When can we expect a Lombardy type situation there?
How are they suddenly similar to Lombardy?

    Hospital numbers at 8pm

Total 345 (down from 371 last night)
ICU 92 (down from 93 last night)

Total number now lower than peak of second wave
    349 - 26 October

On the hub, hospital numbers just dropped to 366 this morning (from 371)

Admissions over night. Very few (usually no) discharges.

Compare morning to morning or evening to evening. Comparing morning to evening is just silly.

This is why I always go with the morning figures :)

There'll always be a small rush of admissions in the early A.M. as people try to "sleep it off" and then wake up in the middle of the night feeling terrible and present themselves at A&E.

We have had a much more conservative approach than the US throughout this. Its not going to change. Vaccine rollout much here much slower. Posters continually arguing and complaining is just not doing themselves or anyone any good.

I'm not comparing us to texas, I'm comparing texas to lambardy, why is the same situation not happening there.

Anyone have any links perhaps to a youtube video about the effort required to debunk bad science?

I was reading a fact-check article and was thinking about about how the amount of effort that has to go into compiling such an article would take hours.

Whereas anyone with a platform (twitter following or what have you) can throw out a claim in a few seconds, making it very easy to spread false information while the effort required to counter that is enormous.

Person A with a few thousand followers could throw out random "fact" #123 with a few taps, then Person B has to spend hours researching and compiling info to explain why "fact" #123 is in fact total BS.

I was thinking there might be a good article or video talking about the imbalance between the two - I think the internet is so toxic in this way in that it appears to give equal weight to Person A and Person B, where Person A can present themselves as authoritative and trustworthy without any real balanced or accredited expertise. It's easy to forget how skewed and unfair it is that the volume of bad information to good puts such a heavy burden on those who are trying to correct the people who can just throw out a "fact" due to ignorance, or other reasons, and present it as absolutely true.

    Very good points.

I find it a better approach not to take YouTube or any social media as evidence of anything in this and stick to the written word. You may have to do more work but you should get a more complete picture.

I wouldn't take anything read on Social Media with any kind of weight, but unfortunately lots of people do. And that directly feeds into the madness of the lockdown protests / 5g / Chemtrails / Gemma O'Doh...

UK 7 day average cases is currently at its lowest since late September and 7 day average deaths is lowest since late October and both are trending down fast. Hard to quantify how much is due to lockdown and how much down to vaccine but great to see. Good chance they might speed up their cautious reopening plan.

Many factors, but I would suspect age of the demographic to be one.

Is that similar to the two Austrian cases? Hopefully nothing to worry about and just coincidence, with the amount of AZ in arms in UK you'd think something would have shown if issue (or perhaps a dodgy batch)

Well they have had 60% of the deaths per million that Lombardy has with only 25% of the population density

Slightly worrying. I am glad not to be in the early cohorts group for the vaccine. But at the same time i hate to think the most vunerable groups are Guinea pigs for the vaccines.

At least five other European countries have halted the use of a batch of the jab, after reports of blood clots sparked a safety probe from the European drugs watchdog.

Hadnt heard that before. Hopefully unrelated.

They halted all batches in Denmark it would seem.

Best not to think of them as Guinea pigs. Certain people are at such a high risk from severe disease when then get Covid. The vaccine has been tested and while there are always some side effects to any vaccine the risk of vaccine is far lower than risk of getting covid.
But you do make a good point that by time we get to lower risk groups we will know more about both Covid and the vaccines.
Based on available data vaccinating the vulnerable first is the right thing to do.

EMA has already looked into the initial reports that came from Austria.

Given the widespread use of AZ in the UK if there was going to be a major issue it would have been flagged up by now.

"The information available so far indicates that the number of thromboembolic events in vaccinated people is no higher than that seen in the general population. As of 9 March 2021, 22 cases of thromboembolic events had been reported among the 3 million people vaccinated with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca in the European Economic Area."

Hadn't seen that, cheers. Guess its Denmark being extra cautious.

Some people in certain demographics could also be more prone to clots if they have specific medical conditions or due to age, not being able to move from a bed etc too I guess. Good that they are being fairly proactive at looking at these issues but guess its their job and also ensures confidence in the vaccines.

Looks like the Austrians initially flagged up batch ABV5300 which comprised one million doses - had been delivered to 17 EU countries.

On other threads already but Biontech / Pfizer have just announced that in Israel data shows their vaccine is 94% effective in stopping asymptomatic covid. That is the end of Covid if so. If other vaccines don't stop asymptomatic spread I reckon we need to focus on Pfizer as much as possible

    Also works against recent mutations:

Israel’s use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine coincided with broad spread of the more infectious virus variant first identified in the U.K., meaning that the efficacy observed in the country indicates the vaccine also works well against that mutant strain

    Nothing new for AZ there,

Over the years, AstraZeneca has had its share of legal trouble, paying more than $1 billion in federal fines and legal settlements for corrupting clinical trials and illegally promoting antipsychotics. It has also had to deal with several lawsuits filed by patients who say the drugmaker’s products injured them.

again, I;d take the claims with a grain of salt! No one pleads guilty unless they stink!

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc agreed on Wednesday to plead guilty to a U.S. criminal charge relating to promotion of its now-withdrawn Bextra pain medicine and will pay a record $2.3 billion to settle allegations it improperly marketed 13 medicines.

As a matter of interest, if the virus had originated in Ireland, how well do you think it would have been contained?
Ireland had what, two months' notice that the virus was on the way before it got here?

It was at the Chinese government, not the Chinese public.
