    Mon 8th- 9 miles GA

Working out in the rain for the day so I had well over 10k steps done before starting into this one so can't say I was feeling it early on!
That feeling passed soon enough and was just a vanilla trek afterwards with an average of 7:42/mile.

Wed 10th- 11 miles with hill intervals

Was supposed to do this on the Tuesday but with work and other stuff the day got away from me.
Oh what a day of weather this was! Thought the clouds looked pretty threatening as I was setting off and sure enough 3 minutes into the run and my shorts and DCM19 finishers top are absolutely stuck to me after a heavy shower of rain.
Couple of miles into the run the sun is back out and everything looks good but the wind is getting stronger and stronger and of course I'm facing into it as soon as I reach my chosen hill. Not sure what gradient it is but its a long drag that gets progressively steeper and no problem of running out of hill before the prescribed 3 minute interval is up!
Didn't enjoy these one bit but that was solely down to the weather. Absolutely drenched and running uphill into a strong headwind along the hard shoulder of main road meant that any time a truck passed I was almost running on the spot thanks to the drag of wind after each one. Couple of beeps from passing cars pointing at the crazy guy running on those conditions did nothing for my humour!
Pulled the plug after the 4th interval, couldn't face another one!
Didn't notice it while running but my top weighed a ton taking it off back at the car!

Thurs 11th- 10 mile endurance run

Did this one on way home from work.
Getting changed and the black clouds are back so put on my light running jacket for this one. Manage to get the first couple of miles done before the first sprinkling of light rain but it feels slightly stingy and sure enough its the start of a hail shower. Running into a really strong headwind means I'm absolutely bombarded with hail for a full 2 mins. I have to put my head down as I'm getting battered and just praying I don't run into someone or something coming in my direction!
They finish just as mile 3 is completed with this block of the endurance run being done in 7:48, 7:42 and 7:37.
Out into the open bog for the 4th mile where I have to lift the pace a bit to start the middle block but I'm straight into the headwind now and my jacket is like a parachute. With all the white noise from the wind and my jacket flapping I don't actually hear a couple of cars passing me from behind.
Once this mile is over though I'm back into an area of trees so out of the wind. Miles 4-6 are 7:27 (Effort wise I'd say that one could have been a minute quicker!), 7:23 and 7:20.
Last 4 miles take in a different loop but again it's not nearly as exposed and the wind is working with me for the majority of these 4 miles which come in at 7:05, 6:59, 6:55, and 6:56.

Friday 12th- 9 miles with hill sprints and strides

Same as last week but I actually remember the right number of sprints and strides for this one! Take in the 9 mile loop again but in reverse so that I get the hill in the second half of the run.
Enjoy the effort of the 6 hill sprints and then the 8 sets of 20 second strides straight after. Lovely day out for a run too!

Saturday 13th- 12 mile endurance run.

Same type run as Thursday except an extra mile in each block. Nothing too exciting or memorable about it!

Sunday 14th- 6 mile recovery run

Handy run out around the clonmore loop and home again. Picked Leicester this weekend in LMS and left when it was 0-0 after 30 mins or so. Spent most of the run imagining how they were going to let me down etc so was nice to click into the phone when I got home to see they had won 5-0, I live for another week!
    Average pace of 8:24/mile.

Nice feeling again to put a couple of 50+ mile weeks back to back. Hopefully everything goes to plan and I add another 10 weeks to them!

    Monday 15th- 10 miles GA

The plan had 9 miles in it but said I'd try and do the 1 second progression for the Boards March Challenge.
Lovely day out for a run around my go too loop. This loop is literally the back of beyond, it's so quiet but todays nice pace meant I was really able to take in the amount of littering and fly tipping going on. everything from bunches of bald tires to stair gates and everything in between including bags of used nappies, like WTF like.
Started the first mile at 7:49 and missed the first 2 splits by a second each time. I then hit the next 6 bang on and was cock a hoop! Was too fast doing the final one so slowed almost to a walk for last 30 metres but miscalculated the couple of seconds it takes for the mile to beep after the face goes from 0.99 to 1.00 so did this one a second too slow and fecked up the whole 10 mile slow progression. To cap it all i forgot to stop the watch until i did the short bit to my car and finished with a distance of 10.05

    Tuesday 16th- 10 miles with 3 x 10 mins @ LT

Day in the office today so did this one on my way home around my own personal route!
LT should be in the range 6:10-6:15/mile when I was in better shape but said I'd aim for that this time out. I can't really remember these intervals tbh but i did them a bit on the quick side averaging about 6:05 each, I do remember being glad the third one was over though.
Before starting this one i caught the tail end of Moncrief Show and he had a guest on talking about some American cocaine smuggler and how he had to shed his load after being intercepted by DEA plane, a bear ended up eating one of the bales and has become pretty famous in death after it. Of course the show ends with Eric Clapton singing Cocaine which i had as an earworm for the whole trip, could have been worse as its a good tune!
Checked the song out on Youtube later and the comments are hilarious with people inserting their own lyrics to the tune set piece.
    My own favourite being:

    "When your parents get shot
And there's a clown to be fought
    Bruce Wayne" :pac:

    Wednesday 17th- 4 miles @ easy

Mrs CBG was on nights so swapped Wednesday and Thursday of the plan around. Handy trot around the Clondra loop on a lovely morning.

