People are arriving with negative PCR's and still sent for a 2 week detainment in a hotel at their expense, no logic to this governments methods.

I feel that someone in Government was duped by the Zero Covid lobby who managed to push through MHQ 52 weeks after it would have made any impact...

Even in Australia where they've had a strict MHQ it's meant that 10's of thousand of its citizens are stranded abroad and an entire nation confined to its own borders...and they probably won't reopen the country even with everyone vaccinated... is that what those screaming for closed borders and confine everyone in Ireland want? Indefinite closure of the country?

A case of small country syndrome here. How people expect the country to survive with closed borders the way Australia can is beyond me. These people must all be on the dole or retired.

Mr Harris said the legislation around the mandatory hotel quarantine lapses after three months so it is possible students returning in August or September may return to a “very different scenario”.

Interesting comment from Simon Harris, along with his comments about the rules changing for those already vaccinated.

Plenty of Fine Gaelers hurling from the ditch. But it is not good enough. They are part of the government and SH is a minister so they are just as responsible for this fiasco as FF and the Greens.

100% correct. FF are certainly not helping themselves by leaving the door wide open for FG to contradict them. There is an urgent need for the government to get their communications under control. Individuals within FF, and NPHET are running around making statements with zero regard. Of course FG are going to take advantage of the mayhem to try and score points. SD is definately the worst offender, and from what came out yesterday in the media, his main goal seems to be getting more twitter mentions. Outside of the government we also have the issue of anyone with any sort of medical qualification being allowed to give their 2 cents in the media. An utter disaster.

Had to laugh at that. It’s so true. If MHQ was implemented 12 months ago there wouldn’t be a peep out of anyone as we hadn’t a clue what this virus was capable of doing to any age cohort as such was the fear back then.
    NOW ???
    What the hell. ?
We know it’s not the drop dead any age virus that was wrapped up in a bow and shoved down our throats via Italian and particularly Chinese propaganda media.

My brother went to Thailand last month to visit his Thai wife and kid after 15 months of absence.

He did 14 days Thai MHQ which is now since April reduced to 10 days MHQ. By July it’ll be 7 days MHQ. (Vaccinated travellers NO MHQ if going to Phuket from July)
They are unwinding their very severe entrance requirements and testing the reopening of their country as now deemed safe with vaccine volumes in their population. ie weighing up the pros and cons of continuing MHQ.

Here ? We are going backwards and have no plan.
    It’s very worrying

I just wish “SD” had a different set of initials. Like in Chuck’s post above, talking about FF, FG etc, then I think it’s Social Democrats for SD. It gets me every single time. :D

Brilliant news. Hopefully these cases keep coming and coming and the High Court rules that the State has got to stop locking away healthy citizens with clear PCR tests travelling for essential reasons.

Hopefully there is clarity and any new laws necessary are enacted rapidly.

    Im fixing this post -
anyone with any sort of medical qualification THAT DOESNT GO AGAINST NPHETS OPINION being allowed to give their 2 cents in the media

We very rarely see a medical professional with a differing opinion given any air time. And anyone that did has been quietened down very quickly.

Theres no balance in the media at all. Its all one sided reporting.

Their options are limited I would have thought.

Seen as they have gone down this rabbit hole I wouldn't be at all surprised if they start limiting the number of incoming flights. The nuclear option

They can’t for EU citizens. It’s one thing having MHQ in operation on health grounds. But preventing entry of Irish and EU citizens due to capacity issues is a breach of EU citizen rights.

I wonder is this the beginning of the end for MHQ at least for Irish citizens and EU states. Due to the volume of successful and pending challenges, have they taken it offline to prevent further embarrassment?

That would be too easy. Could they really cope with the embarrassment of admitting the system can’t cope.

Nope they can't be seen to be giving in so easy. They will need to be seen to hold out a bit longer.

It's crazy how they have been bounced into this, more so by the media than even NHPET who they have been known to ignore any way.

I really do wonder what got into them to pull the trigger now and not at anytime over the past 13 months

So. There it is. Next step to limit entry of Irish citizens to their own country. Jesus

Plenty of FG will be happy about this de facto quota I’d say

Im sure there are ways to put them up. My island idea is looking better.

    Where did you get that?

They havent been able to establish a functioning contact tracing system in 12 months, how could they be expected to set up a functioning MHQ system in 4 weeks...?! Unbelievable level of incompetence by this country's "leadership"

Court challenges, online petitions, limited capacity... got myself some popcorn, a comfy seat and watching this slow motion car crash happening right before my eyes

If they run out of hotel rooms and an Irish citizens wants to come home from France, then they can’t, obviously.

Another individual released from MHQ, as HC directs inquiry into legality of her detention.

    https://twitter.com/Orlaodo/status/1382028624610652162?s=20

This is reminiscent of the Trump border job (minus inhumane treatment of children and guardians) the difference being individuals are having to make highly personal information public to get out.

This populist miss-informed ISAG headball strategy will cost the Gov a lot of money.

Yes you can. Holy **** how many times does this need to be explained?

Freedom of movement does not come without conditions or allowances. Countries can close their borders. IRELAND, the country we live in, retained its external borders.
