That must be the worst thing Germany has ever done.

Those born after 2000 might not realise there was a time people actually cared about the ESC even though it was very camp and weird prior at the best of times.

It was the introduction of televoting in the late 90's that really destroyed it as any credible event.

Nowadays it's a running joke that needs to be put out of it's misery.
Very consistent with ridiculous comments tbf to ya

Every year I say the same thing. If RTE don't want to win it, stop entering. Rather than wasting money on songs that have no chance of even making a final. If we are to take it seriously again, then we need a national song contest revived. Give the young and old indeed, songwriters a chance and get ten songs to a final vote. How can we randomly select bang average acts for the last 20 years with very few exceptions and keep on doing it.

Ireland's entry was a odds-on qualifier among virtually every single Eurovision media outlet. It wasn't the song that got us knocked out tonight.
Eurovision media outlets...I would pay little attention to what they say.

Betting odds we were a non qualifier...everywhere

It's their own fault really being so far away.

    Everybody needs good neighbours.

Australia should have won it last time out with Zero Gravity.
The staging of that song was sheer brilliance.

The most underrated song Ireland has sent in the last decade is Molly Sterling, Playing with Numbers. Great song, melody, singer, presentation. Still baffles me why it didn’t qualify.

Ireland was definitely not an odds on qualifier at any stage. That is a fact, the bookies know.

All the major outlets have called the winner and qualifiers year after year.

You could have got 7/1 on Betfair for us to qualify. In a field of 10 qualifiers from 16, those odds tell you all you need to know.

I don't know about that, betting odds tend to be a much better indicator imo.
Those Eurovision sites tend do qualifiers based one studio versions etc as well sometimes.

Anyone see this? Much better song

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjAejydm7lk
Never heard of that at all until now
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_European_Song_Contest
I like that the UK is broken up, England and Scotland sent tunes.
And 'The Moon' is a competitor too :)

I just don't understand why we couldn't send something like that this year (now it's not my cup of tea but at least it's original and a bit rousing like)
I don't care if Lesley Roy was hard done by last year to be honest because last year her song was also awful and cringeworthy - whoever originally picked her to represent Ireland needs their head testing.

    It was fantastic.

I think it was ahead of its time, it wouldn't be out of place against Arcade etc. It is the one Irish song in recent years that was extremely hard done by.

Stuck a few euro on Ukraine each way.

And it was a baffling stage production from Ireland tonight and I'm afraid the singing wasn't great. Times have moved light years ahead of Rock n Roll Kids or In Your Eyes.

    Totally agree.
And not some thrown together shambles on the late late as a final.

Still the greatest ever Eurovision winner though

I'm tempted too. It's going to be open this year and I don't like betting in an open year. I like to throw all the money on a sure thing, which Holland was last time.

Rubbish. Niamh Kavanagh was the best of all of Ireland's wins. RARK was the worst.

    Very open year.

I have bet on top 10
Cyprus and Serbia (it's trash but catchy)

    And top 5
    Lithuania and Iceland

I think it's partially because two of the big 6 are really fancied Italy and France. I expect Malta to fly up betting after that performance

This thread is always one of my annual favourites.

Are the people in charge of picking our song still in their jobs because someone’s too embarrassed to fire them or what?

Every single year, I’m able to pick out at least 8 of the 10 going through each semi final, and I’m just some guy on a couch, it’s not rocket science.

    She was a great winner.

But for all the people saying we need to send Johnny Logan....look what happened when we sent Niamh Kavanagh again?
We need to try something new, new team to pick song and singer for a national competition need to look forward not back.
As it is now only a matter of time before Sweden win and overtake us with most winners.

It's the national broadcasters preogative I guess,. They can send who they want. I suppose we could petition them into reviving a national song contest but there would have to be a concerted effort for months and not just a few days in May to make them listen.

Had a listen again of Ukraine to see what all the fuss is about. Feckin ragin Think About Things (Dadi Freyr lad) couldnt enter again this year.

When you have 10 out of 16 countries qualifying and Ireland have only qualified once in the last 6 years, it is time to give up

Not at all. Just send a decent, well executed song and we'll do well. It's a really simple format ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
