Is a farcical tournament about to get even more farcical?

Well that's ****e. Even if the game does go ahead now its hard to see Ospreys getting a win with all this disruption, especially considering they have nothing to play for.

Not a big fan of the competition but not sure it's any more farcical than when Champions Cup games had to be called off. When there were no extra weekends for replaying game it was always on the cards that covid cases could decide winner. Think Benetton would have preferred to qualify by winning naturally but not sure other teams would have a huge amount to complain about tbh.

Agreed. People seem to be bagging it, but theres been some really enjoyable games so far

Give zebre 5 points and have Treviso play Munster for the final round instead. Sorted

On the one hand it's cool to see an Italian team in a final but on the other the southern hemisphere talking heads will go off when they most likely get butchered.

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,238 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

    Well that sucks
Benetton get through to a final by beating 3 teams
Every game this weekend is now a total dead rubber

    Joke of a competition

  • Registered Users Posts: 370 ✭✭bluedex

Yes but Munster effectively got two walkovers against Ulster and Leinster and were going to play to play Zebre too.. so it's just a lot of moaning.

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

    Mockery.

Should just get rid of Van Graan at this stage. Steamrolled in the Pro 12 final and couldn't even make the final of a tournament Leinster didn't prioritise.

A fitting end to this part of the 'Competition'

Best of luck to Benetton in the final .

No offense to Benetton, but it's a bit of a joke that a team that won zero games in the "regular season" are now in the final of this tournament. It sums up the farce that it is. Especially when you consider that Ulster won 14 out of 16 games in the regular season and didn't even get a knockout match.

But they won 4 out of 4 played in this competition.

Munster and Benneton both played connacht and Zebre, munster lost to connacht and Benneton didn't. That's why benneton are in the final.

Yeah, I get that. I understand how this competition worked, and also why I didn't mention that Benetton played Zebre twice or a match got COVID'ed in their favour. Them's the breaks in this tournament.

But the reality is the primary league that is supposed to measure the teams against each other was cut short to accommodate this tournament (and the South African teams). And the way it's worked out, has just ended up rewarding short term form in May at the expense of the performance over the rest of the season. I just think that's a bit crazy.

Football Rugby is a simple game. Twenty-twoThirty men chase a ball for 90 80 minutes and at the end, the Germans Leinster always win.

Would that much have changed if the season had played out in full?

    🤪

Anything is possible in knockout rugby...who would have seen Ulster beating Munster in Thomond in 2012?

...Or Racing losing to Bordeaux this year?

...Or Scarlets beating both Munster and Leinster in Dublin in 2017?

Farce of a competition but fair play to Bennetton. Sadly can't see them winning it though even with home advantage

Munster have themselves to blame, we should of beaten Connacht

No they shouldn't have. They were outplayed in every facet that day. Theres a bit of narrative that 'it was theirs to lose' but in reality they played one good game again Leinster at the start, and were fairly meh there after. Similarly Leinster weren't up to much for the bulk of their games after a hammering at the start. Treviso have been the most consistant and frankly, entertaining to watch. I hope they go all the way.

Worth saying again: This farce of a competition is paying the provinces EUR 500,000 each from the coffers of the South Africans. That money pays for quite a few contract extensions that would have caused much more consternation had they not been completed.

It also gave an opportunity for teams like Benetton and Glasgow to reset after it was clear their Pro14 season was over after 5-6 games.

The regular season was over. This was everyone starting from scratch.

Strange, I wouldn't have thought SA rugby wasn't flush with cash

Think speculation was that it might be for access to Champions Cup but not sure where that's at with Rainbow Cup format.

It's a country of 60m people. That's means a very large TV audience and a much larger payments for sports rights. That's where the money's coming from.

Not entirely true. Munster were excellent against a decent Ulster team, iirc. That’s a large part of why the mistakes against Connacht were so disappointing, off the back of it.
