Having never owned an electric car or an m/rs/amg car I might be wrong but I can see the likes of mark's last 2 cars representing the future and past of performance premium motoring...Will the likes of the Etron GT and whatever bmw and merc release in the segment cannibalise the likes of m3, m5, rs4, rs6, c63 etc?
It undercuts m3 by 25000 which is huge

I think you are right but the m cars will become the high end of what electricity can do in a car.
At the minute, it is harder thsn ever to stomach the 2400 tax when electric / hybrid offers another route to a quick car.

There’s two thoughts on it. You’ll either appreciate the performance of a fast Tesla or etron GT etc and enjoy them for the brilliant performance they offer or you’ll be in the camp that will desperately miss something like what the M3 offers. I’ve been fortunate to drive both of them in the space of a week and they both offer incredible fun, just in a different way. The occasion of being behind the wheel of the BMW is undoubtably more of a thing but when very similar performance albeit without a gorgeous straight six can be achieved in an EV, it is somewhat ignorant to dismiss them (not saying anyone in this thread is dismissing them btw). Performance EVs won’t be able to replicate a highly strung engine firing up first thing on a cold morning that’s for sure.

When I go for a good drive I turn the radio off and open the window to hear the car. The sound is an important part of the drive too.

The next Mercedes c63 amg is going to be a 2.0 four cylinder petrol hybrid apparently.
Who knows, the generation after that may well be all electric?
Definitely the days of large petrol or Diesel engined cars are numbered it would appear.

Watched the Toyota Highlander review Mark.
Great job as always and you were very diplomatic.
You’d want to be mad to drop 70 or 80 k on that. The fisher price central screen and buttons is a joke for a start. Car is good enough no doubt but over priced. Surely it should be 60k to compete with the up spec Kia sorrento?

that wont last too long either, grants on the way out, watch the vrt rates increase.

I done a deal on an X5 45e this week for that very reason, with the €5k SEAI grant going at the end of June, I figured the 7% VRT will go next.

My man maths is making some optimistic assumptions that this will not lose as much as some other BMWs will do. The €5k SEAI makes it more expensive for someone in July and as we are saying I won't be surprised to see them put the VRT back to 14% again for cars over a certain price. So if that happens the car is around €12k more expensive straight away.

They will probably start increasing VRT with the price of the cars, rather than the old model of increasing it with the co2 levels.

7 year warranty and a K4 spec for €55,000 versus €75,000 for that. Both cars available in the US. But, the Highlander is less than 40 thousand dollars as far as I know. The Greens have yet again been allowed to well and truly ride the motorist.

I have similar hopes with my 330e. It loses the 5k grant in July and I’m hoping that plus lack of cheap imports from the U.K. will help residuals. The x5 we bought last year is 20k more expensive this year thanks to the greens increase of vrt which should help in keeping value there too.
They are pricing anything nice that is non electric or hybrid out of the market.
What spec you going for? Did you get a decent deal?
You have an id4 on by order too. Still going with that?

No contest price wise and from watching your reviews I thought the Kia was the nicer car.

Yeah lads I think you'll do well with value retention over next few years on those cars. Insulated from a years drop at least compared to normal times.

Went for a pretty decent spec, all the packs, merino leather, 22" wheels with red calipers. Can't wait!

Didn't go with the sunroof, just couldn't really justify the €3k for it.

There is some issue with the ID4 order at the minute, I went for the 1st Max and they can't get it now, dealer trying to source something else. If he doesn't get his act together this week I might cancel it as, etron q4 looks really nice I think which is turning my head a bit!

Rang quite a few dealers, they are all saying there is huge demand on them and they can't get enough stock with the grant going so very hard to get much of it.

Great spec. The red brake calipers are what people comment about with my car when they see it.
A woman in the street asked me what they were for last week..
The pan roof is great in the x5 but is pricey. Lights up at night and makes cabin very airy. Wife loves it.
Some nice metal on this thread.

I hope ye are right lads but rarely works out that way and even if it does whatever you replace it with has also gone up most likely , very hard win at this game :D

I remember getting a new 330d back in January 2013 and I think you got one at the same time crowded house?
What are you coming from now into the 330d?
Best of luck with the collection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,012 ✭✭✭CrowdedHouse

Thanks man, that's right I got one then.

Coming from a 181 X3 2.0d mSport, would have happily got another but the VRT changes have driven the prices crazy.

I bought CH's one from Colm Quinn in September 2015 when he got his 430d.

    So 330d,430d, x3 20d and full circle to 330d?

How are you enjoying the m4 that you replaced the 330d with?

I think I seen this X3 M Competition in Conlan's showroom last year or one very like it:

Yeah I saw it too unless there’s a few knocking around which I doubt.
    Wouldn’t be for me.

I was walking down the street this evening and a brand new X5 45e in white passed me coming to a stop, big 22-23ish factory alloys on it. I have to say I was massively impressed by it and I don't normally give SUVs a second look; frankly i find newer RRs ugly and distastetful.

The X5 was in full electric mode and the noise it made coming to a halt was fantastic. Very imposing vehicle, looked a million dollars, best of luck with it when it arrives.

Great review Mark. Would you put it ahead of the M5 in terms of what you get for the price?

Nice to see Joe achiles in the comments too.

    Well done

Super review Mark and a lovely car.
Great to see you're popping up in Joe Achille's you tube feed.

It really is such a shame we can't access cars like this in Ireland without a lotto win. 146,000 is almost two and a half times what I paid for a well specced 330e, laser lights and all. In the UK the M3 is about 50% more expensive than my car.
    Some difference.

And once they achieve that, they'll come up with some other creative way to screw the motorist
