I would strongly disagree that it has had very little impact on kids. Extra curricular stuff is gone by the wayside. Segregation in the yards, teachers going around wearing masks all day. This impacts kids. It's very flippant to say it's very little. I can see in my kids the impact it has had.

Also why is it a sensible move anyway? How many kids have got seriously ill from this virus versus the flu or any other infectious disease that we don't change the entire way schools work.

Kids may not be vaccinated at all, so this is here forever for them in that case. Very "sensible"

Will all the school buses be at 50% in September until January at least?

It was when they removed the intercounty travel restriction. Did you miss that memo?

Yes, please show me the memo where they announced "lockdown is over now that intercounty travel is allowed"

It’s like cats fighting in a sack around here atm. Everyone so ****ing fatigued from restrictions and the outlook being as clear as mud from the Govt. on how we get out of them.

You would be wrong then. You can't just make up a definition for a word. That's not how it works.

It's hardly made up. As long as an entire industry is shuttered because of COVID, that industry is in lockdown. What other word would you use to describe it?

The second part of the bit within the quotation marks indicates the first bit. You can keep asking but nothing will change.

That industry is closed because of current restrictions. We, as a nation, are not living in lockdown. Which industries are currently shuttered?

Just tell us when government announced end of the lockdown please.

I don't believe they ever called it lockdown.

Lockdown is "only leave your home for essential reasons"

Crowds of people huddled together on the likes of Capel and Parliament St last week and the week before (I was one of them) and no jump in cases.

I know it's harder to catch Covid outdoors but there was absolutely no social distancing yet Nephet want to delay indoor dining and drinking even though all safety conditions will be met. It's absolutely disgusting. They really take us for idiots

There was indeed - against all public health advice and without any "safety conditions" at all.
You'd nearly think some people didn't give a fiddlers.

But perhaps I'm wrong - maybe this was some type of spontaneous, selfless and altruistic experiment to test whether there would be a "jump in cases"?

    Very good of you btw.

Caveat. yes we know that outdoor transmission is less of a risk but we also know that crowded situations where social distancing is not possible or not observed increases that risk.

Thing about a "jump in cases" is that it depends on a number of things - no least that those who get sick, get sick enough to have symptoms and those that have symptoms go get tested.

And we know In younger age groups are less likley to get seriously sick. Now that doesn't all younger people won't get sick. Some may but in smaller numbers - but that doesn't stop individuals passing said disease on to others (including other younger people) who may not be so lucky or perhaps are not fully vaccinated.

As to a "jump in cases". Over the last four months we've had a near constant background noise of relatively high case numbers - despite all other metrics falling.

We know vaccination is driving down those numbers - but increased socialisation and frankly a small number of eejits who dont give a damn means that we are still on the watch list of a number of countries including the US who detail that there is "a high level of COVID-19" circulating here.

We already have outdoor drinking and eating - so its not like we're all being deprived. And yes both indoor drinking and eating with all safety measures has been scheduled to restart in July.

But to your final point - yes there are "idiots" out there for sure.

Read the story, all they've done is relay what Danish officials have said.

Technically speaking lockdown is a restriction policy for depriving people of free movement and interaction with others.

”Where’s the revolution? Come on, people you’re letting me down!”

You should add in, thereby slowing down the transmission of an infectious disease. They didn't lock us down for giggles

The reason why they did it is irrelevant to the definition itself.
It will be different for a prison and for a pandemic, yet the same definition and underlying principles apply.

What increased socialistion? Those crowds are no bigger now than they were months ago. Before that there were house parties. I'd imagine a fair few in the party scene have immunity by now.

Outdoor transmissions appears to be practically nil. 'Social distancing' is only theoretical and unenforceable, its wholly voluntary.

Not just Denmark apparently. Its international news atm ...

Who would have ever thunk it eh?

Interesting to note WHO’s advice doesn’t include reducing spectators or cancelling matches.

‘In areas where infection rates are increasing, WHO Europe called on the cities concerned to act quickly.

"Learning from experience, we must act fast on signals showing increasing cases," Mr Butler said.

"Expanding testing and sequencing; stepping up contact tracing; and building very high vaccine uptake fast among those vulnerable and most at risk."’

29 cases from 3 matches is nothing.

A tame house party would give you the same.

140000 people confirmed for the British grand prix next month. And we here have lads here telling us we need to keep schoolkids in pods until at least January.

It was spontaneously borrowed from prison slang to describe a new state of affairs, its not some piece of medical jargon so odd to see people getting so precious over the term.

As some Indian politician said, "Lockdowns are entirely the creation of Xi Jingping."

Why are they even relaying it? Do we get full stories on 2 or 3 cases from other countries or events in other parts of the world that make the front page of the RTE website? It's very much hype. 3 fooking cases in another EU state is now worthy of front page news! Get up the yard. Meanwhile the BBC website is reporting 140,000 crowd will be at the British GP.

Pods are there only in name at this stage, their actual implementation is all but gone.

You have evidence to support this? Pods still in place in all the schools in our locality as per DoE guidance. Thankfully the kids get a break from it this week.

    FFS, because it's news.

Why are you even reading it if it gets you aggravated?

They have stories for all sorts of stuff I've no interest in. I, and presumably most normal people, don't read them. You'd have to be a bit soft to complain about stories you've no interest in, or don't want to know about.

I'd more define lockdown to be a state of isolation or restricted access instituted as a security measure rather than a restriction policy

As for as fot the part in your description about depriving people of free movement and interaction with others you've effectively defined country borders, prisons, airport secure zones and pub smoking areas amongst many other things so it's a bit of a wide ranging description

Also your definition is designed to stoke fear in people, no better than some of the news companies out there

Yeah, familiarity with schools. Do your kids stay apart from those not in their immediate pod at break time, yard time, start and end time, P.E., sports day? I very much doubt it.
