I dont pretend to understand all the reasons behind the current restrictions - however I do find much of the endless whinging about "will someone not think about the houses!" to be disingenuous at best.

During the last recession- construction and housing demand fell through the floor and didn't pick up again until there was an economic recovery. Which tbf once started was at full stretch very quickly.

Builders affected during that period also emigrated as they were right to do but they also came back in large numbers when it did so.

Yes there's always a need for new housing - however it's not like everyone is living on the streets atm. Priority is being given to allow kids back in school - even if that is going to keep out case numbers up and to keeping covid related heathcare services running smoothly.

I'd prefer to see some kept restrictions in place rather than ending up back with crazy numbers of new cases by opening up a whole bunch of things all at once.

Construction not opening is a joke

From what I can see, it looks like they’re going to keep everything closed until schools finish up in June. They’re going to keep kicking the can down the road with everything else, so they don’t have to close the schools again.
It’s now clear that absolutely nothing meaningful is going to be opened until mid June, shortly before the schools finish up.

After this mornings kite flying I would imagine they will delay construction till May, and non essential retail will return 6 weeks after that in mid June.
This will conveniently coincide with the schools wrapping up for the summer holidays.

I wish they would just come out and be honest about it rather than giving people false hope and stupid lengthy 6 week extensions in between reviews when it’s quite clear now they have no intention of opening anything any time soon.
They won’t do it though, because they know there will be mass opposition to it.
So instead we will have to endure another two months of drip feeding and kite flying. There is just no accountability whatsoever when it comes to this government.

It’s absolutely soul destroying that we are going to spend longer in lockdown this year than we did in 2021, the first 6 months of the year are a total write off even though this year we have the benefit of hindsight, a lot more knowledge, and of course the vaccines.

We were in full lockdown from mid March until early June last year. This year we will have been in level 5 from early October until June, albeit with a 23 day break in December for our ‘meaningful Christmas’.
How anyone can say this is proportionate or in our best interests as a whole is beyond me. Not when you consider the catastrophic economic and social effects these lockdowns are having. There is simply no justifying it.
We are on a suicide mission now.

Exactly. If everyone met up like this for the next few months then the virus numbers in the population would plummet, giving space for vaccination. It should be made clear that such outdoor meetings is low risk and is to be encouraged in place of indoor meetings without masks.

Most people in the countryside are ignoring the 5km rule. Very easy do.

I’ve been banging this drum for weeks when I meet people out n about. We’re all WELL aware of what needs to continue to be done with regards to social distancing, mask wearing and hygiene.

The ridiculous 5km ‘rule’ seems to be tied to some legislation BS regarding the evictions of those not paying rent / mortgages.

And the COWARDS running the country are too terrified to lift it as a result.

I’m furious the past few days. Looking at crowded off-licences, shops, outdoor markets... and I can’t take a drive to the beach without the hassle of checkpoints and fines? Utter nonsense...
