Yeah, it's usually a metaphor for drowning. But times change I suppose.

Beard isn't really a bean pole. He's tall but he's also over 120kg. He's extremely durable and physical in the tight.

He's about the same height as Ryan but the 8kg heavier. He also has better hands in the loose. Ryan should take this summer as a suggestion to work on those elements where he can improve. He's generally a better player than Beard but not at the aspects Gatland needs.

If they were touring Australia this summer, I believe Ryan would go just as someone like Parling went in 2013.

Looks like he's somehow taken Beard as Ryan Baird. Because they're Baird's measurements.

Adam BEARD is 6'8 and 120kg.

Apologies, but Adam is even more impressive than I thought. A man's man with a great beard. How could you not pick him?

The Dubs on here moaning about Murray for years must be scratching their heads . Conor Murray made lions captain and he wouldnt make the 'Leinster Lions' bench..

His passing, approach to the ruck, decision making is glacial. You know who you are :)

You're not really comparing like with like.

He's never been Munster club captain or Ireland captain for more than a cameo. And yet he's Lion captain for entirely sensible reasons.

And you're wrong, he would make the Leinster bench. Just.

I think the posters use of Dubs show where he keeps his chip.

As long as the Lions get two dubs against the Saffers, that's all that matters.

Ah to be fair, Leinster = dub schools + 1% of token culchies like TF, Henshaw, Cronin, SoB etc.

Spare a thought for Gareth Davies and Ali Price too, tour hadn't even started and just been told that they're both out of the running for the test team.

Judging by the stats... Gavin Coombes?

Hmmm. Probably only the off topic thread and maybe the super rugby thread don’t descend into Leinster - munster spats.

A picture told a thousand words with AWJs expression coming off the field there. Would make a grown man cry.

Wow, I didn't see that coming.

Incredible honour for Murray. I'm absolutely chuffed for him.

It says a lot about how highly he's regarded and the influence he has in camp. He's never even captained Munster, and now he's leading the Lions on tour.

He's on a list with some absolute Irish greats. Willie John, POC, BOD.

    He has captained Munster.

    He has captained Munster.

    Must have missed that

    When was it?

I'm just going purely off my memory, but I usually have a good memory for these things. Evidently not in this case.

But at the same time Warburton was the captain for the last tour and Peter O’Mahony started as captain ahead of him for the first test so Garland could do anything and is not afraid to make some tough calls. But it’s looking like Murray will start anyway barring injury or unless he puts in some really poor performances between now and the first test.

That wasn't the first test, it was against the Maori All Blacks iirc.

Justin Tipuric's tour is over too.

No, he's correct, it was the first test. Warburton benched and O'Mahony started as captain. Warburton might have been coming back from injury, I can't remember.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,028 ✭✭✭TRC10

He captained v the MABs and then was captain in the 1st test a week later.

Warburton was injured for a couple of the provincial games and the back row of POM/SOB/Faletau went really well vs the Crusaders and the MABs and Gatland didn't want to break that up.

So Murray definitely isn't pencilled in to start the 1st test

No O’Mahony definitely was starting captain for the first test in the last tour, he captained them against the Maori All Blacks as well but he did started the first test against New Zealand as captain, Warburton was on the bench for the first test against New Zealand.

Why on earth is someone comparing the size stats of James Ryan, Ryan Baird and Gavin Coombes in a Lions thread?

Congrats to Conor. I was surprised when I first heard the news, it definitely came out of left field, but he is probably nailed on as anyone can be in the team and is quite calm on the pitch as well which contrasts to someoneike Owen Farrell. Also, if he isn't the most experienced Lion in the squad now he would be pretty close.