Thursday 18th- 10 mile endurance run

Maybe my favourite type of run lately. Nothing too exciting or notable about this one. Hit the 3 target paces and ticked it off the list.

    Friday 19th- 8 miles with 2 sets of 5 x 300 metre intervals

First time setting up a workout via Garmin Connect (ReeReeG would be so proud!!).
15 minute warm up and then into them. Plan said mile pace which last years Boards TT gave me as 5:09 so aimed for that.
Pushed them too hard early doors not realising how deceptively long 300 metres actually is! The first 5 splits were 5:02, 4:55, 4:53, 5:01 and 5:04. Was glad of the 4 minute break between sets!
Next 5 on the homeward journey were 5:00, 4:48, 4:54, 5:01, and 5:09 where i was well out of steam!
Note to self, never underestimate a 300 metre interval again!

    Saturday 20th- 10 mile progression

An attempt at the medium risk progression challenge which looks for alternate 1 second and 33 second progression splits.
Took the first mile nice and handy at 8:46 but did the next one at 8:44 (flip sake!)
Next mile was 8:11 which was bang on but ended up with the same split for the next mile.
Moving up a gear again and I land on 7:37 (1 second out). A bit further on and i can see 2 ladies walking and doing so socially distant meaning they are either side of the 1 car width road. If they don't hear me approaching I know i could give them a fright so I abandon the loop and just turn around.
For whatever reason I have a nose bleed during this mile and of course I'm wearing a plain white t shirt! Luckily its a light enough one so i don't quite look like roadkill when it finishes.
I miss the next progression with another 7:37 split but get the next one bang on at 7:04 but am too quick for next one at 7:02.
Miss the last 2 splits as well by a second or 2 with splits of 6:28 and 6:25 but an enjoyable run none the less and really helps with motivations so shout out to Shotgunmcos for the great idea!

    Sunday 21st- 6 miles @ easy

Lovely morning out for a gentle run around. Following on from my earlier Clapton earworm, this morning I had another banging tune of his in Layla going through my head. Images of pink cadillacs and poor old Batts in the meat chill for company the whole trip (surely everyone gets the reference!!).

Brill to see ariana and Treviso smashing PBs in virtual TTs, really helps keep the motivation levels topped up, well done guys!

I haven't listened to Layla in years, isn't it mad how songs can trigger certain memories...My aunt & uncle were obsessed with Eric Clapton & named their 1st daughter Layla. Tragically she was murdered over 20 years ago & that song was played at her funeral, was tough to listen to it after that but I put it on earlier & enjoyed listening to it again...what a classic song!

    Monday 22nd- 10 miles GA

Lunch time run around my go to loop with few other bits added in to make up the distance. Had an intention of attempting the high risk progression challenge but Mile 2 beeped in at exact same time as the first mile so parked that idea and just kept things simple! Average of 7:45 min/mile.

    Tuesday 23rd- 9 miles GA

Step back week so no Lactate Tuesday session but more GA miles. Supposed to be 8 but my loop is 9 so no big deal.
Part way through the second mile i decided to adjust and have another attempt at the high risk progression. 2 second progression on the first split and again with the next one. Bang on a second down for the next one but totally lost concentration for the next one and ended up a second up so binned the attempt again
Only notable thing about the run was a pine martin jumping out of a ditch right beside me! I was a bit of a nature lover as a kid but never seen a pine martin in the flesh but there must be an explosion in numbers locally as they are pretty common road kill on my local roads.
Run done again bang on 7:45 min/mile.

Wednesday 24th- 9 mile endurance run

Around my go to loop yet again (I can't wait for the 5k restriction to be lifted!).

Can't remember anything too exciting about this one, no close encounters with nature anyway! Hit the 3 pace zones bang on. Enjoyable trek around.

    Thursday 25th- 7 miles with 3 sets of 4 x 200m

In the office today so decided to chance a lunchtime run.
Just over 2 miles to get warmed up and then into the first set of intervals. The very first rep was uphill and just up ahead i can see a lady struggling up it on a mountain bike. My watch starts the countdown beep for the end of the first rep just as I'm about to pass her so i keep going for an extra 5 seconds to avoid looking like a stalker! Finish out the first set fine through the forest road (reps are 4:52, 4:58, 5:05, and 5:07 off a target of 5:10).
Back out onto the main road just as i start the second rep and boy is it windy!

The second set is done in 4:44, 5:02, 4:56, and 5:08 (getting the feel of a required pace isn't a strong point of mine!) Feeling that set so walk the 30 second recovery before breaking into the 4 minute recovery jog.

The third set was a killer with a really strong headwind being strengthened further by the oncoming main road traffic. First one wasn't too bad being downhill but next 2 were uphill and last one was horrible where i was pretty much running on the spot as a couple of artic trucks passed me! These sets came in at 5:09, 5:08, 5:12, and 5:30

Another short walk recovery before finishing it out back in the office carpark.
God i hate when its windy!

