Had a listen again of Ukraine to see what all the fuss is about. Feckin ragin Think About Things (Dadi Freyr lad) couldnt enter again this year.

The original video for it has serious Chernobyl imagery going on

Poor staging but it was an almost impossible ask to qualify considering which countries could vote tonight, Eastern Bloc.

Ah give it up. Our song was ok but Lesley's a really weak singer. Even with a decent vocalist it was always a borderline qualifier.

The most underrated song Ireland has sent in the last decade is Molly Sterling, Playing with Numbers. Great song, melody, singer, presentation. Still baffles me why it didn’t qualify.

Song was great but her vocal was quite off-putting imo, too kermit-ish and she was obviously nervous. It was the public vote that tanked it, it came 5th or 6th with juries afaik in the semi final.

The song was ok, better than last year's.
    But her vocals....poor.
Huh? How do you know the juries results?? I don't think they are released til the final is over?

I think Ryan OShaughnessy 2018 was the best we sent in recent years by some way- really nice song, good vocals

Marty's we wuz robbed schtick is funny because he gets to say it every year now.

I think he needs to ditch his usual schtick and slate the Irish act for once. Now that'd be entertaining.

Lesley sounded like she has a slightly weird regional English accent (like Norfolk or something)- I didn’t think it sounded great, certainly not a winner.

God Ireland were muck beyond belief. That was so poor it was a little sad. Who picked that rubbish.

Sad to realise Russia don't have last years act - they were great.

And no word yet on if Iceland will be good for Thursday.

    And it did pretty well.
It's almost as if we send a decent singer and song we can do alright!

The reaction online looks to be very shocked Croatia didn't make it

Yes that was very good too. I suppose I just preferred the melody to Playing with Numbers personally - especially the chorus over Ryan’s song.

Ireland’s main problem is we don’t take Eurovision seriously & haven't for some time. Similar to the U.K., any major act we have avoids it. Meanwhile across Europe they all enter & are performing to the top level. Ryan O’Shaughnessey had that experience & it showed in the way he performed on stage.
Lesley could stay songwriting some Eurovision entrants for RTÉ with different vocalists, she can create some catchy Eurovision type songs.
Sweden show the rest how it’s done. A high standard national contest. For Ireland to attempt something similar, the actual talent here would need to step up and get involved...

Iceland will be good! The song just isn't quite as catchy but still solid. I think top 5 possible

I love Lesley, I liked the song but my God those vocals. The staging was nowhere near where it needed to be either. I was not shocked in the slightest by us not qualifying.

RTE need to go back to the drawing board. Host a proper National Song Contest in a live music venue, not the bloody LLS Studio, where the acts will have to be able to sell their song live on stage to a television audience. Have international juries too so we can see what songs have international appeal. It is the only way we are going turn our fortunes around. These internal selections just are not working for us. We've only qualified once in the last 7 years and let's be honest that was mainly due to Ryan's 'Gay Dancers.'

Decent Irish acts should use Eurovision as a platform to promote their music. Duncan Lawrence has a billion streams on Spotify.

Australia should have won it last time out with Zero Gravity.
The staging of that song was sheer brilliance.

    2019 had exceptional quality.

That was a top notch year no doubt 3 or 4 really worthy winners

The worst act in 2019 was the interval act: Madonna.
By far the worst singer on the night.

Rte should have to answer for wasting money on sending that.

Honeslty it was shocking on the night.

Christ was that one were she hobbled down steps in an eye patch? Brutal

I sorta liked Sarah Mctiernan 2019- v catchy fun easygoing pop song- vocals unfortunately weren’t great in the night. She sounded rushed and out of breath. Lesleys song was worse (IMO) and vocals not a whole lot better. Staging was ridiculous and pathetically amateur by today’s standards

Only watched it back- poor visuals, average vocals and very boring uncatchy song. Would be a surprise if it had qualified

Not sure if we need a full on Melodifestivalen 2022 for our next pick but some kind of transparent public contest would be good.

The Late Late Show and modern Eurovision are diametrically opposed on the scale of pop culture, their paths should never cross.

Alternatively, I’m happy for RTÉ to show me some submitted songs and I’ll pick one to get us through the semis. If they pay me I might even get us into the top 10.

Btw, did someone in here earlier say that the same person that did our staging did Måns Z back in 2015? He is still my favourite staging of recent years. If that’s true then RTÉ must have skipped a final payment or something.

I found the staging of Ireland’s song bizarre. I was surprised it was done by the same person who staged Mans’ song for Sweden, it was like a cheap knock-off of Heroes and had none of the slickness. It was like kid’s TV and when she was walking on the treadmill, it reminded me of Peter Kay’s video for Amarillo.

I actually though there was technical issues at the end where she moved away from the threadmill, and performed on her own, and you could see the treadmill and the rest of the equipment in the background. I actually thought she was improvising at that stage as something had gone wrong. It just didn’t make sense. Normally when you do something like that, there’s reveal or a wow moment or something, but that was just odd.

Treadmills don’t even have to stink the place up, Robin Bengtsson had decent staging for Sweden in 2017(I think?). Also OK Go.

Just seen Irelands performance there and I must say it was awful, the vocals were shockingly bad, the stage was like something out of bosco, i fact bosco himself would have done a better job, we are now an embarrassment in this competition, not that I really care tbh because the whole thing is pure cringe and God awful anyway, on a side note who the **** voted for Israel they should be booted out for their butchering of the palastinians

Anyone know why quality Eurovision songs get no airplay on radio here? Proper contemporary, radio-friendly songs that win are never heard again on radio here. If Euphoria, Heroes or Arcarde were performed by known performers they would’ve absolutely gotten airplay.

The one song that did get regular airplay was Think About Things by Dadi Freyr, but that never even made it to the Eurovision. I always wonder if Eurovision went ahead last year, would that have been the case. It was almost like it was ok to play it because it wasn’t really a Eurovision song.

I don't think anyone minds if we do particularly well.
But when we are that bad it really makes you question whats going on at RTE.
There are lads/ladies on grafton street that would at least sing well - just grab one and through them on stage with a guitar and no more.

It would have been far better than that - whatever that was.

Ukraine hold the record for being the only country to have qualified from the semifinals every time they entered.

They should be at least top 5 on Saturday.

Indeed it was like through the magic door on Bosco.

Once she got out of that awful place and onto the stage the song picked up.

I was referring to the 2015 entry by Molly Sterling that the other poster mentioned - the jury results for this year won't be out until early Saturday morning at best.

Ukraine have moved up to 4th favourite to win :) They were about 9th or 10th before the show tonight. Would like to think they can contend, but will probably be slightly too volatile to garner enough jury support.
