Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ryder Cup 2020 [Official Thread!]

Getting ever closer to the Ryder Cup taking place in Whistling Straits in September after it being postponed last year due to Covid. I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread tracking the progress of those in the running to make the teams for Europe and the USA ahead of the competition.

Europe first of all -

To qualify, Europe take the top 4 from the European Points List and the top 5 players from the World Points list who are not already qualified from the European List. Captain Padraig has 3 wildcard picks to make after that.

A direct copy of my post from the Shane Lowry Thread...

European Points List (top 4 from this automatically qualify)
Rank|Player|Points
1|Jon RAHM|5,185.82
2|Tommy FLEETWOOD|4,911.26
3|Tyrrell HATTON|4,860.56
4|Rory MCILROY|3,975.19
5|Victor PEREZ|3,676.75
6|Matthew FITZPATRICK|2,940.90
7|Bernd WIESBERGER|2,742.13
8|Paul CASEY|2,679.16
9|Robert MACINTYRE|2,665.57
10|Danny WILLETT|2,318.39
11|Matthias SCHWAB|2,262.97
12|Lee WESTWOOD|2,220.65
13|Justin ROSE|2,120.95
14|Shane LOWRY|1,864.31

World Points List (top 5 from this automatically qualify outside of those 4 qualified from above)
Rank|Player|Points
1|Jon RAHM|378.78
2|Rory MCILROY|344.97
3|Tyrrell HATTON|269.02
4|Viktor HOVLAND|241.40
5|Paul CASEY|227.31
6|Lee WESTWOOD|226.98
7|Tommy FLEETWOOD|203.60
8|Matthew FITZPATRICK|200.36
9|Victor PEREZ|187.37
10|Shane LOWRY|154.09
11|Justin ROSE|132.38
12|Robert MACINTYRE|128.94
13|Danny WILLETT|123.46
14|Sergio GARCIA|115.58
15|Bernd WIESBERGER|101.62
16|Matt WALLACE|101.49

Blue are those who are qualifying as it stands from the European Points List. Green are those who are qualifying as it stands from the World Points List.

Bernd Wiesberger the highest points scorer on the European Points list not already qualified, so if Padraig is going to take at least one more player from that list, then he is in pole position.

Shane Lowry the highest points scorer on the World Points list not already qualified, so if Padraig is going to take at least one more player from the world points list, then he is in pole position.

After that for the final pick, who the feck knows lol but Justin Rose or Sergio Garcia I would think the most likely given their previous Ryder Cup records and I think he will favour someone with experience to make up the final spot over a rookie such as MacIntyre, especially playing in the US.
He recently spoke about Garcia's pedigree in the Ryder Cup and of his record and said if Sergio was in need of a pick, he felt he would have to pick him based on his experience.

USA next

To qualify, the USA take the top 6 players from their Ryder Cup rankings and Captain Steve Stricker will have 6 wildcard picks to make from the rest.

How the top 20 of this list is looking right now...

American Ryder Cup Points List(top 6 from this automatically qualify)
Rank|Player|Points
1|Dustin Johnson|16,119.15
2|Bryson DeChambeau|14,753.06
3|Justin Thomas|13,958.61
4|Brooks Koepka|12,989.09
5|Collin Morikawa|11,874.77
6|Xander Schauffele|11,291.19
7|Patrick Reed|9,791.99
8|Tony Finau|9,517.26
9|Daniel Berger|8,920.26
10|Webb Simpson|8,745.29
11|Jordan Spieth|8,040.25
12|Billy Horschel|7,730.22
13|Patrick Cantlay|7,298.73
14|Harris English|6,737.28
15|Scottie Scheffler|6,733.24
16|Phil Mickelson|6,575.57
17|Sam Burns|6,065.23
18|Will Zalatoris|5,911.85
19|Max Homa|5,763.78
20|Jason Kokrak|5,556.45

The top 6 are well out in front at the moment but the remaining 6 picks could come from anywhere. Patrick Reed is surely a shoe in with his previous record. Tony Finau and Jordan Spieth will also no doubt get a pick. After that he could look at Billy Horschel and Scottie Scheffler who contended the final of the World Matchplay.