Friday 26th- 11 mile endurance run

Mrs CBG is working nights this weekend so brought this one forward a day to fit it in. Out and about before the kids were due home from half day before mid term break.
Chanced heading out without a rain jacket despite it not looking too nice out. Into mile 2 and the hail stones arrive but nowhere near as bad as the buffeting i got a few weeks earlier! Very quiet out on the loop but an enjoyable run up to mile 7 before moving up to sub 7 min/mile pace for the last 4 miles when it starts lashing rain. I actually enjoy running in the rain so its a nice way to finish it up!

    Saturday 27th- 5 miles @ easy

Handy trot at 8:30 min/mile pace out and back along the N5 before Mrs CBG has to go to work. Have the entire road pretty much to myself, eerily quiet!

In other news after a lot of humming and hawwing the last couple of months I reached out to some online coaches. Spoke to very nice guy Saturday night (an immediate plus to him was he spared me almost the whole Luxembourg debacle! My eldest actually had tears in his eyes when I went into the sitting room in the 89th minute).
Was very impressed with his sheer enthusiasm so said I'd dip my toe in the water and try something different and see how things go. Simultaneously nervous and excited about what lies ahead! Into a base building type schedule to start with (I'll do almost anything to get out of running a 5k :pac:).

Not at all. John Starrett is his name. Treviso gave him a glowing reference and the proof has been in his times this year.
In the current times I just said why not and it should help keep up the enthusiasm and motivation.

    Monday 29th- 8 miles @ easy

Nice handy introduction to the new training plan! Pre run stretches is a new discipline to get used to although it was only a minute or 2 of doing the lunge matrix.
Handy loop around the bog on the way home from work averaging 8:27/mile.

    Tuesday 30th- 8 miles with 20 mins @ 6:30/mile pace

Pre lunch run. Lovely day out, sunny and warm and even during the warmup i had a decent sweat going already. The watch beeps down the end of the 20 minute warm up and I'm into it. Not great timing as I approach a small hill and a mark of how bad I am at judging pace is that early into the first mile I check the watch to see 7:00 being the lap pace while upping it a bit leads it to show 6:00 pace shortly after!
Settle into it after that and keep it consistent and splits are 6:29, 6:30, 6:26 and 6:22 for the small carry over to make the 20 mins.
20 minute cool down to finish up during which 8:00/mile pace feels like just above walking pace all of a sudden.

    Thursday 1st- 8 miles @ easy

Same route as Monday and just as handy. Average pace of 8:28/mile.

    Friday 2nd- 8 miles @ easy

Jaunt over the Shannon into Clondra and up along the Royal Canal before looping back into the village. Went this route on spur of the moment just for something else to look at. Another scorcher of a day but the canal walk was still pretty quiet. Still had time for a close encounter with a small dog who snuck up behind me and then started into barking and trying to nip my ankles, Luckily he wasn't built for endurance and soon fell back!
    Average of 8:27/mile.

    Saturday 3rd- 11 miles with 40 mins @ 6:50/mile pace.

Gentle ish introduction to the long runs on the plan. Headed out after doing the shopping in town. Beautiful morning out around the bog loop. 20 minute warm up including some strides and then into it. Bit of jostling early on to fall into the correct pace but was fine after that and the 40 mins sped by. Splits were pretty bang on give or take a few seconds under. 20 minute cool down to finish it up.

Bang to plenty of time to see Chelsea inexplicably lose at home to WBA and finish my run in Last Man Standing!
Finished Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy over a couple of Bulmers that evening. Very good but I would prefer No Country for Old Men or The Road.

    Sunday 4th- 8 miles @ easy

Out over the Shannon again and into Clondra but down a long cul de sac this time just for something else to have a nose around at! Nothing too exciting to report. Average of 8:24/mile.

Second week is more of the same with a bit more time added to the Tuesday and Saturday sessions. Could get used to the easy running on 4 days though!

Yeah its a long time since I read The Road but it's grim alright. Should have said that the only reason I read Blood Meridian was that I was coming off te back of another western genre book- Lonesome Dove.
It's plot of following a cattle drive across hundreds of miles in America doesn't sound too exciting but it's one of best stories I've ever read, would encourage anyone to read it.

    Monday 5th- 8 miles @ easy

The most notable thing about this run was the weather. We had a BBQ on Saturday but it was Baltic out today. There was actually a small flurry of snow about 3 miles into the run!
Just out and about on local roads the wrong side of the Shannon! Took in running past the old Atlantic Milling building. Was one of the biggest floor area factories in the country 30 odd years ago but all closed up and derelict looking now, was a big local employer, pity.

    Tuesday 6th- 20 & 10 mins @ 6:30

Felt even colder today if that's possible. Stuck my nose out the door and retreated to the side of the house out of the wind to do my warmup stretches!

Out around the bog loop for this. 20 minute warm up with some strides at the latter end and then into the first block. Did my usual thing of being way too fast to start but soon settles into it. Had to lift the effort a bit in the 3rd mile as I was out into open country and there was a strong very cold head wind but finished them all at 6:28.
5 minute recovery and then into the 10 minute block. Again controlled enough and finished the last 2 minutes being battered by hail, lovely. 6:29 for both of these splits. 20 minute cool down (if it was even necessary!) to finish up.

