A band that has transcended time and space, that has given the world some of the most instantly recognisable and memorable songs, no other group can compare to The Beatles. They were only really active for around a 10 year period and released a staggering 12 studio albums in approximately 8 years which is modern terms is absolutely amazing. The fact that these releases were bookended by non stop touring make their output all the more impressive.

    By the numbers

Approx 600,000,000 albums sold, the biggest selling artist of all time.

Approx 2,700 different cover versions of their songs have been released / recorded, by comparison, the nearest competitor is Bob Dylan with around 600 covers.

Approx 1,600,000,000 singles sold in the US alone.

For the purposes of this tournament, I have only included original recorded songs that appeared on their 12 original studio albums. We have 184 tracks to pick from.

Round 1 will commence later this week and consists of 92, 1 vs 1 legs. Ive made the drawing already so when things commence, I will post a link to each song (Youtube or Spotify) and Boardsies pick which ever song they prefer.

Voting will be valid for a 24 hour period from the time of the post and if any votes are cast after the 24 hours have elapsed they will not be counted so if you want to get involved please get your vote in early.

In the event there is a tie, I will cast the deciding vote to break the deadlock.

So sit back, relax and get ready to enjoy some of the best music ever recorded.

In the short term, have a view of this, something I am ridiculously excited about.

    Let Beatlemania sweep through Boards!!!!

There is one that I think will be top pick overall, depends on how the drawings go but there are a couple of heavy hitters paired together in round 1. Should be a bit of craic for a couple of weeks anyway!

Hold on though, only songs from the albums?

That means nothing that was released as a single that didn't make any album?

    Such as:

    Love Me Do
    Strawberry Fields Forever
I Want to Hold Your Hand
    Lady Madonna
    Rain
    Hey Jude
    Get Back
    Old Brown Shoe
    Hey Bulldog

    etc, etc.

They appeared on an album didn't they!!!

For the avoidance of doubt, all original recordings ie written and performed by the band are included, including singles and their b-sides.

Can't wait to get stuck in. Fair play for running this.

The Beatles had two genius song writers (John and Paul), but three extremely talented song writers (John, Paul and George). Sorry - Ringo! George's contributions were particularly noticeable in the late sixties. Frank Sinatra said his favourite Lennon-McCartney song was Something, which was written by George!

As singers, all four could sing. I know Ringo is somewhat overlooked, but he had some good vocal performances. There are certain songs associated with him, but my favourite is Goodnight from The White Album.

    Favourite Beatle - John
Second Favourite Beatle - George - :D;) - shock, horror!
    Third Favourite Beatle - Paul
    Sorry - Ringo!

I did not know that! Cheers.

It's another string to their bow. On top of all the brilliant and groundbreaking albums, they were also simultaneously throwing out singles of unbelievable quality.

Sure, if we're going to do it, rating the lads:

I am a total John man, he's easily number one for me.
Then, I'd have to give it to Paul, just for pure quantity of quality.
George would be third, but some of his best tunes are pretty damn serious.
And Ringo is the lovable drummer and Octopuses Garden is a lovely song.

John came up with some extraordinary songs like Tomorrow Never Knows, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and A Day in The Life (most of the song - I know Paul wrote the middle section!).

this looks like it's gonna be an interesting one because while I know the hype The Beatles have created, I'm only a spring chick* so I couldn't name many of their songs myself.

It'll be interesting to see how many I do know as they are posted. or how many I'll learn from the tournament. looking forward to it :)

It's funny, I've listened to them for years but it was always through anthologies rather than specific albums and since the advent of Spotify its been exclusively streaming. I turned 40 a couple of years ago so as a present from me to me I bought their "in stereo" vinyl boxset despite not owning a record player, I still don't own one either but am currently planning a house build which will include an office / man cave so all going well I'll get one before the end of next year and give them all a spin. Glad I now know that some of my favourites may be absent and that it's not because I bought a bogey product!

    As for my favourite Beatle.

I tend to flip flop between John and Paul. John imo was the more talented but I was lucky enough to see Paul perform in Glasgow a couple of years back so would have him marginally ahead based on recency bias.

    Paul
    John
    George
    Ringo

I wouldn't quite go that far myself, but I would say that John kept Paul in check when writing songs, stopping Paul from descending into sentimentality or cloying sweetness. That was clearly missing in much of Paul's solo offerings, although he was still capable at times of coming with some good songs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,626 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

It's an age old debate really. Paul was the most musically talented and all, but John has that grit and honesty. But I eagerly await getting my prior opinions challenged.