And who after that. Would Daniel berger in 9th miss out ? Or should he bring Phil with all his experience or maybe even Will Zalatoris. If anything having 6 picks could prove even trickier than just having 3

It will be interesting to see how this plays out throughout the summer, particularly with 2 more majors to go which could affect the points heavily one way or the other

This thread my now be the best place to post this.

The distain he has for Bryson is glorious. Should make for a great atmosphere in the American team room!! Throw in Reed, mickelson, Speith and maybe even Billy Ho and they building could explode.

Wiesberger after making serious inroads on the european points list. He has moved up to 6th courtesy of his 920 points earned today and is only 14 points behind Victor Perez.

The 24 world ranking points he has earned are doubled for the qualifying and move him from 15th up to 11th, where he will only be 5 points behind Lowry.

McIntyre moved bugger all.

Be interesting to see if Garcia and Poulter can do anything to boost their rankings after today, though it looks like Sergio has **** the bed early doors

Poulter made some serious "Ryder Cup" putts on his final few holes. T3 will do him no harm.

I was wrong, he played more than twice. Played four times. I should have checked his wiki lol :D

Ryder Cup (representing Europe): 2004 (winners), 2006 (winners), 2008, 2018 (winners)

And should have been picked in 2010 when he was world ranked number 9 at the time but Monty favoured others

Didn't he also forego his European tour membership in favour of the PGA knowing he'd be ineligible for the Ryder cup meaning he missed a couple he might of otherwise qualified for? i think they relaxed the rules a bit since then for ET membership when it was clear Rory wouldn't be able to comply?

Yeah, so John Rahm is never going to be caught on the European Points List and probably the World Points list. Rest of the top 9 is still as you were. Shane missed out on a good opportunity to get up into the top 9, Migliozzi made some big inroads on both lists to put himself in the frame for automatic promotion.

The US team is tough to predict when they've got the 6 picks

I suspect Cantlay and Spieth are locks

Reed probably should be but will they want his toxicity in the locker room?

Finau seems to be in poor form

Will they take a chance on Mickelson?

Lots of interesting possibilities

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,421 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Gotta be a concern for Harrington that even with double points on offer, a lot of his hopeful big names arent making a play to reach out and grab automatic promotion. Even a pick. Rose, Garcia, Poulter for example are all well outside the mark, although Poulter is playing alright. Perez has played 4 tournaments in the last 12 weeks and missed the cut in all of them, yet he still hangs onto the final qualifying spot. It's almost like nobody wants it

He will pick Reed for his previous ryder cup pedigree
Spieth and Cantlay are locks as you said.
Scheffler and Horschel played the final of the world matchplay and would have to be considered. Especially Horschel who said it was a lifes ambition to play Ryder Cup. He wants it bad.
Mickleson might have to give something extra between now and the finish to get a pick

Ya I can't see Reed not being on the team myself unless his form falls of a cliff completely

Phil may need another high finish or two alright I think

For some reason I can see him picking Scheffler over Horschel with "planning for the future" being the reason given. Can't see both making the team.

Another interesting one is Zalatoris. He's still not actually a PGA tour member as far as I know. If that's the case I don't know if he can actually play which is mental.

Perez will surely fall out of the automatic places with the way he's going, and there's zero chance of him getting a pick I'd imagine.

As you say the form of many of the top Europeans is a worry. Fleetwood is another that hasn't shown much recently.

Hatton pulled out as well, I think Casey is next in line.

So leaving it open for Garcia, Rose, Westwood, Stenson, Poulter to play..

I see Harro has paired himself with Wiesberger (and Louis) this week in Munich.

He has sent Kaymer out to watch Garcia and Hovland

Hovland secures his place this afternoon when winning the BMW International

Wiesberger had a chance to secure his but he didnt take advantage of it. He'll only gain about 160 european points which will still leave him 600 behind McIlroy and he'll gain about 5 world points which is worth SFA to him

To be honest I'm not sure about Wiesberger as a potential Ryder Cup player. He's got a good few Euro tour wins but his record in the US is fairly poor and I fear he'd be another Andy Sullivan/Chris Wood. If it came to it I'd be picking Westwood, Poulter or even Garcia over him.

The form of victor perez is a worry . If he qualifies he will only play the singles !

Which is why I'm rooting for literally anybody else to overtake him and get the qualifying spot even Wiesberger. There is no chance Perez gets a pick if he doesnt make it, but thankfully there is still a full summer of golf for someone to come along and take that spot off him or for him to even find his form once again

Struggling to get a strong team, none of the above 3 as experienced as they are showing great form.

