Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Yeah, half way into the article they start on about mods being used in gangland feuds, whats that got to do with their legal use ? Always have to try and infer something about us and crime :confused:.

    Its not as bad as many/most previous articles I've read. One error is they're not a restricted firearm, they're unrestricted. So a Superintendent can grant one.

    One point that annoys the piss out of me, as tudderone said, why (rhetorical) do they insist on putting a little feck you into every firearm article by mentioning criminals with legal gun owners. The very mention of illegality forever links us to criminals in the minds of those that know no better. This is media manipulation.

    I would question the numbers for one reason, the unreliability of PULSE. However if it right or close to it, then its only 8% of firearm holders that have one.

    It's not what's wrote in the article is as much the problem but why did the article come about in the first place. Somebody is trying to stir up Joe public with this!!!! I remember this happening before about the number of pistols licensed in the country and then poof in the blink of an eye they were grand fathered

    It's only the first in a series. Next up: Mating pair of Kestrels shot by silenced, high powered rifle.

    It's just aggravating when they link our sport with criminality. It's about as relevant as stating the amount of hurling clubs in the country if someone is assaulted with a hurl.

    First they came for the socialists...

    ....... and not once does it cover any health and safety benefits. In the UK moderators are considered mandatory part of H&S kit for professional stalkers and guide services.

    More interested in the negativity rather than the positive side- reduces impact on hearing damage, improved accuracy , humane dispatch and less disturbances to the environment both wildlife and curtain twitchers.

    Jim O Callaghan TD for Dublin Bay South is mentioned as the person who sought the information.

    He's an interesting guy, author, ex rugby player, high profile barrister, seems like an all round high achiever.

    He might have been asked by one of his constituents to find out the information for them, that's why a lot of these requests are sought.

    There was a crazy shooting incident at the regency hotel boxing weigh in. Maybe that means anyone involved with boxing is a crazed gunman or "gangland" (wherever that is) criminal ?

    P.S. just looked at the article again, and clicking on the journalists name reveals he is the Irish Times CRIME correspondent !

    Well most so called 'reporters' and such never actually go out and report today. Some sit in their homes and just write lots and lots of articles on subjects that they may or not bothered to research (via internet and we all know how exact that is). Then they make them available to newspaper/website and when the news is slack, then maybe those articles may get picked out to fill the webpage.

    Any other reporting is mainly through other armchair generals who never put their shoes on as well.

    Anybody could set themselves up as a 'reporter/journalist' tomorrow morning with a keyboard and internet connection.

    The result is the stuff you refer to. Of course some of them have an agenda. The rest you can figure for yourselves.

    Much of that article is written using (and misconstruing) the most up to date Commissioers guidelines.


    This bit for instance is a direct copy and paste "shooters are also increasingly using silencers for target practice to reduce noise pollution. However, as ear protectors can be worn on firing ranges, “it is necessary to weigh the disadvantages of the use of a silencer against this benefit,”


    but taken in the context of the article it reads as if we are all getting silencers(sic) for criminal means.

    Errr...HERE is a good reason for us using silencers... EU directive on noise abatement at source https://ec.europa.eu/environment/archives/enlarg/handbook/noise.pdf

    states simply that all efforts must be made to reduce noise at the source of issuance,and that isusing ear protection to those affected is a secondary and not effective method of control...[So yaeah boo sucks Comiisoners guidelines on this]

    But yeah it is funny alright Someone sht stirring again? Seems to be the fashion, all of a sudden in the UK where there is talk of licensing crossbows...There is a "surge in crossbow crime" even with some drunken idiot walking around Barnsley with a loaded Xbow last weekend.:eek:

    In my initial posting, this is exactily what I was thinking. Why this piece now and for what reason, there must be some valid reason (crazy theory or otherwise) behind the story or is it just space filling because there's nothing else worth covering.

    Older fogey myself but always believe when you see/smell smoke, there is a fire somewhere or approaching...............

    I see the article was amended on 10th May, when they changed the last line.
    Originally the article stated that firearm numbers were down to 190,000, from 320,000 several years ago.
    This has been changed to 220,000.

    A poor article full of factual inaccuracies, demonstrating the limited research of the author.

    The author makes the a comparison between the criminal use of moderators and the use by lawful shooters. The comparison is irrelevant and out of context.

    Lawful citizens use many items that criminals also use to commit offences. Knives, axes, guns and even computers are used to commit cyber crimes. Owning one of these items is not indicative of poor character or criminality.

    The fact of the matter is that lawful gun owners, that are rigourously vetted are using a device to protect their hearing. This is not newsworthy or insightful.

    From reading his articles.I think our boy had a deadline to fill and this looked like an interesting topic,but he had to get it done within an hour of the printing deadline. He did an interesting one or podcast on how the AGS became an unarmed police force.
    TBH I don't see any deliberate malice in this apart from it looks like an essay I would be writing on Monday morning going into school on the bus!:eek:

    I'd give him a fool's pardon on this ... Once...unlike his predecessor Cmdt [?]Clonon, with his military experience and all knowledge of firearms did worse TV and media hatchet jobs on Irish shooting than this. More worrying is would some no-hoper TD pick this up and try nd make it a hobby horse for votes and notorierty?

    Looks like they have updated their sales policy, I see it is not available to order online anymore.

    They could have been bought a couple of months ago without any need to produce evidence of a licence.

    Maybe that's why it was raised as an issue by the TD/Barrister/Criminologist.