    Thursday 8th- 8 miles @ easy

Handy one around the bog loop after work. Nicer weather for this one. Threw in 4 20 second strides around the halfway mark but nothing too exciting other than that.

    Friday 9th- 8 miles @ easy

Another handy up and around the local roads. Fly tipping watch today discovered an old ironing board and one of those Henry hoovers

    Saturday 10th- 50 mins @ 6:50

Started into this one after doing the weekly shop, wiping it all down and putting it away.
30 minute warm up to start. Handy enough but it might be on the long side as my legs start to feel complacent that this is going to be the height of today's exertion! Throw in a few strides towards the end of the 30 minutes just to knock that idea out of them.
The 50 minute phase is nice and relaxed, I'm enjoying the slow build up to training but I'm fully aware the pain train will be slowly arriving over the next few months. 30 minute cool down to finish up at 14.7 miles which I think is probably my longest run since virtual Dublin marathon.

    Sunday 11th- 8 miles @ easy

Lovely morning out for this one. I take in the old main road and have it all to myself. Nice and relaxed way to finish the week.

Given the week that's in it, my ear worm for most of these runs was:

    Monday 12th- 8 miles back @ easy

Kids back to school today :) Did this one as soon as I got home from dropping them off. Handy one around some of the local roads. Nothing too exciting about it, did I mention kids are back at school!

    Tuesday 13th- 20 and 15 mins @ 6:30 pace

Lovely sunny morning out for this one. Around the bog loop for this one with extra bits added on to make up the time. Prefer loops to out and backs.
20 minute warm up including a few strides and then into the first 20 min 6:30 pace block. Pretty comfortable the whole way pretty much having to slow down in the last minute of each mile to meet the required pace. 6:29, 6:28 and 6:27 for these miles. 5 minute recovery and then into the 15 minute block. Again it was relatively comfortable and the miles came in at 6:28, 6:26 and 6:27 for the small bit. 20 minute cool down and that's another session down (relatively easy one I know!).

    Thursday 15th- 8 miles @ easy

Handy one around bog loop with a few strides thrown in just after the halfway point. Pretty unremarkable run, not a sinner out even though the sun was shining!

    Friday 16th- 1 hour @ 6:50 pace

Mrs CBG is working this weekend so brought the long run forward 2 hours to fit it in. Another lovely day out if a bit on the breezy side. 30 minute warm up with some strides in the last 5 mins and then into the 1 hour block. Took in the bog loop again and then hit up the old N5 and had it all to myself. Kept it reasonable consistent the whole way round, I'd say i had to slow down inside the last minute of each mile to bring paces back up towards 6:50, not a big slacking off in pace but just did it to try and keep the mile splits consistent.

Not been up the full length of the old N5 as it goes outside my 5k but that doesn't matter now. Almost missed the long drag towards the end of it. But what goes up must come down so the last 2 miles of the block were handy out.
30 minute cool down to finish with just over 16 miles for the day.

    Saturday 17th- 8 miles @ easy

6am start to this one to get it done before Mrs CBG headed off for work. Bit on the dark side so stuck the high viz on for safety but 10 minutes into the run I could have ditched it. Took in the same route as Monday which needless to say was ultra quiet!

    Sunday 18th- 8 miles @ easy

Another 6 am start but not as enticing out this morning. Dark, dreary and wet. Stuck on a long sleeve top but had to forego the rain jacket for fear of waking herself with be opening drawers in the dark!
Barely even a car out this morning and think I only seen activity in 1 house the whole way around! Glad I did it though as I know I would have regretted skipping it later in the day.

    Monday 19th- 8 miles @ easy
Just around the local Clonmore loops. Nothing too exciting or notable about it!

    Tuesday 20th- 2 x 20 mins @ 6:30

Another 5 minute progression from last weeks run. Back around the bog loop and Clonmore loop to make up the 1:25 total session time.
Passed over River Feorish to start into the bog loop, first fisherman of the season out today. Had to smile to myself passing his car, an 04 Avensis which had one of those anti theft bars on the steering wheel. A rural back road in Roscommon, ya would have been safe with the door left open and keys in the ignition!
Shortly afterwards I passed a couple of lads eating sambos out of the boot of their car, absolutely no idea what that was about as the car had passed me about 5 mins earlier on the main road. Almost had to do a double take to see if there was a behind closed doors inter county GAA game on!
Finished up the 20 minute warm up with the usual 5 x 20 second strides and then into the first 20 minute block. Of course i started way too fast as usual with the pace after a minute being in 5:30 territory! Settled into it afterwards but had to slow at the end of each mile to bring it back in line with target pace. Splits were 6:31 (Slowed too much going up a hill at the very end of this mile!), 6:26, 6:24, and 6:26 for small extra bit.
Stopped to tie a lace that had become undone halfway thru the previous 20 minute block but didn't want to stop and break stride and soon enough the 5 minute recovery was up.
Second 20 minute block was mostly into a bit of a headwind, nothing too strong though. Reasonably comfortable again with splits of 6:27, 6:26, 6:24, and 6:19 for the extra bit.
20 minute cool down to finish up with 8:00 pace barley feeling more than a fast walk!

