    Pity

Don't base it on one story :D

They will have a chat about one of the weird stories doing the rounds and that one was a South African pastor who says God told him to fart on people like that.

I've followed them over from Classic Hits. Haven't tuned in to Nova in so long because of the previous breakfast duo. Deleted the CH app and downloaded the Nova one (don't have fm on this phone). Changed the radio in the kitchen too. Will have to check the CH thread and see how people got on today :p

I heard about 15 mins this morning.
Too shouty and zany and the one song I heard was definitely not a classic rock track.
I'll stick with planet rock thanks.

The 30 mins i heard this morning i was not too keen on. Mainly because i much prefer the music as on classic hits.

This is me too, enjoyed the lads but the music just wasn't my thing.

What's the target demographic for Nova vs CH
..am I even in it for Nova lol (speaking as an urban, working but not a white van man, mid 40s)?!?!?

At a guess id say you're exactly Nova's target no?

My tuppence worth on this morning. I thought it was great to hear the two lads this morning. For me morning radio is not really about the music. Its a bit of a diversion for when you're getting ready for work. There's a bit of chat, a bit of news and traffic etc.
Focusing on the silly story about the farting Pastor is not really relevant. They are presenters not DJ's and they do it well. its a bit of fun and lightness in the morning. If i want to listen to the music I'm into I'll listen to specialist programmes or spoitfy or whatever. There are a huge amount of people who only listen to the radio in the mornings, me included for the most part, and as long as the music there is is not rap etc. I don't care.
I don't think morning radio is suppose to be about music. if it was more stations would be doing it. Instead they concentrate on capturing their specific target audience in the evenings/ weekends where you are more likely to listen to a station that delivers the genre of music you're into. Just MHO.:o

Not even if it's licensed specifically as a music station like Nova is?

No not really. Aren't the others the same though? 98fm, fm104 etc al.?Don't they all have chatty morning radio ?

I know what you mean. However, Radio Nova's big selling point was that you were going to get a station playing classic rock all day. I don't recall it ever saying that you were going to have breakfast shows with a lot of chat. It's okay to have a bit of a chat provided music comes first in the morning show.

Tbh anyone who thought PJ and Jim being on breakfasts was suddenly going to make Nova compete with Planetrock need a reality check.
All we can hope for is a better selection of music and be thankful the other 2 are gone.

One slight concern is the producer Clint, he seems to be found of steering his shows away from the rock/guitar ethos of the station. Namely talking about a Tina Turner movie and how great a performer she is. Not denying she's good but is that story fitting for a supposed fresh new start, remains to be seen whether Nova can attract their old listeners back. That Colm Hayes lad has a lot to answer for.

Producer Clint should be next against the wall :D Think he got a bit over enthusiastic with the rule to keep the guitar rock to the minimum.

I wonder if Nova did another survey and asked if listeners wanted bants or proper rock music, how would it turn out?

Nova will never compete with PlanetRock when it comes to actually playing rock music on a daily basis. During the day, the "lightest" you'll hear PR play is something like REM or Talking Heads. The heaviest Nova will play is Enter Sandman or Heatseeker (and they think that they are being edgy and hard playing those!!)

For my Nova listening I think that I'll stick to Pat James and Tony Ainscough - thankfully they aren't restricted in their playlists. For any other radio it's PR.

It seems I won't be listening in to this again so.

I can't stand your man PJ at all to be honest, I just think he's an absolute clown and he's gone past his sell by date.

I said it on here years ago and I'll say it again,

The best radio I ever heard in Ireland was when phantom 105.2 stopped, but the frequency was still active and for about a week or more there was music playing on it. Just music, no ads, no human involvement and no bull****. And the crazy thing was, the music was really good ! Not the modern day repeat crap or rehashed old songs but really good music from anytime and anywhere.

But of course we'll never get that again, it doesn't make them money, despite the fact at the time of they happening they probably had the most listeners ever on one frequency !

That’s why nova was decent before this **** started

    Re nova/planet rock
Isn't nova supposed to be a "classic rock" station?
Isn't that what there licence is based on?
Speaks volumes that they should have similar music playlists but don't.
There is an audience for a classic rock station, nova pretend to be one but sound more like today fm than planet rock.

Oh I know, I listened then too , but that transition period was the best.

There's a thread on here somewhere and when that happened it blew up !

Jesus I remember that, it was awesome.

Back to Nova - I was no fan of Hayes but I cannot listen to PJ and Jim for even thirty seconds. PJ's voice/fake accent drives me mad, and the forced laughter at all the wackiness. Shoot me now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,370 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

PJ doesn't have a fake accent at all.

The problem I see with the show is not the 2 guys, it's that their target audience and Nova's playlist don't go together. I know my kids, being the age they are, liked the show and the music pm 4FM, but aren't taking to the new slot. And as much as I'd prefer what Nova plays, the playlists each morning are the same old stuff. I mean Jump by Van Halen is beyond cheesy.

If anyone caught the Top 10 guitar solos on Monday, it is a definite indicator of what the listeners want to hear. Whether this will be taken on board is questionable.

I gave Nova another chance over the last couple of days (bar PJ & Jim), and I had to turn off on a few occasions. Why is Dermot Kennedy played on the station? The same goes for George Ezra and Florence And The Machine, among others.

I heard it for a couple of minutes this morning and thought the same, I would not able to stand much of it.

What I heard was him acting like a zany character, totally put on. You will hear people do this for a few seconds telling a joke but this was non stop.

20seconds in below you can hear him talking normally. It sounded nothing like that.

George and Dermot....classic rock....I heard Luke play another of those type singers, cant (dont want to) remember his name...just awful trash.....i did laugh when he said he "had to" do the Millerpedia music news bit....

Presumably they're played to try and attract the middle of the road audience.

However I have to wonder why someone would switch to Nova for MOTR music that they'll have already been getting elsewhere? Meanwhile, those who might have tuned to Nova to hear rock "guitar based" music will end up going elsewhere.

I would have thought that the middle of the road audience in Dublin is well catered for by Sunshine 106.8, Q102 and Classic Hits. I would imagine, too, that the so-called "commuter belt", which is part of Nova's license, is likely to be able to pick up some or all of those other stations.

There are also the many online options available for that audience such as RTE Gold, Music One Ireland, Gem Radio Gold and Dublin's ABC.

What I could see happening, in the case of the rock fans, is that they may go onto Spotify or online with the likes of 2XM (RTE), 8Radio, Gem Radio New Wave or Rogue Radio, depending on their tastes, or maybe just putting on good old old-fashioned (these days!) CDs!!

I think if Radio Nova concentrated on its core product, i.e. classic rock music, it might actually do alright. That's only my opinion though.
