Donnelly confirmed countries are now only being added based on variants of concern and no longer on incidence rate.

By that logic should countries added due to the 2.5 metric as opposed to VOC be removed?

"Separately, Mr Donnelly told an Oireachtas committee on Tuesday Ireland was likely to take part in proposed new European arrangements to allow people who can prove they are fully vaccinated to travel in the EU."

    From this article
    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/vaccine-plan-redrawn-to-accelerate-rollout-as-summer-reopening-plans-finalised-1.4549489

What annoys me about this is "likely to take part" and "fully vaccinated" only people being referred to. No mention of negative test or recovery from Covid.

Poor journalism as much as anything else..

MEP's are voting today. What they are voting on is the green cert with the 3 options as it were, any one of which will allow travel i.e. proof of antibodies, neg PCR test or vacination.

No doubt the Irish Gov will wriggle like worms but hopefully this is the first step towards free travel by mid July (in our case)

Has anyone seen anything on when/how USA and Canada plan to open back up for tourism? I would have thought with USA and their vaccines they would be looking at letting people back in but I don’t ever see anything on it? Just interested really in how they are going to get it back up and running.

Good news for anyone flying from Belfast - Spain hopes to be on the UK green list from June, and the UK will categorise Spanish islands separately - potentially means no self-quarantine needed on return from Balearic Islands within a few weeks and from the rest of Spain from June:

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/health/variants-of-concern-found-among-56-covid-19-cases-in-hotel-quarantine-40364039.html

    Ignoring the click bait headline (5 cases of variants - unnamed so probably UK, which should probably be renamed Irish at this stage) there was some very encouraging comments made by SD;

The minister said officials here are working behind the scenes on the “passport” to allow foreign travel.

Speaking at the Oireachtas Health Committee yesterday, he said: “Technology is being worked on in the background and if an Irish citizen lands in Paris they will have a unique code on their phone.”

“Very significant work had been done in Ireland and we are looking favourably at participation in the digital green cert,” he said.

“If it works for those who are exempted it will enable free travel in a way not possible since the virus arrived.”

Responding to TD Cathal Crowe, who asked if Ireland will be at the same pace at other countries to have it place, he said the briefing he had was that Ireland was “on track” to have it in place at the same time as other EU member states.

As per previous posts above, calls to add European countries were rejected. In another article, they said SD raced through a list of suggested additions so quickly that people struggled to keep up. I think that the penny has finally dropped that they f%%ked up spectacularly. I can't see the 'variant' EU countries lasting long on the list either. At one point Italy had fewer cases per 100k of one of the variants than Ireland. I think we'll see the EU quietly dropped off the list shortly. I think Ireland's most hated man is trying to claw his way out of the hole he dug, while increasing his twitter mentions.

Canada no idea as their vaccination program isn't far on, but I'd be pretty surprised if US wasn't ok sometime in the summer from some places in Europe anyway (who knows with here).

I don't think it's mandatory for them like it is for us but theyre free to use it (those 3 and Liechtenstein). Id imagine they'd all use it since tourism is a bit part of some areas in those countries.

The Irish government won't know you were out of the country. easyJet just like the Ferry don't require many details to travel. Name and phone number only. Jane doe could travel over and Back just as easy as ldriving from Wales to England.

They require your name, address, date of birth and payment details. Again, you remain on the manifest.

Will they chase you or catch you? Probable not but maybe

You have to register your full details including passport number when you book a ferry, but I don't see any government agency getting those details unless there was a major case of infection on the boat.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I'd say it would be perfectly normal for passenger details to be passed on to immigration/customs etc. And I'd say they have them before you arrive at your destination!

You don't technically need a passport to go to England by ferry (unless the ferry company's own rules have changed) so I'd imagine that that some other form of ID would do. Driving Licence etc.

Maybe from the Republic. From NI its and internal trip so its pretty straight forward.

Sorry my mistake its Nationality that you have to have logged with Irish Ferries when you make a booking. About two years back they added it to the booking process.

That is likely to do with CTA rules.

All manifests are logged as standard practice.

Customs, immigration and Gardai can access it for a variety of reasons

No, not at all. Was talking to a work colleague yesterday in Toronto and they are on full lockdown with their hospital system in meltdown. Adults being treated in children's hospitals as all ICU beds are full etc

I know a lot of people on here had got passports within days of renewing online. I had given up hope on the lottery system, the wife's application had been in since February. Just arrived in the post! This is the most optimistic I've felt about travel in months. So if you're waiting on yours, don't give up hope yet. Roll on July : )

And just when I though the day couldn't get better, SD went and said this.....

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has said that the State’s Covid-19 vaccine rollout is not a race to the “31st of June”.

With just 30 days in the month of June, the Minister’s gaffe is now trending on social media in Ireland.

Mr Donnelly told Newstalk Breakfast that there was “nothing magic” about the date of June 31st.

Another "Awful Boo-Boo" from a senior Govt. minister, he's in good company with Simon "18 other Covid's" Harris...

So travel fully opened on the 31st of Never?

You corrected yourself further down I think, but passport numbers are not needed for ferry bookings. Certainly not to UK anyway.

Our minister for health thinks June 31st is a day, I'm not overly concerned by their ability to track Irish peoples movements abroad using passports.

    At least when it comes to the discussion on reopening he might be put back in his box, along with NPHET;

The Cabinet sub-committee — made up of the three coalition leaders, Health Minster Stephen Donnelly, Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe and Public Expenditure Minister Michael McGrath — will then meet later today to consider Nphet's advice.

I think the bean counters are going to start applying pressure. The last thing FF needs is another austerity situation. I think common sense might start to prevail.

The only way he should be at these meetings is getting the tea and scones for the "real" politicians.

But he`d probably get that wrong aswell.

Currently anyone who lives within 20KMs of the border can cross it legally and then are bound by local laws.

Anybody within an essential reason to travel can cross the border and then are bound by local laws.

It would appear that travel to Spain will be legally possible from the UK after May 17th.

A holiday in Spain this summer looks on now.

I have no reason to visit any of the MHQ countries. I assume Spain will not make that list.

I can do all of the above legally.

Great news, be lovely to get away.

Sad to see money in the pockets of Belfast airport rather than Dublin but the govt have stuck their head in the sand, imposed disproportionate draconian messures on travel and have driven people to taking these measures for their own sanity.

Same. London in May and then off for a few weeks around the Greek islands in July. Whether I need to go via Belfast, or London or just book a dentists' appointment in Athens, I don't really care. Any moral authority the government has to tell me where I can and cannot travel to has long since evaporated.