    Thursday 22nd- 8 miles @ easy

Just a straight out and back on the main road heading west. Through in a few strides on the homeward journey just to mix things up.

    Friday 23rd- 8 miles @ easy

Another handy one around Clonmore loop with a bit extra added on to make up the extra time to get to 8 miles.

    Saturday 24th- 13+ miles with 40 mins @ 6:45

Beautiful morning for this one. Really warm and barely a ripple of wind out.
30 minute warm up in the bog loop again with strides thrown in during the last 6 minutes and then into it. Made a conscious effort to try and moderate the pace at the start instead of tearing into it and managed it reasonably well this time. First half of the run was grand, Second part a bit tougher but nothing major as the wind actually picked up. Splits were 6:42, 6:38 (day dreamed though the end of this one instead of slowing a bit!), 6:43, 6:42, 6:43, and 6:42.
30 minute cool down with the only issue being stinging eyes from a mix of sweat and sun cream, nice complaint to have!!

    Sunday 25th- 8 miles @ easy

Had my wife's 2 nieces (3 and 2) over for the previous day and sleep over so this was a nice mental recovery run more than a physical one!!
Headed east bound this time on the spur of the moment as heading into a strong headwind so knew I'd have it extra handy on the homebound journey.
4 miles brought me right bang up to Longford Town FC ground. Hopefully we might get into a game before the season is over!!

Well done to everyone that took part in the Boards 5k TT. Was great reading a series of "race" reports again.

Given that AMK ratted my log out, sections of it may now be heavily redacted :pac:

If AMK managed to rat your log, then you've done yourself no favours by saying "had to slow at the end of each mile to bring it back in line with target pace" or "Second part a bit tougher but nothing major as the wind actually picked up".

Cleverly though, you update your log after the training is issued :D

I really should have done a bit of proof reading, I also appeared to have redacted the wrong bits!

    Mon 26th- 8 miles @ easy

Lovely sunny morning out for a loop of the bog. 04 Avensis fisherman was back with his fort knox lock. First of the turf machines back in action too. Will probably be a thing of the past in the near future.

    Tues 27th - Session Day

Took the usual route around the bog and clonmore loop for this one. Usual warm up with strides towards the end and into the first 20 minute block at 6:30 pace. Bloody swirly wind out for this one which made it far from enjoyable. Must be reasonably consistent though as I've hit the exact same finish point for the warm up and 20 minute interval each of the last few weeks! Splits were 6:27, 6:29, and another 6:29.
5 minute recovery run into the wind and then into the 10 minute block at 6:25. Started off way too quick despite the head wind so was able to coast most of the last 400 metres of the first split to do it in 6:24. Same thing for the second split but annoyingly coasted a bit too much to finish it out and this split was 6:26.
3 minute recovery and then into the 2 5 minute intervals at 6:20 pace. These were much easier, more so mentally than anything. Ya feel like ya have barely started and ya already have a decent portion of it done by time you first look at the watch. It also helped that the wind played ball for these intervals and had it at my back. Splits were 6:17 and 6:19.
20 minute jog back home as a cool down afterwards. Noticeably tougher than last weeks session but still reasonably comfortable.

Thursday 29th- 8 miles @ easy with a few strides

Remember absolutely nothing about this one

    Friday 30th- 8 miles @ easy

Another one with no standout moment!

    Saturday 1st-60 mins @ 6:45 pace

My daughters stage school classes are now back in group sessions rather than over zoom so up early to get this run done.
Went to bed a lot later than planned the previous night thanks to Mark Slowby's antics in the snooker and took me ages to eventually fall asleep.
Headed into Longford town or rather around it for this one. Not done this route in a good 6 months I'd say.
Wasn't feeling the love the whole way through the 30 minute warm up and the first couple of miles felt a bit forced at the 6:45 pace. After that I caught sight of 3 runners ahead of me so reeling them in made things easier and even after passing them the rest of the miles in the 60 minutes felt grand. Splits were 6:44, 6:46, 6:42, 6:41, 6:43, 6:41, 6:43, 6:41, and 6:42.

Finished the day with 16.33 miles in the bag which is my longest run of 2021 to date.

    Sunday 2nd- 8 miles @ easy

Handy run around clonmore and then back into my village. Around the harbour to finish off and my stomach is rumbling from all the bbqs being prepared.
Make do with one of our home reared roast lamb dinners instead, Not bad!!

Yeah I'd be exact same S. Pains me to say it but I think he and not Ronnie will be the one to break Hendry's record of world titles.
This God's of Snooker short series starting on bbc2 next Sunday night looks essential viewing!

I check his activity every now and then alright. I read his last autobiography which funnily enough is called Running and is almost more about his love of running and doing 10k races than snooker!
I think his 10k PB is from about 10 years ago but he is training now to get back to that level.

    Mon 3rd- 8 miles @easy

Hard to believe that people were lighting up bbqs on my run yesterday. Horrible wet and windy morning. I waited out the worst of it and headed off after dropping the bins to the top of the road. Headed west into the wind along the N5 for the first half.
Got well soaked during the first couple of miles and just like that the rain stopped and the sun came out. Easy return journey with a strong wind behind me. My rain jacked was actually bone dry by time i got home!

