Because they are in bubbles, tester constantly, and subject to strict covid protocols. Whether you like it or not, their risk profile while travelling around is much lower than the rest of us. They are different and should be treated as such

There have been covid clusters in every single rugby team of the top14 in France, even French national team which was using a bubble, and they will be in direct contact with 23 French Rugby player. How is it safer?

But I don't care if I like it or not. The EU commission website states that people with essential functions can skip the quarantine if a quarantine is in place in one of the EU state. That is why truck drivers or other medical staff can skip it. And it is written that the quarantine cannot be discriminatory. So on what ground a rugby team can be allowed to skip it in Ireland? It will fire back with every single person going to court to avoid the quarantine.

Sadly if they pull the plug on the coalition it’ll trigger a GE no doubt.
What and who are the alternatives to vote in to replace this inept present government? FG would not get an overall majority realistically.

The opposition support zero covid looney ideals and want every country on the mhq.

It’d jumping out the frying pan into the fire

Im with you - we honestly dont have an opposition thats of any great use.

So we put up with what we have for another 3 years? FG supported by enough Independents would probably be the lesser of a bad bunch.
We cant ever let Sinn Fein into government - God help us if we do (BTW I voted them my number 2 in the last GE - but after this **** show they wont be getting a number 10)

So for the next GE Im predicting that

    FF - are ****ed
    FG - Less ****ed
Greens - Gone back to Hippy Land
Sinn Fein - Less ****ed than the rest of them!!
Independents - probably gain a few seats.

In Australia they quarantined all the tennis players for the Aussie Open. No exceptions. That is what quarantine involves.

Meanwhile in Ireland we are heading for a discriminatory MHQ system with a leaky border in NI. Total farce and ultimately not good for public health because it will undermine reasonable COVID restrictions that do have public support.

Posted a reply I got from a FF TD over the weekend.

A FG TD has also replied, now not in my constituency but I'm living close the border of a few electoral areas so emailed those in the locality.

    Anyway his reply,

"I fully agree, I have consistently voiced my opposition to MHQ within the party and again last week on the Tonight Show with regard to the then possibility of adding EU Member States.

I struggle to see how the benefits outweigh the very clear costs but there has been a populist campaign to bring this in regardless of the medium term damage as well as the glaring holes when it comes to actual implementation; this is of course before coming to the obvious humanitarian issues that have already been thrown up and the inability to provide for those who have been fully vaccinated."

Thank goodness there is some common sense out there from many of the TDs. He is exactly right, we all probably underestimated the size of the populist zero covid antitravel insular looney campaign that’s been ongoing last couple months. Can only hope enough pressure cones on Donnelly and MM in the next week or so to get him do an about-turn. Problem is they’ll be too arrogant to want to admit how stupid it was to add US and EU countries.

Not happening unless we get a court case to push it. Or everyone just walks out.

No harm in the bit of entertainment ;)

I was 100% convinced you are a WUM and to be fair you are succeeding in annoying pretty much everyone on the thread. You are effectively admitting it here. :)

I’d be congratulating you if the risks weren’t so serious to Irish economy, aviation/tourism sectors, international reputation and stripping of our fundamental rights but by bit.

I think independents will gain a lot - it’s the only form of protest vote available. The last few elections my choice has been either don’t vote, or go for independents whose policies I don’t even like. I start at the bottom of the voting card and make my way reluctantly to the top. If there was a box for ‘drag them all out the the dail and take away their pensions’ I’d happily vote for that.

It all has to be refreshed by 9th June, otherwise it falls away. I’m hoping that FG are keeping their powder dry until then, when the vaccination status of many countries will make the MHQ difficult to defend

It is easy to see how the tolerance of Pedophile Priests, abusive institutions and all the horribleness that happened in Ireland before happened when you look at the collective absolute moronic herd mentality we are seeing now treating travel as if they were infected zombies. I have a friend who is a teacher and he maintains a surprisingly large percentage of Ireland are very close to illiterate and incredibly stupid.

Irish people can't help but stick their noses in where it is not wanted or needed, mind their own bloody business and who cares if a plane comes in from Botswana, Brazil or Bangladesh.

Your teaching friend may have a valid point....touched on by this piece from the (UK) Times.

