i found an article in the IT that the head of nova had asked for a licence extension to cover other population areas, so i suspect the extra broadcasting cost is worth it?
Its chief executive Kevin Branigan is seeking an extension of Nova’s licence area to Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Galway and Kilkenny, as well as the midlands and the northeast.

That was 2017. I'm not sure if any of those submissions are going anywhere now.

it was posted just in relation to the cost of broadcasting on a much wider basis, rather than about those submissions themselves, though.

I think the arrival of Nova certainly did not help Phantom, but Phantom was struggling before Nova arrived. It staggered on as TXFM until its 10 year license was due to run out and then called it a day.

Phantom/TXFM was much more of a niche station than Nova and it's core target audience were increasingly listening to music by other means. It did lose older more general rock music fans to Nova alright.

True Declan but when was the last time you heard Interpol,Editors,Sonic Youth,Pixies on daytime nova since TX dissapeered...

PS..messing with the car radio today..tuned in nova..Miller waffling on as usual...his backing track was Slim shady...says it all really...

Haven't posted here in a while as I haven't been listening to much radio, but I had the radio on the last day in the car and was station hopping and left Nova on as there was a cracker of a tune on. So then Greg Gaughran comes on and I must say he's probably Nova's best DJ - a breath of fresh air. Delighted that they have given him the breakfast show. I have Nova on in the car now every morning rocking out to his tunes, mixed with just enough chat and current affairs.
I had been listening to Podcasts but prefer his show for the last week. Keep up the great work Greg!

What do the rest of ye think of Greg in the mornings?

Greg, Pat James, and Tony are arguably the three greatest DJ’s on Nova. Pity that Greg is only filling the slot before PJ Gallagher and Jim take over, but at the same time I’m looking forward to hearing what they bring to the table.

Y’all should check out Greg’s Saturday Soundtrack from 6-9 p.m. Saturday evenings just before Pat James is on. One word. UNREAL!

I think it'll be just PJJ on nova as opposed to CH...they'll have no say on the tracks played....and endless nova plugging...

I've switched back over to Nova in anticipation of PJ and Jim moving over and i must say I'm really enjoying Greg in the mornings. i had been listening to Nova back in the day when Pat Courtney was on breakfast and right up to Marty and Dee but abandoned Nova in disgust when those two took over. PJ and Jim are funny and i think they'll be more suited to the music on Nova than the other two. (Except for PJ's love of Michael Bolton).

I have noticed that Nova have been advertising that they are going back to their roots or something? I heard something about no more Ed Sheeran? Did i imagine that?

Check out Classic hits Insta and FB. all the comments about the new breakfast show are negative. all of them. Those outside the pale are furious about losing the two lads.
How can the management not be taking any of this in!!?...

I assume Nova wouldn't have Michael Bolton 'How can we be lovers' in its play list or can PJ sneak it in ?!?!

Started listening to Nova this week, the music isn't bad but it's not my cup of tea. Will put up with it to listen to the lads but then either flick back to CH and/or a Global station on smart speaker.

The banter with them and Tara and Mike will be missed though.

Tara reads the news on both stations so you cannot rule out the possibility that she might turn up on their show.

Think she covers on Nova but in the most part, ya man John Harte covers breakfast (he sometimes covers on CH too).

The English producer guy that covers Mike, is he Nova?

Jim is doing a Q&A about the change, podcast is out on Monday.

Ask him was he pressured into it.....or why would he choose to go backwards in his career...:p

Greg is just holding the fort until PJ Gallagher and Jim McCabe start their breakfast show on April 1st. Nova's former breakfast hosts Colm Hayes and Lucy Kennedy are swapping places with PJ and Jim on Classic Hits on the same day.

Greg has a no nonsense approach with no inane banter. It's certainly a novelty in morning breakfast shows.

Ah no way!! That's disappointing.. I'll give PJ and Jim a chance for a couple mornings, but I'd say I might be going back to the pod casts again. PJ is a funny comedian, but I'd find him a bit much on the radio every morining.. some of the banter gets a bit tiresome.

When is Greg on so? To be honest, the mornings are usually my only chance to listen to the radio, so may be radio hibernation for me again...

There's been a few promos this weekend for PJ and Jim's new show.

During weekdays, Greg Gaughren is normally on evenings from 7pm. Presumably, he is going back to that slot. He also has a few slots on weekends including Saturday nights.

Thanks for the info. Not a great listening time for me. Only ever listen to radio in the car and breakfast shows if they are worth listening to..

Have to laugh at the ads for the new morning show...
    ''We're calling it Morning Glory'.

Really, because that's what it was called a couple of years ago.
Have you lost all those listeners since?

Out driving this afternoon, heard alanis morrisette, florence and the machine and dermot kennedy.
I'd understand if it was classic hits.

Nova has playlisted Alanis and Florence for years.

Regular playlisters..That DK is painful..this speech impediment/ non binary accent way of singing seems to be on trend...

Must say I've really enjoyed listening to Greg in the mornings - it's my idea of what a breakfast show should be - good music, intelligent input, news, traffic and sport - none of this inane forced banter, happy slappy presenting style.

Might give Robbie Fogarty on Sunshine a listen - I cannot STAND PJ Gallagher, Jim is ok on his own, but hey, it's not up to me.

Yeah..it's sad when they think that radio listeners NEED a comedy act breakfast show....is it any wonder the "youth" don't feel the need to listen to the radio...they're forgetting that its the oldies that still listen....

My wife listens to Sunshine. I can’t stand it. How much ‘relaxing’ can you do?

Well folks, I had a listen to Nova on the way into work this morning, so I caught the very start. The funny thing is, I wasn't a massive fan of PJ. I mean, I could take him or leave him but I saw him doing a TV interview with Dierdre Kane recently and I really warmed to him. He comes across like a decent sort. I met Jim many years ago and he was an absolute gent. So far, my impression of their show is it's better than what we got from Colm and Lucy by a good stretch. I can see why they wouldn't be everybody's thing but they'll do. And when I don't want to listen to chatter, it's out with Spotify.

It wouldn't be hard to be better than the previous two!
Discalimer though, I enjoyed the lads on classic hits so was naturally going to follow them over. Heard the first hour and enjoyed them as usual, music was good and they kept to the old format of a bit of talk then a couple of songs, seemed to flow well. Noticed Tara was doing the news but obviously recorded as no interaction.

Yes they won't be everyone's cup of tea, but as I said, a vast improvement from the other two who as time went on, turned me off Nova to the extent I barely listened at all anymore. Have enjoyed dipping in and out again the last couple of weeks.

PJ talking about farting on people's heads as I tuned in to see what they're like.

If that's for the target market, I'm not it...