Ya I think the last 3 or 4 spots on the team will be significantly weaker than the US equivalent. Could make all the difference

Yep and he won his match with it. It was in foursomes or fourball

I played the course the other week and was just thinking of that moment back in 2006 as I walked up onto the tee because I was standing beside him when he holed out. I don't think that actually won the match if I remember correctly, but it meant that the opposition had to hold their tee shot to keep it alive. They didn't and the point was won for Europe. I think he was partnered with David Howell that day but can't remember if it was the four ball or foresomes

Victor Perez has missed the cut at the open by 1 shot. Genuine opportunity for someone to finally overtake him on the world points list. Matthew Fitz close to overtaking Rory on the European Points list, but it would make no difference on the team selection as Rory is home and hosed from the World Points List.

People behind Victor who have made the cut in Bold Italic because colours dont seem to be an option anymore

World Points List
Name|Points|Position

9|Victor PEREZ|187.37

10|Shane LOWRY|184.60

11|Guido MIGLIOZZI|169.57

12|Bernd WIESBERGER|162.96

13|Ian POULTER|146.12

14|Robert MACINTYRE|143.79

15|Justin ROSE|142.59

16|Thomas DETRY|141.16

17|Sergio GARCIA|137.58

18|Danny WILLETT|129.92

19|Richard BLAND|107.65

20|Matt WALLACE|106.61

21|Rafa CABRERA BELLO|101.27
No need for a European Points list as the top 5 are currently on the team and well clear of all behind them

And of course tables dont work

Lowry is the best of the bolded players above so hopefully he can finally overtake Victor and put some distance on it

Perez needs a miracle to get on the plane. Hasn’t a hope of a pick at this stage.

i doubt he’ll remain in auto spot

One of the lads on the golf course told me today that Lowry had already overtaken Perez by virtue of making the cut. Hopefully he does a bit better than that tomorrow

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,476 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

A solid round by Lowry tomorrow should see him on the plane, be worthy of a pick at a minimum. Not many European players in top 10, so fair play to Lowry

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,421 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Matthew Fitz has overtaken Rory on the European Points list. Makes no difference in the grand scheme of things as Rory just takes his spot from the World Points list anyway

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭abff

I had it in my head that Westwood was a shoe in for an automatic qualifying spot, but I think he’s going to need to pick up quite a few more World ranking points if he wants to stay in the top 9. As things currently stand, he could easily be passed by Shane in the World points list and he would then move out of the top 9 if Wiesberger (or one the the other players below him) moves ahead of Fitzpatrick in the European points list.

Will he get a pick if he doesn’t qualify automatically?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,421 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

I'd say he will. Harro is going to pick experience for his 3 picks. Sergio and Poulter are already shoe ins to be picked so if Westy didnt make it, for someone like Wiesberger or Perez, he would definitely get the experience pick

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭abff

I agree. Do you think Shane will get a pick if he finishes one spot outside the qualifying places?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,776 ✭✭✭abff

The current automatic qualifiers are Rahm, Fleetwood, Hatton, Fitzpatrick, McIlroy, Hovland, Casey, Westwood and Lowry. I reckon Padraig won’t be too unhappy if that remains unchanged by the cut off date.

If it does remain unchanged, who do you fancy for the wild card picks? Poulter, Garcia and Rose are currently 5th, 6th and 7th of those next in line and would seem to me to be the obvious choices unless they show absolutely no form over the coming weeks.

Another option would be Molinari, but he’s way down in the current rankings and would need a huge run of form to even come under consideration. But the success of his partnership last time around with Fleetwood would have to be taken into account if he shows some decent form.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,421 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

I think he will. He has shown enough form in the last few weeks to get him over the line of a pick if needed. He has basically done what harrington asked him to do in just showing form.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,823 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

Not a bad team at all on paper.

Regarding the picks I think Poulter is a lock and Garcia probably is too.

The third would be either Rose or McIntyre I assume. I don't think Wiesberger will get a pick. Molinari hasn't a hope unless he catches fire over the next month. Ditto Perez.

Can't think of anyone else that'd be considered.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Can't see him giving a pick to McIntyre. Generally Ryder Cup debuts need to be earned by qualifying and the captains picks are held over for those with previous experience.
