Ouch, those swab numbers put a dampener on things. Not the worst numbers but not great either and fits with there being a plateauing of infection.

With 5 new walk in centres I think we can expect positive swabs to increase or plateau

Its important not to think its armageddon when it happens.

Yeah it's a big jump, such a shame.
Maybe a delay in reporting of swabs yesterday?

And all those who work in the events and wedding industry. Its very difficult to have your livelihood decimated. A lot of people forget about this when they dismiss the wedding related queries.

They dismiss them because it doesn’t impact them so therefore it doesn’t matter.

Same people kick off about how NPHET have ruined people’s businesses as well.

Thanks for the advice, but given I don’t see a single days figures as either ‘Armageddon’ or ‘it’s over, open up’ it’s a bit wasted on me.

Cases were 17 lower than swabs yesterday, so any delay look minimal. As always, tomorrow will tell a lot regarding any backlog.

High no 2 ways around it. Positivity Rate though isn't too high though still very high. I think it's just going to be a long road in lockdown till the vaccines are fully rolled out

    Watch the bloody briefing.

Philip Nolan said that was worse case scenario if there’s a big increase in mixing. He added the caveat that if people stick by the restrictions then the vaccination rollout reduces any future risks of such an increase like the above.

He went into clear, concise detail about this, including how in 8 weeks time if people stick to restrictions then the vaccination programme will cut a theoretical R number of 1.4 by half to 0.7. He compared this to if there was no vaccine at all.

Watch the briefing instead of looking at a single tweet.

they said the same sort of thing at the start of December

Very poor reporting by Fergal Bowers and usual bandwagon jumping by people.
That is not what was said at the briefing at all.
But sure have an oul pop anyhow..

That's bizarre - assumes zero impact on transmissibility from vaccines. Why would they publish such nonsense.

To be fair, RTÉ's health correspondent has posted this in a tweet. He doesn't tell you to watch the briefing, nor does he give any sort of context of said projection.

Bit harsh to blame OP for not watching the briefing when, most people will also see this tweet in isolation.

Clearly they are not pretending this.

Not enough will be vaccinated by April to impact transmission to such a significant degree. Bowers is just parroting a figure too. It's a potential rise in cases if the number of social interactions increases. This may not happen.

It wasn’t bad reporting. Those were the facts that were stated at the time.

    He later tweeted this

    https://twitter.com/fergalbowers/status/1377281059423932417?s=21

Funnily enough the poster ignored that one and posted that first one to whip up a frenzy in here.

Read my last post where the same health correspondent put that tweet into context.

Watch the briefings instead of looking at individual tweets.

It's a tough one though. People here know how crappy and inept our journalists have been through this whole thing. Bowers tweets of late seem to be targeted at maximum outrage.

I especially refuse to see one days figures as both.

Its always amazing when we see people coming out with both opinions from different figures on a single day.

Those swab numbers are good. Compared to last Wednesday it's ten more cases from 1,000 more swabs.

Ever the optimist, cases over the last two weeks have also well aligned with the GP referral tracker, which means we should see even better numbers in the days to come.

No is the answer to that question there talking about unvaccinated people continuing to mix and spread the disease now which will give an exponential spurt growth to the numbers with the b117 variant much more transmissable.

Vast majority of us are still not vaccinated so we need to cop on now or face a potential 4th wave of the virus down the line thats what they meant.

Its Fergal Bowers responsibility to contextualise what he tweets. Not everyone can watch the briefing. Pretty shocking use of twitter by him TBH

Ah I meant a lab not reporting swabs. I don't mean the delay/backlog from swabs becoming cases.
It's just quite a jump or the preceding days dropped quite alot.

Apologies, I should have not trusted the tweet from an RTE correspondent. Instead ill watch the briefing at 3pm on a work day?

The timeline given is up to September, we'll have huge numbers vaccinated by May.

He put out the next tweet over 20 minutes later. It is his job to provide a balanced, timely reporting of events that take place.

I completely agree with you that the briefings need to be watched for full context but we know that the majority of people who see that tweet, will take just that tweet into consideration.

And he did contextualise that in a later tweet.

That poster took one tweet in isolation, and posted it here to cause outrage.

Fergal Bowers, like everyone else, has 280 characters to make his point. Philip Nolan’s modelling can be very complex and it’s not going to fit into one tweet. It was a tweet later (which I have posted) where you see that the poster’s question of pretending vaccines don’t exist was answered.

Whereas if people watched the briefings then they’d see all of it for themselves. But no, they take one tweet in isolation and don’t bother their arses to do any research.

So you take one tweet and didn’t make any effort to look for any context, which Fergal Bowers did long before you posted that tweet.

Why did you take one tweet and post it with a question that had actually been answered in a later tweet?
