid clinics outside of hospitals and/or in the community like we did in the first wave?
The large majority will need pretty standard care, no open wounds, surgery etc. And we can let the hospitals run for non Covid patients.
We could still send the heavy pulmonary cases to hospitals/ICUs if needed.
I mean, what is the big deal here? (Dont answer that..!)

I switched to "Desktop site" in Chrome options, makes for a less jarring experience.

    Change is hard.

So if its not safe for kids to go into restaurants, how can it be safe for kids to do indoor sports such as gymnastics, dance and swimming?

Also how come they are allowed into shopping centres and cinemas?

    So we're live again. Can someone please explain why we have any restrictions whatsoever in this context;

97% of all covid deaths came in the over 55s age group.

but we now have 78-93% of those over the age of 50 fully vaccinated (i.e. herd immunity in over 50s).

In the 44 days of June and July, notwithstanding we have had cases in the hundreds per day, we have had a total of 14 deaths (120 per year this works out as).

Therefore, the conclusion is that clearly the elderly and vulnerable to covid are now protected because of vaccines working and covid is clearly at a manageable level. To say otherwise, to me anyway, looks like you are questioning whether vaccines work which puts you in the anti-vaxx camp.

What am I missing? This hysteria needs to end today.

    But the variants!

But herd immunity! (despite vaccines not giving herd immunity since you can still catch and spread covid while vaccinated)

But you're just thirsty for a pint!

    etc..

i hope everyone posting complaints on this thread regularly utilised the break from boards to drink in the positivity that's out there right now...and the excellent weather. Hope you enjoyed a few pints outdoors and broke bread with friends, etc.

We still have restrictions because if the virus is allowed to rip unfettered through the unvaccinated cohort it will push the percentages of breakthrough infections experienced by vulnerable people in the vaccinated cohort.

Holohan hinted at yesterday's briefing that there will likely be a review of whether remaining restrictions are required as soon as September. This is the last few weeks everyone, mood should be hugely positive.

Probably because if the cases go into the thousands as they predict the deaths potentially will go to the hundreds and the hospitals will be under the same pressures as before (because they are mis managed and under resourced at the best of times) and people who need to access health care for non covid reasons will suffer.........its basically the same reasons for the lockdown since after the first wave...........

Have the agree/thanks for posts dissappeared for anyone else in this thread on the last half hour?

Thought I was banned from boards or something when I logged in last night and every thread said "last week". I hadn't been online in the week anyway.

Why was there not a single mention of the protest in town on any of the news sites last night? Got videos of thousands on the quays. Not a single mention.

    Yea, they're working on it apparently - there's a thread here: https://boards.ie/discussion/2058198814/welcome-to-the-new-boards-ie-platform-version-1-0#latest

Anyway, on to the other mess... that being our Covid response, which in the last few days has become even more confused and contradictory than before - the latest being Tony H saying not to bring your kids in for indoor dining, and Ministers saying parents should make up their own minds.

Then there's the vaccination cert - some will be emailed (I got mine alright), some posted, some "who knows?", and business owners not setup to validate them anyway beyond the old eyeball mk 1.

On top of that we have Micheal Martin apparently more focussed on delaying a leadership heave in the last few days than bringing any sort of clarity and indeed leadership by him and his Government to the whole mess.

What protest? “Thousands”?!! Was this in Cork? Didn’t notice anything in Dublin anyway.

Outside the convention centre in Dublin last night apparently

Fair enough, strange. Normally you want to have some visibility or impact. I live in town and there wasn’t a whisper of it. Poor use of “thousands” of protesters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭daydorunrun

The passing of the legislation on VP’s for indoor dining wasn’t even the top headline on the main evening news on RTE last. I see it as the most divisive piece of legislation in my lifetime and it seems most people don’t care.

There ya go, not a single mention on a single news site, but was number 3 on twitter last night's #dublinprotests or something

It doesn't suit the "narrative" the government are trying to project. Surely the media must see they are killing their business with this carry on. People are just going to turn away from these media outlets now.

It's just exhaustion with all of it. Additionally, many of us have adjusted to this strange existence. The availability of outdoor options provides a balance of sorts to the discriminatory nature of it. From the comments of some TDs it's really not something they would ever have considered doing but given the Hobson's choice at work it's really the least worst option.
