Thanks for sharing. Does this mean good to go to Italy end of June?

And not have to quarantine on return, or worry about $2k fine.

    Thanks

The €2k fine is still the question

You'll still need to quarantine, just not in a hotel. Unless the green cert thing has overturned that requirement by then.

As of now, it'd be fine and home quarantine unless something changes.

there is the problem that the a large amount of people will not self quarantine as our tracing system is not enforced.

It is in some areas so you can't just assume safety on that score.

There is the solution that by August the vast majority of people across the EU will be vaccinated and that risks will have substantially reduced at that point.

We are about 8 weeks from having a critical mass of the population vaccinated. Once the gates open track and trace will become pretty difficult anyway

That would have been a problem from the very first positive test in this country, both already in and traveling to this country.

Track and trace has unfortunately been an abject failure here in Ireland. Indeed I see the passport office staff who had been redeployed to work at Track and trace are now returning to the Passport Office. No mention of the wonderful app in at least 10 months. T&T will not be as important going forward as the green cert covers travellers PCR/Recovered/vaccinated. Hopefully the T&T that does occur will be a lot more effective

This headline quotes the Prime Minister of the Netherlands as saying their aim is to have the digital green cert in place by June 21st...I cannot read all of the article as I’m not subscribed to the Irish times at the moment. But it seems like the date of implementation is getting pushed back..if Ireland add on another 6 weeks to that...it would write off the summer for many.

Yeah, 6 weeks from June 21st is early August.
Would leave a very narrow (and expensive) window for people tied to school holidays.

Not sure it makes that much difference.

Almost half the parents tied to school holidays will have to get their (older) kids PCR tested anyway.

Since my kids can't drive themselves to a testing centre it's no inconvenience to get myself done at the same time.

Actually the rules are quite interestingly worded. They refer to "international travel" but then exclude the CTA from that definition.

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/covid-19-coronavirus-restrictions-what-you-can-and-cannot-do#travelling-within-the-uk-the-republic-of-ireland-and-the-channel-islands

As far as I can tell it isn't even required to have a PCR test to travel from Ireland to the UK, at least from a British perspective.

From a legal perspective, the UK doesn't consider Ireland a 'foreign' country, be that an insult or otherwise. Here is the pertinent bit from the 1949 Ireland Act (UK):

    Quote/
It is hereby declared that, notwithstanding that the Republic of Ireland is not part of His Majesty’s dominions, the Republic of Ireland is not a foreign country for the purposes of any law in force in any part of the United Kingdom or in any colony, protectorate or United Kingdom trust territory, whether by virtue of a rule of law or of an Act of Parliament or any other enactment or instrument whatsoever, whether passed or made before or after the passing of this Act, and references in any Act of Parliament, other enactment or instrument whatsoever, whether passed or made before or after the passing of this Act, to foreigners, aliens, foreign countries, and foreign or foreign-built ships or aircraft shall be construed accordingly. /Unquote

As far as I know, that act has never been superseded.

Some member states would start using the system immediately, but others would wait as late as August as the 27 governments have agreed there would be a six-week period in which to implement the system, he said.

    That will be us

Would still hope that mid June would spell the end for the €2k travel fine i.e. travel with 14 days at home quarantine.

Is there any hope of foreign holidays this summer? We have hols booked to Portugal from last year for mid August. Flights paid for and have until mid June to decide on accommodation as can probably roll it over to next year again. Holiday is booked since 2019!!! But id love to go. Travelling with my parents who will be fully vaccinated, my husband and my 2 kids under 10. Both myself and my husband will probably only have received one jab by then and not sure what is the story with kids. We are all prepared to travel but not pay through the nose for PCR tests and all that jazz!

I’d say you will be able to go but will need a PCR for both journeys.

Would my kids have to have them as well? Just trying to figure out if it's even going to be financially viable.

I don’t know, I have seen some places say they are needed for over 6 but it depends on the country. If both your kids are over 6 then it could be 400 each way - a fairly significant cost.

Your parents should escape the PCR tests and perhaps kids depending on age, especially for arriving into Portugal.

You and hubby will need PCR's on the way back into Ireland

Surely when we're all vaccinated and the green cert is in, you won't need a PCR after that. Seems crazy if you do.

That’s what I hoped but the UK plan yesterday still required PCRs? Did it give any allowance for vaccinated?

Don't think so but EU plan will hopefully be better than the pitiful crap the UK released.

I expect the Brits are trying to get Greece and Spain to push at the EU side for some kind of mutual recognition.

My kids will be 5 and 8 at the time. Ah we'll see what the next month brings. I'd just love to get away if we could this year. Has been a tough one but will see what happens in the next few weeks.

Looks like the government not passing much heed on Swann :

“The Minister of State for European Affairs has said that inter-county travel will be permitted from Monday on a 32-county basis”

“ Responding to concerns raised by Northern Ireland Health Minister Robin Swann about the risk of non-essential cross border travel, Thomas Byrne said if there was a feeling in the North that restrictions were needed that was a matter for politicians there.””

“” But if Robin Swann feels the need to introduce restrictions on the North that's a matter for them. But we haven't done this on a 26-county basis at any point it's always been done the 32-county basis."

IMO if the North have concerns about cross border travel for shopping etc then they should have mirrored their openings with ours. Now I dont know if that was feasible but anyhoo.