    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/irelands-graduates-shrug-off-outbreak-with-degree-boost-fv0m7rvd2

It may require a free trial for the entire article, but the gist is of a significant increase in Degree Inflation post Covid...
Across the seven universities, almost three out of four students (73 per cent) obtained a top degree in 2020, up from 68 per cent in 2019, according to figures from the Irish Universities Association.

Or,could it be that Covid actually increases your intelligence ?

2022 I think. One of the holy trinity of Ryan, Staines and McConkey said 18 months last week. At least of full belt and braces MHQ (for everyone from everywhere, NZ style)

I think it's a bit up in the air, the Shinners would win in the morning from the point of view of COVID but our next GE is unlikely to be before 2025 and by then the pandemic will be long forgotten with travel back to regular service

I think I've finally figured out Donnelly's crusade with MHQ, he's trying to get more twitter mentions. I would imagine that NPHET members are at the same thing. Strangely he was in the media only days ago complaining about all the mentions in social media. I think he secretly wants to be an instahun.

Obscene if this is the case. MHQ for the little people but not if you are an elite sportsperson or a politician.

So not exemption for a funeral but ok for a golf tournament?

As we already know MHQ is just theatre. This further confirms it.

Has anyone got a link to a reputable source of all the current variants and their origins? I'd be interested in comparing this to the MHQ list as all the talk seems to be about variants? For example Italy. I haven't heard of any variant there, I assume they are on the list due to their high numbers?

    Thats all I can find.

Seems to be only 3 listed.

    The last page is interesting.

    Thanks. The CDC list another one in California, same characteristics as the others, but a far lower suspected increase in transmission (+20%). Interestingly they have a number have 3 ways of defining variants;
    Variants of interest
Variants of concern (beloved by the Irish)
Variants of high consequence - none of these exist.

A variant of high consequence has clear evidence that prevention measures or medical countermeasures (MCMs) have significantly reduced effectiveness relative to previously circulating variants.

What is also interesting is that they, along with other groups list the country of first detection as Brazil/Japan for the Brazilian variant. Why is Japan not on the MHQ list??

I also can't help wondering if all these variants started in Ireland? The UK one could have come from, say, Rathkeale, the Brazilian one could have come from Gort etc (not sure about the SA). We could be blaming the rest of the world for something that started here. And is no one concerned that we may have an Offaly variant?

Its worrying that we can introduce MHQ without any REAL reasons for doing so when other countries dont seem so concerned with the variants or have let them have any effect in reopening their countries - maybe those other countries will be proven wrong but I feel its Ireland thats in the wrong here.

The reason I pointed out the last page is that basically one of the variants has no effect on the vaccine rollout , the other one has a reduced effectiveness and the 3rd they have no information on.

So we are locked down due to complete uncertainty regarding what the variants can or can not do - this leaves them technically able to leave MHQ in place forever and ever and ever and ever!!!!!

Yet iF you are an "elite" athlete these variants dont affect you, similar to the virus not liking 9.00 euro meals!!!!

Its a joke at this stage - the UK are pissing themselves laughing at us today while our Minister for Health is more worried about how many ****ing tweets hes mentioned in - maybe if he didnt block half of twitter users he`d get mentioned more.

You have 2 court cases dropped today because he knows if these go to court for constitutional challenge his MHQ is out the window and probably him and Micheal with it.

Perhaps they want to keep the peasants in fear? It must be all just a huge smoke screen to distract attention away from the vaccination programme, a lot of which they really cannot be blamed for in the first place, as we have supply issues. But I think it's mainly aimed at appeasing the moaners in society. Unfortunately social media has given a voice to the kind of people that could do without one. Remember the days when you could just move further down the bar to escape someone talking s##t. :pac:

There’s little doubt about it I’d say. The average Irish IQ was just 96 a few years ago. Average, as in half of the population were even lower than that. I think this manifests itself very clearly at all levels of society. The Irish media and politicians, and many Irish public intellectuals, observably do not have the piercing intelligence that you see in other countries. It is obvious too in the pervasive drunkenness, tribalism and in the lavatorial sense of humor that so many Irish people enjoy. Probably due to centuries of brain drain; unfortunately this will be exacerbated in the years ahead as the damage to the Irish economy plays itself out.
