"Main steam media" isn't that phrase usually reserved for conspiracy theorists?

And his facts are indeed correct and that sadly this virus has killed many many more people over 65 compared to younger age groups

Yet the above conveniently ignores the important fact that the current situation is not just about deaths. But in actually keeping the rate of infection down in all age groups so that our health services can continue to cope.

Because the facts are that approx 50% of those in hospital with covid are under 65 years of age.

But maybe for some it's easy to ignore that ...

Just wondering could you break down that 50% of under 65s by age group please? It's your go to argument but you never go into more detail about it for some reason

It's not going. it's being eased slightly to county borders. You still can't legally travel wherever you want unless you have an "essential" reason

The change will mean little to those in rural areas or those who were priced out of Dublin but whose relatives or friends might still be there.

Ireland are easing restrictions, some countries in Europe are reimposing more.

I can't see how that is not pertinent in a thread that constantly compares Ireland to the rest of Europe and sometimes individual States.

but a lot of other counties have had little restrictions for the best part of a Year.

why do you keep ignoring that fact?

Imagine attending a press conference and getting as pissy as Micheal Martin has gotten when journalists ask questions? I'm seriously beginning to question his mental capacity with the way he's reacted to some journalists recently

We can only compare ourselves to countries when things are going wrong for them that's the rules

I can't see how that is not pertinent in a thread that constantly compares Ireland to the rest of Europe and sometimes individual States.

It's not pertinent in reply to a post detailing how the Irish authorities have failed to take any internationally recognised proactive measures to curb coronavirus, and instead have solely relied on a series of lockdowns and the public shouldering the sole responsibility of dealing with the pandemic.

As usual for you, you've cherry picked a single line and then gone off on a nonsensical tangent. I suspect you're being deliberately obtuse but in case you are completely missing the point, I'll indulge you and explain it to you.
There is no remaining serious justification for the 5 kilometre limit
It's going on the 12th like I pointed out to you. But for some reason you don't seem pleased.
You seem to think I should be grateful that the 5k limit will be removed in 2 weeks. But I'm not actually the one expressing that opinion on the justification for the 5k limit.

That bolded line is a quote from the Taoiseach, last May. He's on record as saying that he doesn't believe the 5k limit is justified, and in fact has research that shows it actually contributes to people in urban areas being forced into more crowded situation. Yet despite him not believing in this apparently harmful restriction, it's one that has been imposed on people for most of the last 5 months.

He's similarly on record as saying:
"Equally the current distinctions between different types of shop are at best arbitrary. Supermarkets have been open throughout the pandemic while implementing measures about distancing and hygiene. The figures on community spread suggest that the supermarkets have not played a role in spreading the virus – where the overwhelming issue is clustering in health facilities, nursing homes and some workplaces like meat factories".
This still holds true today, yet his government maintains these "arbitrary" distinctions in retail. To the ludicrous level that shoe shops can now sell children's but no adult's shoes.

I have no expert opinion on whether these restrictions are right or wrong. I'm merely pointing out that the man ultimately responsible for implementing them has stated that they serve no valid purpose. There have been similarly contradictory statements from various NPHET members around contract tracing, which I've detailed before (as you pointed out, there's a search function).

It may very well be that France is similarly run by a bunch of craven, incompetent hypocrites with zero credibility who have utterly failed to take any proactive measures to combat Covid. But that's of zero relevance.

A quick look at gozunda's post history will reveal many critiques of the Irish media, the media that most of us refer to as MSM. He's flipped the script since COVID though, which shows what it can do to ones mind.

“The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

Can anyone explain to me how the shoe thing works. How is it going to be economically viable for shoe shops to open for kids shoes by appointment only. I just can't see how this can work. Am i right in thinking that's all they can open for. The like's of Dunnes, Tesco's could do this probably but shoe shops open for just kids shoes i don't see how they could make this work.

i was wondering the exact same thing this morning! Are there any details or guidelines on this? It seems absolutely crazy. Do you physically have to ring the currently closed shoe shop? Or do they have to create an online facility on their website (if they have one) to book?? Its madness

I heard Donnelly on the NT news just there appealing to the public to abide by the restrictions for "a few more weeks".

It seems we've moved from working for a "meaningful Christmas" to a "meaningful Summer" now.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 50 ✭✭Theworldisy

Very few shoe shops sell only kids shoe's. Going to have get staff back in. Paying lighting heating bills etc so sell only kid's shoes by appointment only just surely by my outlook on it just is not possible to work for the shops. Most shoe shops sell all size shoe's cant open profitably just selling kids shoes. Also by appointment only. So you get people in to the shop by appointment and what happens if they just don't like the shoes etc. How many allowed in at a time etc. Who thinks up this stuff.

there is no remaining serious justification for the 5 kilometre limit

Hospitisations, ICU numbers are similar enough now to when he made that assertion.

Limit is being lifted because there is no remaining justification for it, IMO.

This isn't very hard follow TBF, the 5km exercise limit was the main bug on here for the past month. It's now going and of course people are now finding other things to whinge about.

Will they force shoe shops to open. Because if i have read correctly that's what they are going to have to do. No shop will open for this they would be crazy to. Minimum staff needed two plus all bills to cater for appointment only shoe's. Like is this for real. Also need to set up an appointment service. Also like most things probably half won't turn up. It's like the voucher idea. Just basically thrown out their with little or not taught it how it's going to work. We really are led by the biggest bunch of waster's at the moment.

    I presume you mean countries.

How you have decided I'm ignoring facts that may only exist in your head is quite bizarre.

But if you want to discuss restrictions in other countries by all means tap it out.

Imagine going back to January 2020 and telling people in a years time you'll have to book an appointment for your child to get a pair of shoes but if you're an adult you're not allowed to get a pair.

I'll never be able to wrap my head around the sheer stupidity of the world right now.

Went for a spin out the country, set the dial to Newstalk. There was Jack Chambers, Minister for Sport having a terse debate with Andrea Gilligan. Irritated no doubt at being shoved on national radio after the GAA controversy that blew up overnight. "I know people are frustrated these past few weeks, but if we hang in there another few weeks people might get a summer." It has been a full year you entitled ignoramus. Hearing such casual piffle reveals the disconnect between the political elite and the general public. We're under the thumb of imbeciles.

It’s not really a great response TBH

Deaths are used as a justification to restrict movement and hinder certain freedoms for a year now.

Although it turns out Covid isn’t even the leading cause of death in any country, severe restrictions or not.

So surely if preventing deaths is a reason to suspend democracy for 54 weeks in Ireland, shouldn’t we make laws to prevent as many deaths as possible?

This is for the next time the Gardai blab on about following the guidelines over Easter...

Irish Examiner: Eight gardaí have hair cut at Pearse Street Garda Station

Up to eight members of An Garda Síochána had their hair cut by a colleague last week in a Dublin station in a breach of Covid-19 guidelines.

Although personal service outlets such as barbers and hairdressers have been closed since December 31, it is believed one officer, “who may have been a barber previously” cut the hair of his colleagues at Pearse Street station.

    "Most of us"?

    Really....

So you're saying " I've flipped the switch" having previously critiqued the media and now by continuing to do so?

    How's that work exactly?

You gotta say there's some absolute geniuses running things. Open up community testing centres 3 months into level 5 when cases have dropped massively.

Did they not think it would have been a better idea to do it last November when things were opened up???

Also shout out to George Lee, again last night going on about "data models" and "mathematicians from all over the country, in all the universities". The way he talks you'd think they are trying to diffuse a bomb.
