"Quasi autocratic regimes with leaders intent on creating some sort of leader cult" didn't know nphet were in other countries ?

Of course they lose money short-term but long term it is incalculable in advertising for your country.
do you not think having a "wild Atlantic way" or "ancient east" advertisement to an enormous worldwide audience is beneficial ?

2 billion watched the last euros ffs

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/soccer/2016/12/15/euro-2016-seen-by-2bn-people-on-tv-600mn-tune-in-for-final/95462450/

It was another stupid decision by the gov, nphet but to be expected

I have yet to meet anyone who decided where to go on holiday because of where a football match was played. There may be some point if it was all in one country, but from round to round in the euros the location of the matches will be purely incidental to the overwhelming majority of viewers, who, surprise surprise, tune in for the football.

No doubt you will regale us with the glories of Baku after they host their matches

On a side note, I find it staggering that some pro-restrictions posters feel the need to reply to every single post. It's like they are trying to fight a tidal wave or something, knowing deep down, the game is nearly up, and they are slowly becoming the minority in this country. It must be exhausting. Go out and enjoy the good weather.

I just put them all on ignore. It's better for you sanity, believe me, I used to get into ridiculously pedantic and circular arguments with them.
I'm sure they reply to my posts but thankfully I don't see those replies.

Major international events are bid for for the prestige and short term economic gain but by and large lose money. Not prioritising a football tournament that your team is not involved in is not in any way strange. In fact the only places hosting matches who don’t have a team involved are quasi autocratic regimes with leaders intent on creating some sort of leader cult

So Romania is a quasi autocratic regime now?? The Prime Minister there is in power since December 2020 but fair play to him, I guess, for turning Romania into an autocracy in just 6 months.

So advertising doesn't work and the euros, world cup, all major sporting events are a waste of time. Thank **** you aren't running the country .

You would believe anything to justify your nphet obsession.

Maybe you should ask London and Every other city hosting why they make promotional adds

I see they want to delay lifting of lockdown for another month in England because of "de VARIANTS!!!".
Cases rising .... hmm I wonder will they use hospitalizations and or deaths as a metric - nah? just keep bleating on about cases... and after that month what ? another delay .... and another - then of course it's winter and the now yearly standard lockdown will happen, and of course Ireland will follow the UK cos that's what they always do.

    Shambles.

If you think that's scaremongering, I can only assume you didn't read past the headline.

    The conclusion of the article:
In rich countries with good vaccination campaigns it is hoped the next variants won't be able to pose a major problem due to widespread immunity. But these progressively more transmissible variants are a nightmare for the rest of the world where they are making it harder and harder to stay on top of Covid.

All fully vaccinated with daily rapid antigen testing in place. Restrictions can be lifted with a robust vaccination and testing regime in place.

Really can't wait to get vaccinated and hopefully soon can go back to close to normal society.

I'm 43 so I have a bit to wait yet, but it's positive to see opening up and numbers of infections not increasing drastically.

As the restrictions ease more hopefully numbers won't rise as vaccinations continues

    Slane 2022 anyone?

    Got vaccinated on Tuesday. Moderna
No side effect. I don't have a Facebook account but listening to the ****e my wife reads on it, I was half expecting my willy to fall off, or grow a second one.

I'd have settled for the latter.

Absolutely no doubt about that. I've even spoken to people who have told me they loved the lockdown's in both March 2020 and the recent one.

Pretending these people don't exist is childish.

England pushing back reopening doesn't bond well for us esp with the way we're copying them

Personally fuming watching the euros, we could easily still have those games but the government didn't put up a fight and blame UEFA for it. Basically translates to 'NPHET saying its unsafe and they recommend we don't host the games'

Trail events really a PR excerise 'look lads were having events like other places, ye happy now' etc

Copying them.?? They were due to open nightclubs & eliminate social distancing , we aren't anywhere near that. Not sure how you can say we're copying them either because we clearly aren't

Fortunately we're not following their playbook verbatim.

So far the main variant of concern in the UK hasn't had much of an impact here.

If we can keep the Delta variant at bay while the vaccination program progresses we should hopefully avoid a similar situation here.

Still have that lingering thought of going into Autumn/Winter and another lockdown vaccination target hit or not

Not seeing why a lockdown would be necessary if the bulk of the population have been vaccinated.

Possibly for non covid reasons so the hospitals won't be over run while the backlog of other illnesses is sorted

So a lockdown to clear a backlog caused by a lockdown which will be made bigger by a lockdown.......

    Makes complete sense.

Well it does when you spend too much time in conspiracy echo chambers and have convinced yourself that this is all a dastardly plot to ruin everyone's lives.

Our default setting is to compare ourselves to the UK but it's not a good comparison when it comes to Covid-19. They're going a very different route to us, which includes far more Astra Zeneca and bigger gaps between the two doses. It is starting to look like the AZ isn't as effective against the Delta variant. A strain, incidentally, that isn't running riot here yet. Hopefully it won't. And of course, because they've really stretched out the gap between the 1st and 2nd doses, people aren't fully vaccinated as quickly as they are here. I have yet to see any indications that we're going to be rolled back into another lockdown. I don't see why it should happen if we can continue to steadily vaccinate people. What some people seem to forget is that unlike last year and the beginning of this year, there are now vaccines out there. The figures from abroad strongly suggest that vaccines work and are making a difference. Of course, that's less sexy than going bananas over what the evil overlords in NPHET are getting up to.

Just rode by a bar in Dublin about an hour ago and amazing to see people outside eating and drinking enjoying themselves, mostly younger folk who've been hit hardest by the restrictions the last 16 months.

Hasn't bothered me that much as I'm older and grumpier than most and happy enough in my own skin but that age group need this badly for their own mental health.

    Onward and upward.

I think you have a point there tbf. Facebook and twitter specifically seem to be feeding the nutjob conspiracies on vaccines and variants, Nphet and the ever evil Tony responsible for everything from making small children cry to wanting to make sure everyone never leave the island again.

I honestly thought that most of conspiracy stuff came US conspiracy sites. Sadly a lot seems home grown at this stage. :(

Just turned it on. Denmark aren’t even that far ahead of Ireland on the vaccination front and have what looks to be a nearly full stadium for this match. Interesting. It’s almost as if there are other ways of managing the risk Covid poses going forward, like mass antigen testing.