That's why they worked so well together. Paul had a much steadier homelife but John had a tough upbringing. Both of them losing their mothers at a young age was also likely a factor in them coming together. Paul id say was / is more two faced but John was a bit of a bully and not very nice alot of the time. Both are / were supremely talented but also supremely egotistical.

Anyway, all going according to plan we will kick this off on Wednesday (the 14th of this month) at around 20:00.

I feel the same Necro. Never considered myself a big fan. Looking at my music library I only have the 2 double cd collections (the red and blue albums) and Abbey Road - and an unofficial monophonic release called Introspective.
So I will use this tournament as an opportunity to explore their discography further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,107 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

    Cheers Necro!

Format of the tournament will be as follows.

Kicks off around 20:00 this evening assuming I get the kids to bed and nothing unexpected crops up.

In round 1, there are 92 groups with 2 songs per group.

I will post them in blocks of 4, so in each post there will be 8 songs and people pick their preferred choice from each of the 4 and post their picks on thread.

People will obviously have their favourites but Im conscious of overloading so Im thinking making 2 posts per night to allow people to give a listen or two to some of the lesser known songs. That would equate to 16 songs per day for 12 days to get us past round 1. Votes will be counted for a 24 hour period only.

The winners from Round 1 will be entered into an open draw for round 2 and so on until we whittle it down to the top two songs.

Im thinking for the final, we will have a secret vote as in people will PM me their pick, allow 48 hours for people to decide then have the reveal. For the sake of transparency, once the winner is revealed I will post on thread who voted for what song.

I will abstain from voting in any of the rounds but will cast the deciding vote in the event there is a tie in any of the rounds.

Looking forward to kicking it off and hopefully people discover something new, its hard to top finding new songs to stick on repeat!

    May the best Beatle win!!

Sounds good. Will the songs be seeded? You don't necessarily want potentially the two most popular songs against each other in the first round and one getting knocked out immediately. Or if no seeding, then maybe consider a second chance round where all the losers from Round 1 are voted for and 2 (say) get to go in to roud 2?

Nope, no seeding, just a straight shoot out.

I toyed with the idea of having seeds but tbh that just gives (imo) an unfair advantage to the heavy hitters. By not having seeds it means people really have to consider their choices and that in essence is what this is all about, getting the consensus of what is their best song overall.

Could maybe have a second chance for round 1 only where 2 songs that are eliminated in round 1 can get back in for round 2 based on a second vote. Let me think about it and I will finalise something before we kick off.

So we have 24 hours to get the votes in each time? I really like that.

I'm getting too old for the first to 7 votes or most votes in 20 minutes style of tournament, I like something that offers a lot more breathing room like this that I can get more invested in and ultimately be more crushingly disappointed when the rest of these feckers make the wrong choice... :pac:

Obviously Revolution Number 9 is going to walk it.

Yep. I think for something like this, it's key to give people the chance to really think about their picks. I've discovered many times over the years with music that with one or two listens I wouldn't think much of them but when I sat down and properly listened I discovered i actually loved the song. Plus it allows people that may be AFK for a while a chance to participate.

It will be interesting to see how the songs from the White Album (with apologies for referring to it by that name) will fare.

I note there is no seeding planned. Will the draw be totally random, or will it be done chronologically or using some alternative non random way of deciding on the pairings?

Round 1 draw has already been made. I used an online randomiser. Entered all 184 song titles into it, selected they be added into pairs and hey presto, draw made. Looking at the round 1 draw, if it were me having to choose, there are a couple of pairings that would be extremely difficult for me to pick one over the other.

So I think we will run with QB's suggestion.

Of the 92 songs eliminated in round 1, we will hold a second vote and the top 2 picks will both move on to round 2.

This is the only round that this will occur and after that, once its gone its gone.

    See you all at 8!

Apologies if you’ve explained this but I’ve scanned the thread and can’t see it but won’t that leave you with uneven numbers?

92 Round 1 winners and 2 wild cards is 94. So after Round 2 we’ll be down to 47 songs.

Looking forward to this by the way.

Ok, we will amend it to the top 4 from those eliminated after round 1 will be added to round 2. That should even it out?