    Tues 4th- Session

Another horrible morning out so waited it out a few hours and avoided the worst of it. Usual warm up and strides before the first 20 minute at 6:30 pace block. First mile was grand after the customary fast start but with the wind blowing strongly side on i knew the next 2 miles would be tough along the open bog road once i turned 90 degrees into it. So it proved to be and effort levels had to ratchet up to keep target pace but the splits came in at 6:28. 6:27 and 6:25. Very tempting to just do a 180 halfway thru to make it handy but would only be kidding myself.
5 minute recovery run and then into the 4 x 5 minute intervals at 6:20 pace. First 2 were fine with the wind now side on again. 3rd one was handy with the majority of it assisted by tailwind. Fourth had to up effort again with a headwind but was well sheltered this time so not too bad. Splits were 6:18, 6:19, 6:18, and 6:17.
20 minute cool down to finish during which my luck with the scattered rain showers finally ran out and i got well drenched!

    Thurs & Friday- 8 miles @easy

Same route around the bog for these. Day dreamed through the Thursday run and forgot about the strides to be done at the halfway point so ended up doing them in the last mile before i got back to the car.

    Sat 8th- 40 min @ 6:40 pace

Pretty much the same route as Tuesday's session but only a light wind to deal with this time. Reasonably comfortable for the 40 minutes, just had to slow it towards the end of each mile. Splits were 6:39, 6:37, 6:40, 6:38, 6:37, and 6:36. One of my toenails was bit sore whole way around from cutting it a bit tight so ended up having an ingrown effect but its fine today thankfully.

    Sun 9th- 8 miles @easy

2 county and 2 province easy run around. 4 seasons in the 1 hour during this run! Unreal weather. The gritter was actually out one night here, its bloody May like!

    Monday 10th - 8 miles @ easy

On a training course on zoom all week with people from all over the Europe and Asia. The stuff involved only makes up about 2% of the work I do so was heavy going so great to get out afterwards each day to detox the head!
Just a handy multi loop around Clonmore and back around the locks in the village.

    Tuesday 11th- 8 x 5 mins @6:00

The plan was for 6:20 pace but the guideline is that Tuesday sessions can be done a bit quicker. The quintessential question, how much is a bit!
Around the bog again starting at the usual farm gate after a 20 minute warm up and strides. Had intended to go for 6:10 pace but decided to run the first one without looking at the watch. This one was into the wind and finished going up a hill so probably pushed it a bit too much and it came in at 5:58. Decided to try and stick at 6:00 pace for next 7 intervals and see how I got on.

Next 2 with the wind were grand, both at 5:58. Fourth one was back into the wind so tough enough going and it also came in at 5:58 so "now we're sucking diesel" (only starting watch LoD last month on the RTE player after hearing the hype. Finished ep 2 of season 6 last night on BBC iplayer. Have managed to avoid all spoilers even walking out of the room for the bits on Gogglebox!!).

Fifth one is kinda with the wind to the side back through the bog...5:59. Last 3 will either be with or against the wind depending on me turning left or right at a T junction at the end of this road. Decide to mix it up on the old main road and just run half of each split in either direction to level things out. 5:59 for the 6th rep. Glad to say my lace opened during this one so paused watch at the end of it to fix it and enjoyed the extra 20 seconds of recovery!
5:59 for the 7th and finished bang on 6:00 for the last rep and walked this last 3 minute recovery before heading home via a 20 minute cool down.
Deceivingly warm out today so was absolutely parched during this cool down.

Thursday 13th- Just a handy out and back 8 miles along the old main road with 5 x 20 second strides thrown in on the way home. First half was very heavy legged but the strides seemed to ease things out and was comfortable getting home.

    Friday 14th- 50 mins @6:40

Mrs CBG was working nights this weekend so brought the long run forward by a day to fit things in.
Headed into Longford town and out around the bypass. Usual 30 minute warm up with strides but still had that heavy type feeling in the legs. I always find the first couple of miles the hardest for whatever reason! First 4 miles come in at 6:38, and then 3 x 6:37. Next mile back in a back road that goes past Pearse park and Longford rugby club is the toughest of the entire route as it takes in 2 short but quite sharp inclines. Push these bits out to keep on pace and actually manage to speed up this split instead of having lost time so that was nice to be able to coast the last minute of this one and come in at 6:37.
Back along the N5 again homeward bound and feeling great now so these ones are handy enough all coming in again at 6:37.
30 minute cool down brings the trip to just over 15 miles.

    Sat & Sunday- 8 miles @ easy

Just handy jaunts around the locality. Today's run was a lot easier than yesterdays! Spent most of it thinking ahead of the slaughtering The Dubs could give us in the football later. Sad to say that I was happy enough with a 9 point defeat even with Dublin rarely even going into 2nd gear. Ros were well short of top gear themselves but the gap in quality is stark.
Pool's win capped things off  In fairness ya would have to be happy for Alisson after the year he endured. Some header too.

