Not sure why you think you’re not allowed to celebrate.

I got the idea from you TBF.
Since when was this thread about celebrating the relaxation of restrictions?

I think you well know that you and others mentioned the absence of discussion around all retail now reopen for business as implying this thread was a discussion mostly about taking note of which restrictions have been recently eased. That’s a misrepresentation of the main discussion points in this thread.

The implication was that the lack of noting the reopening of retail was an indication that posters are somehow unhappy that retail has reopened.

I’m happy that restrictions are being lifted, and also pretty disgusted at the speed of their lifting, and indeed the imposition of some of them at all - these aren’t mutually exclusive opinions to hold. And this thread has long been somewhere to discuss all of those opinions, whether they’re agreed with or not.

Discussing the Relaxation of Restrictions in the Relaxation of Restrictions thread is a misrepresentation?

    You sure?

Back to things that were never said? Or - ‘said no one ever’?

    You’ll forgive me if I borrow from your playbook;

Not discussed you mean or allowed to discuss or God forbid 'celebrate'.

Is there any other European country that is so slow at opening up as ourselves?

Literally none. We are the most backwards country on earth at this point.

I'm sure we were told back in Jan/Feb that the reopening would be based on data and not dates? Seems now it's all about dates?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,001 ✭✭✭✭Degag

It is really more a deference towards authority than a pro lockdown position.

Not throwing horrific, detestable slurs at our politicians and NPHET/HSE leaders/representatives on the internet shouldn't be seen as deference really but just how a normal human being should function.

    What do you mean?

It's (at least partially) based on vaccine rollout. Is that not data driven enough?

I imagine it is all based on vaccine rollout at this stage as the cases/hospitalisations etc have not varied massively since before the 17th May restrictions were announced at the beginning of the month.

I just thought they would be taking more things into account than vaccines as a huge part of the economy is still closed even with low cases/hospital figures.

Stick your finger randomly on a map of the world and go there for 6 months.

There's a very good chance you'll be crawling back on your hands and feet with a slightly different attitude.

Did you expect a horn to go off when we hit a certain number and we throw open the floodgates?

Honestly, given what we have seen over the last 14 months, I'd say Nphet just all read their horoscopes every morning and take it from there!!!

Still a better method than listening to the lad on YouTube with all easy solutions.

Meanwhile were only been told today about outdoor hospitality which is still 3 weeks away and no indication of an early reopen either

    What are you talking about?

Tony Holohan basing his health advise on what his horoscope says is better than listening to another person's point of view?

    Christ...

Nothing has changed i'm just a little annoyed that France/Austria are reopening earlier than us, while we're been told 'hold out for another 3 weeks'

The positivety meter went up a tad too high and had to be brought down a few notches.

What’s the story with the Eurovision Song Contest? Think it’s being held in the Netherlands and is a live event. Thought it was actually going to be on zoom or another platform. How many people will be there? Just thinking how much of a world away we are from that here yet and wondering if they can do concerts why can’t we.

Non-team sports competitions to start back with 100 person limit as recommended by Sport Ireland. Ludicrous stuff. I'm involved in athletics and it's pretty much impossible to have meaningful competition with such numbers (which includes officials etc). The sad thing is that the federation have just gone along with this rubbish, which is a mere recommendation, and not compulsory. Last year, with no vaccines, we had 200 per event, which in itself was a struggle to operate within. A year on, WITH vaccines, and the vulnerable (officials) vaccinated, we have half that. I despair.

    Another experiment.
Eurovision is being allowed to go ahead as a "Fieldlab" experiment

    Utterly pointless. Also.
Although hospital admissions have fallen in the past week, Dutch health officials say there has been a sharp rise in younger people being treated in this third Covid wave. The biggest increase has come from the 0-39 and 40-59 age groups.

Some hospitals have declared their intensive care units full, others have been forced to postpone routine operations to allow staff to care for Covid patients

IF you just read one more line.
These numbers will be reviewed further as the broader re-opening of sport continues across the Summer months.

Being grateful to a government who took away all your rights to arbitrarily give a few back (while extending their powers to take them all away again whenever they see fit) is called Stockholm Syndrome.

Could also be like Pavlov’s dog, training etc. Heard from an elderly person that people are finding it hard to converse with other people now just from staying in. Know some people didn’t leave their houses for a year, got groceries delivered etc. so very little interaction with others at all. Very bad for mental health.

Not much use when the National Athletics Championships are end of June. They have to take place before the closure of the Olympic qualification window end of June, otherwise the significant world ranking points for athletes chasing Olympic spots will be lost.

So, now if they power ahead with Nationals under ridiculous restrictions, most of us will get the boot, and they'll have to cherry pick a few athletes to invite, which makes a mockery of a national championships.

Ya but look on the bright side...none of those young fit athletes who have probably dedicated much of their life to their particular sporting endeavor will be in danger of catching Covid!!!
