Working fine for me in Cork

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭chops018

Have my GoMo SIM nearly a week. All seems working fine and I'm getting log in text codes for work and my bank so that's all good. Service seems the exact same as Eir so again happy with that (sure don't Eir own them anyway?). Should have moved ages ago for the price. Thanks all for the helpful comments, I followed what yee said about letting the service fo down on my sim and turning the phone off for a while before putting in the GoMo SIM.

A friend of mine got a 7-day warning text from Gomo because his DD from ulster bank failed.
The text and links seem genuine. He has thousands in his account.

Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this ?

Contact the bank directly. Do NOT follow any link.

    I deleted my original post
The text was genuine - but thanks for the warning!

He needs to update his card expiry date.
I'll talk him through it on the phone.

Sorry if it's been asked before, is there an easy way to remove/disable pin from my gomo sim card, I'm going to try one in a router, experimenting etc.

Was hoping I don't have to request this but will if have to

    Thanks

The coverage was down here this morning. It is crazy that they have no phone number to report a fault.

    Happy enough went them otherwise.

    Coverage came back at lunchtime

I can’t log into my account to pay my bill. Anyone else having this issue?

Just wondering why you manually pay your bill? I thought the whole Idea of providing your card details is for GoMo to automatically take the money from your account.

I always just pay it as soon as I get the notification. Dunno why… always have done it this way.

I know when I signed up I didn't have that option, I had to allow them to charge my card automatically every month.

That's correct, but if you now go in to your account and your bill is there you can pay it.

I was looking at the GoMo website to get information on WiFi calling. It says that it's currently available only to those who are paying €14.99 a month but that it will be rolled out to other users in the near future. Does anyone know when, by chance? Also, how would you go about making a call with WiFi calling? Can it be use to make international calls? Thanks.

I asked Gomo this a couple of weeks ago but couldn't get any dates from them.

I also suspect it may only work with the Eir/Meteor handsets that support Wifi calling.

If everything is set up correctly just enabling WiFi calling on your phone's settings should let you use a normal WiFi connection to make/receive calls and send SMS.

I don't know the story is with making International Calls.

Thanks for that. I was trying to figure out if I could use my data to make calls like I would with Skype (only using the phone app) or not, if it worked it'd hopefully take care of international charges. I guess time will tell. :)

Eir allow international use over Wifi for calls and SMS. It works extremally well even with Airplane mode on.
Vodafone don't allow use outside of Ireland.

Calls on WiFi calling are still taken from your allowance or charged at the standard rate, it won’t give you the option to make free/cheap international calls unless you can already do that on the mobile network.

See, this is where I get lost - if I have enough data, wouldn't the calls be taken out of that? Would you get charged for the international calls as you would if you were dialling an international number normally?

There are two types of calling - one via your mobile operator (regular phone calls) and the other is an "over the top" service like WhatsApp or Facetime.

"Over the top" means it avoids your mobile plan completely (apart from maybe the mobile data that you're using) and it doesn't matter where anybody lives, any calls made are free.

However, making regular phone calls via your mobile operator will cost you according to your mobile plan.

WiFi calling just lets you make regular phone calls in situations where there is no mobile signal but you do have access to WiFi.

So, if you have WiFi and you can use an app like WhatsApp/Signal/Facetime then that's the cheapest way to go.

long_b explains it well. To give another analogy…

Think of WiFi calling as another way of connecting to your mobile network and not a different treatment of the calls you make. Ultimately everything we do on our mobiles is ‘data’ (1’s and 0’s), just because it mentions WiFi doesn’t mean the network will consider it like browsing instead of a call.

WiFi calling is great where you would otherwise have poor mobile coverage (I get poor 3G and previously had to stand by the front window to make a call) otherwise it doesn’t add much other than piece of mind.

When used abroad, it allows you to avoid roaming charges so there is a saving there.

Thank you all, now I understand. Unfortunately the people I'd be calling don't have Skype and I don't have WhatsApp, so it'll have to be "normal" phone calls. Pity.

Very good to know, too, but why is that, if it's only another way of connecting to the network?

You're using the internet to connect your phone to the Eir/Gomo network and not a foreign network operator that needs to be paid for their service.
From Eir/Gomo point of view they are providing exactly the same service as if you were in Ireland connecting via an Irish ISP.

I use the Yolla app for these types of calls that I don't have an allowance for. Calls tend to cost no more than a few cent a minute at most for the destinations I'd be calling.

Changed from a HTC to a S20 recently. Noticed a massive drop in mobile data speeds.

    Anyone have a similar issue?

Seems to be a known issue with the S20.
Are you on the latest bugfix update, UA3, firmware?

Be advised, initial roll-out is mainly to stock Samsung unbranded devices and it may take longer to arrive on some carrier branded models.

    The update = G98*F/BXXU5CUA3

    Download size = 450.69MB

    Build date = 07 January 2021