Just over 61 miles for the week and into a step back week now :)

Step back week so lots of easy runs on the menu.

Handy trips around the locality on Monday and Tuesday. Was in the office on Thursday so headed out at lunchtime just for a change of scenery. Didn't get to see much as the heavens opened and stayed open for duration of this one!

Brought the long run forward a day to Friday as Mrs CBG was working this weekend.
60 minutes at 6:40 pace was the order of the day.
No rain today but it was really windy and bloody cold, so much so that I reverted to long sleeves for first time in ages. Bloody hell, its mid May! This time last year the bbq was out most evenings.

The usual 30 minute warm up with some strides before starting the faster stuff not far away from Longford Town FC. First mile was grand with the aid of a tailwind 6:40. Turned onto the bypass shortly after this and despite it only being something like a 20 degree change in direction the wind is now a full on headwind. These couple of miles ain't easy but I don't fancy trying to maintain a steady effort instead of focusing on the watch as I'm crap at judging stuff like that. These couple of miles both come in at 6:38. Next mile is mainly on a winding back road that eventually links to the N4. Wind is a bit swirly for the next couple of miles and splits come in at 6:37 and 6:39.
Back along the bypass now again so have a decent tailwind again and these are the easiest couple of miles of the trip at 6:35 and 6:37.
Same as the incoming trip once I get off the bypass and am back on the N5 hard shoulder heading home the wind has somehow turned and is a full on head wind again. Its not a strong one though so finish out the session with splits of 6:37 and 6:38.
30 minute cool down brings me back home with just over 16.5 miles for the day.

Another easy 8 miles yesterday and again early this morning where once again I got drowned where I wouldn't have been much wetter if I had jumped into the Shannon which I ran beside during the last mile home!!

Mon 24th- 8 handy miles around the locality.

    Tues 25th- 10 x 4 mins @5:55 pace (3 min rec.)

Last time out on Tuesday's session it was 8 x 5 mins @6:00 pace. Amazing the difference the minute less makes as this session felt so much easier.
Usual route around the bog loop with a few extra out and back bits added in.
Started each interval too fast and was usually 6-10 seconds ahead of schedule around the 2 minute mark so might push next weeks pace up a bit for the coming weeks 3 minute intervals.
Setting out the sky didn't look too inviting but didn't bring my rain jacket as it acts like a parachute when the wind picks up! Got away with it for most of the run but the heavens opened during the recovery after the 8th interval and continued until I was just about finishing up the recovery for the 9th interval so got drenched over the course of almost 10 minutes!
For the last interval my t shirt was stuck to me and was almost like one of those weighted vests!
    Splits for the 4 minute intervals were 5:55, 5:55, 5:53, 5:54, 5:55, 5:55, 5:52, 5:54, 5:54, 5:52.

Went thru 1000 miles early in this one.

    Thurs 27th- 8 easy miles

Brought my gear to work but missed going out at lunch time thanks to some procrastination. Paid the price later doing it around the bog loop, I wasn't ditching the rain jacket for this one! Threw in 5 sets of 20 second strides at the halfway point. Got well drowned again which didn't go well with the Utd result the previous night

Fri 28th- Another easy 8 miles around local loops.

    Sat 29th- 40 mins @ 6:35/mile

Headed out just before 11 am for this one. Beautiful morning out of nowhere but made a mistake wearing a black t shirt in that sunshine!
Usual 30 minute warm up and strides around the bog loop before starting into the faster stuff. Sweated buckets during the next 40 minutes! Most of the splits came in slightly quick but better that than the other way!
Had to amend my route just before mile 5 as heavy traffic on main road meant i couldn't cross in time to access the road on my planned route but no big deal. Splits were 6:33, 6:29, 6:31, 6:32, 6:31 and 6:26.
Last cool down mile was partially along the Shannon, would have been lovely to jump in! Fair play to healy1835 banging out a sub 80 minute HM
    TT in that heat

BBQ that evening and my first alcoholic beverages in what seemed like an age. No love for Chelsea but delighted they won. Have been totally ambivalent to City's success over the past decade but for whatever reason they and more particularly Pep have really annoyed me this season. Hilarious seeing him overthinking a big European game yet again. It's almost as if he has to go out of his way to show everyone he's a tactical genius rather than being a tactical genius.

    Sun 30th- 8 easy miles

No mistake with clothing today! First time this year wearing a singlet. Lovely day out for an easy paced run.

Mon 31st- 8 easy miles around home. Don't remember a thing about this one but Strava said I did it!

    Tues 1st- Session Day

Last weeks 4 min intervals at 5:55 went well so skipped forward a bit this week and lowered the 5:50 pace for the 10 x 3 minute intervals to 5:40 pace instead.
Bloody warm out for this one so stuck on a singlet.
Usual warm up and strides for 20 minutes but even during these I knew I should have taken more water on board (rookie mistake).
Not sure what it was but most of these intervals felt like the slight breeze out was against me which annoyed me no end.
First couple of intervals done and already my eyes are stinging from that toxic mix of sweat and sun cream! My singlet is soaked thru (Not OOnegative level but bad for me!) and my mouth is parched. Manage to bang out the required splits but revert to walking for a minute or 2 of the 3 minute recoveries from the 7th one on.
    Splits come in at 5:35, 5:38, 5:40, 5:39, 5:39, 5:38, 5:40, 5:39, 5:40 and 5:41
Slow cool down home and just over half marathon distance for the run.

