I see Tony is on the way to Limerick with SD this morning to meet with pal TD’s regarding Limerick case numbers. Putting my personal opinions on him aside for a moment, I take huge issue with an unelected advisor being involved in government meetings such as this where is is likely he will have an input greater than his position should dictate.

By all means advise, but being involved in government discussions such as this is a step too far for me!

It smacks of a publicity stunt.

Is it the alpha or delta variant that's down in Limerick anyway?

‘Explosive multiplier effect’ leaves Limerick Covid situation at ‘very volatile’ level - HSE chief

Jesus lads if its the delta variant and it mixes with the explosive multiplier effect and then does a double mutation we could all be wiped out in days.

I’ve an issue with an advisor being involved in government meetings! That’s not advising, that’s discussing policy, which isn’t in his remit.

    What government meeting?

He is briefing local officials on the epidemiology situation in Limerick and meeting with public health officials.

The Chief Medical Officer and chair of the emergency task force setup to deal with the pandemic.

Who should be down there? Should we have sent the head of Fisheries Board?

We are dealing with the explosive multipler effect though so his intervention might just stop it mixing with the delta variant.

Although the beta variant has rumoured to have landed in Shannon.

His worry index is at an all time low too.

As I said in another post yesterday, if the people who are involved in the spread in Limerick at present haven't been adhering to rules or guidelines to date. What use is the 2 lads heading down going to achieve.
As has been said, theatrics and media ops is all this is about.

You have to understand that hospital nrs have been taken off the Variable Of Concern list.
It is all about the Rise of the Variants in terms of percentage growth, and the headlines '50% growth in x variant detected'! All unrelated to actual rise in hospitalizations.
As i have said before, the link infections>hospitalizations>deaths has been broken for a while now, yet people persist on using or assuming it..
If we had only concentrated on actual treatments like Ivermectin and others we wouldnt have been in this state of affairs..

    From BBC northern Ireland:
"Holidaymakers travelling to Portugal will have to self-isolate for 10 days on their return to Northern Ireland, ministers have agreed.

The executive has decided to remove the country from its so-called green list of destinations after the UK goverment also opted to do so.

It has now been placed on the amber list.

The key difference is the self-isolation requirement. The move comes into force after 04:00 BST on Tuesday.

The Northern Ireland Executive announced its green list of 12 countries, including Portugal, just two weeks ago.

Travel to countries on the green list means you do not have to isolate on return.

If travelling to Northern Ireland from an amber country, either directly or via another country, you must provide proof of a negative Covid test result taken up to three days before departure, book post arrival testing and also self-isolate for 10 days.".

So much for the fully vaccinated being deemed safe to travel and not having to test and isolate. There were/are a lot of UK fully vaccinated visitors on a break or booked one in June, looking forward to safe passage. And european travellers as well.
You can clearly see the fear of variants leading to sudden restrictions for the summer months no matter your vaccination status.
So it seems the 'you need to be fully vaccinated to enjoy the benefits' only goes so far.

The only thing i am not entirely sure of, reading the statement, is if it means both testing AND self isolation for everyone.
Some media outlets talk of hotel quarantine, some don't even mention tests.
I take it each country will make up the rules as they see fit despite the EU wide Covid Cert. You can be certain of that uncertainty..

Bloodly NPHET trying to control our lives, only country with these type of controls, laughing stock of europe, blah blah blah

Yes, isnt it ridiculous, the Cheif Medical officer being involved in meetings related to a highly transmissible virus in the third largest urban area in the state. The cheek of him

How do you know its even in the city?

What difference would it make if it was in Bruff, Caherconlish or Askeaton. What is bizarre is the insistence that the chief medical officer should not be involved in discussion related to the area with current largest incidence rate of the virus, a multiple of anywhere else in the country, irrespective of where it is.

Maybe if we ignore the virus altogether we can pretend everything is awesome

That's the one the antivaxers are touting as an alternative to vaccines.

Anyway statement from the company who actually makes the drug.

Merck Statement on Ivermectin use During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Company scientists continue to carefully examine the findings of all available and emerging studies of ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19 for evidence of efficacy and safety. It is important to note that, to-date, our analysis has identified:

    No scientific basis for a potential therapeutic effect against COVID-19 from pre-clinical studies;

    No meaningful evidence for clinical activity or clinical efficacy in patients with COVID-19 disease, and;

A concerning lack of safety data in the majority of studies.

We do not believe that the data available support the safety and efficacy of ivermectin beyond the doses and populations indicated in the regulatory agency-approved prescribing information.

Obviously the reality doesn't concern antivaxers.

I'd say if we ignored it hospitalisation could go from 82 to 124.

We are in big trouble for sure, the explosive multiplier effect, the delta variant and the reopening of hospitality, a nuclear storm.

We could be looking at 54 in ICU in 2 weeks.

To be fair no country would laugh at the only country dealing with the explosive multiplier effect.

I am signing off this thread and possibly this forum.
I am not cut out for it.
Too many people who see issues as a binary thing. Use any metaphor you like: on/off switch, blue/red pill, black/white team.
Maybe the real virus running through the world is a digital one, just 0 and 1.
Pick your team, kill the enemy, find their weak spot and attack.
No hesitancy at all. No qualms. Just let rip.
I have reached the ceiling of my tolerance and the interaction in this and other threads is mainly negative.
    Byebye..

What is he going to add to this meeting?
He said his piece - numbers are of concern to him.

The Minister is going down to meet with the locals to find out if they know what isgoing on and if there is any action that should be taken (additional litter bins and Portaloos ??) to make him look a little bit effective.

Nothing for CMO to do, is there?

First it was protecting people from a pandemic. Now it’s protecting a pandemic from people.