Thurs 3rd- 8 miles at easy with a few strides
Did this one during lunch break at the office. Much nicer day than the last time I ran here!

    Fri 4th- 50 mins @ 6:35

Mrs is working this weekend so brought this one forward 24 hours.
Serious warm day out again (great complaint to have in fairness). Thinking back on it I really should have left a bottle of water somewhere out on the loop.
Took the bog loop again knowing the 50 minute session plus the warm up would bring me close to our village after adding in the clonmore loop and i could just take it handy going around Clondra as a cool down.
30 minute warm up seemed to pass in no time mostly because I spent most of it ruminating on coaching the u11 local GAA team the previous evening. Well I say coaching but it was more like babysitting this particular evening as they have the attention spans of a goldfish .
Really quiet out around the loop but the mile beeps don't be long coming around. Sweating buckets again and really feeling parched halfway thru. Pass the kids national school at one point and see my eldest out playing on his break so give him a shout and a wave :pac:
Finish up the 50 minute block with the village in sight as planned with splits of
    6:35, 6:34, 6:35, 6:31, 6:33, 6:33, 6:31, and 6:34.
Cool down around Clondra taking the opportunity to walk for a couple of minutes of it to mop my brow so to speak! 15 miles for the day.

    Sat 5th & Sun 6th

8 easy miles both mornings. 6am starts both days to be back before Mrs left for work. Grey and raining yesterday but Glorious sunshine this morning, this country and its weather!

    Mon 7th- 8 miles @easy

Bank holiday run around in beautiful sunshine. Most notable feature was that it was the first time running with a baseball hat. Not to protect my head from the sun but to hide a haircut gone bad!
Decided to shave the head before going out for the run, blade 1 all over job. Just finished both sides around the temples when the battery went :pac:
Said I'd get the run out of the way instead of waiting around for it to charge up. Missus said i had the head of one of those lads off kids programme The Body Brothers!

    Tues 8th- 10 x 2 minutes at 5:35

Bank holiday take away and a few home beers didn't have me in 100% shape for this one!
Usual trip around the bog loop for this one. Breezy out again which made the effort levels go up or down for the intervals depending on which direction I was heading. Usual mistake of pushing it too hard from the start of each set meaning i was ahead of schedule at halfway point for each and had to reign it in a bit but it kinda extended the 2 minute recoveries so not all bad!
    Splits were 5:28, 5:31, 5:33, 5:31, 5:31, 5:33, 5:35, 5:3, 5:32, 5:28, walked for a minute for each of the last 3 sets of recoveries.
Finished just under 11 miles for the session which i thought was a bit on the short side compared to previous weeks but thought nothing more of it.
Coached messaged me on Thursday wondering why i didn't do the 15 sets :o
Flip sake i had it in my head for whatever reason that it was 10!
Think I'll repeat this session properly next Tuesday instead of moving on.

Thurs 10th- 8 miles at easy with a few strides

Usual Thursday run about but did this one at lunch time at the office. Spent a couple of minutes of it pinching my nose as i got a small nosebleed. Just like the last one i got while out running months ago I just had to be wearing a plain white t-shirt!

    Fri 11th- 8 easy miles

Jaunt up the canal from Clondra and home again for this one. Very muggy out so sweating buckets despite the relaxed paces. Still haven't got plagued with the few head wrecking flies following me for miles on end this year yet though!

Decent start for Italy in the Euros. I always support them in tournaments. Wouldn't have the star power of previous sides but look a well drilled side.

    Sat 12th- 60 minutes @6:35

Another 10 minutes added to last weeks long run. Not sunny out but really warm again so donned the singlet.
Usual 30 minute warm up and strides before getting going.
First couple of miles at the required pace always feel the trickiest and more of the same today but headwind didn't help. Took in an additional loop today just for some variation. Dying for a drink early into the 60 minute session and could kinda feel that boink feeling towards the end of it but got the splits done: 6:35, 6:33, 6:33, 6:35, 6:31, 6:34, 6:33, 6:32, 6:32, and 6:25 for the small bit extra at the end.
Spent the 30 minute cool down walking for small section before running for a bit, massive hole in my stomach at this stage so another lesson learned on pre run nutrition and hydration. From now on I'll be hiding a bottle of water on the loop for these 2 hour runs.

Sun 13th- 8 miles easy around the silage fields behind our house which we baled up yesterday. Missus was on nights so in bed so this allowed me to get the run in while also keeping an eye on the kids who were playing in the fields and trying to occasionally join me!

As B says, you look to be in cracking shape. Great to see. Are you working towards something in particular?

I'd always wear a baseball cap running. Avoids the suncream running into the eyes on days like today, and helps with the rain other days.

Italy looked decent the other night. Nice combination of defensive know how and some quality at the other end. Great to see a positive outcome for Christian Eriksen yesterday in Copenhagen.
