Yeah I'd imagine he's a role model for people as someone that they could aspire to emulate one day and earn that much. Never say never kinda thing. Reach for the stars. #zero-negativity

People were complaining about Varadker on here last year after he got over the initial few press conferences and then largely disappeared from view - aside from the odd interview or press appearance - and let NPHET become the face of the response to the response. The general opinion was that he was a clown that didn't know what he was doing - but it was one of those boards things that was partly about whoever happens to be in charge at any one moment is a clown and the alternative guy/gal is way better.

For the record, I truly don't like Varadker. I think he's cynical and self-serving and he has a lot of the media in Ireland in his back pocket. I wouldn't trust him as far I could throw him. I thought he was good enough at the very, very start of this - which was a surprise to me - but as time has gone, his antics leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I wouldn't rate MM a great deal either, but there's no doubt to me that it's tougher, in some ways, trying to marshal the government and the country through this period than it was during the first flush of this crisis.

Trying to manage how to re-open, managing the vaccine rollout, managing the expectations of people who are very, very tired and restless after a year of this - and dealing with coalition partners constantly trying to make themselves look good, often at your expense, in the media. You'd have to be a political genius to look well juggling all of that.

Last March/April was an extraordinary period and of course it wasn't easy to govern through that, but politically it was straightforward in a sense - people just wanted to be told what to do in the simplest possible terms, the opposition didn't exist, it didn't even enter into many people's heads that FG had basically been told by the electorate to leave office a few weeks previously. Simon Harris had the swiftest and most complete political rehabilitation of all time - literally just before that he'd been deliberately hidden away from view during the GE campaign, but he suddenly was a voice of authority with sky high approval figures. For a while, then people went back to calling him a fool again - until Donnelley took over and then Donnelley was the clown and people wondered whether Simon was going to come back.
There is also a big contrast in communications. Sure it was ad nauseum last year but it also came to us in ways that suited our circumstances. Since the new government that has turned into a shambles at times. One could point to the nature of coalition making it difficult but how that all occurs is driven from the top. Martin's approach grates a lot more. His forte is hand to hand combat in the Dail and debates. This comes across in his speeches as well as he is not a naturally good communicator. Unfortunately neither is the MoH. That compounds the problems they face yet they have not managed to address it.

Well if these ****wits were able to get the vaccine out there would be a big difference... that is where the solutions is.
Not locking us down indefinitely...My hope is anyone with a brain tries to leave this rediculous country and head somewhere where a government aren't spineless whispering c*nts just damaging the people and the economy over and over

Rest in Peace to the 47 who sadly passed away but you love to know how many of them actually died from Covid and not with Covid. They need to stop classing every death as covid related. Filling us with lies and people need to wake up to this

Are they not announcing where these deaths are occurring?

I'd completely agree that LV is a better communicator than MM, but let's not forget that LV was pretty unpopular up until shít rapidly hit the fan last year.

I remember the first head to head debate between the two of them last year in the run up to the GE. Reading through the thread here at the time, boards' consensus opinion was that MM was the man and that LV was crap. So the recasting of LV as a communications guru is a fairly new phenomenon.

LV is politically in a pretty neat role. He can support the government when necessary or beneficial, drop hints that he disagrees when it looks good, claim credit when things right, escape the brunt of the flack when things go wrong.

370 in hospital time to go to Level 3 at a minimum.

The media scare mongering has gone on two long.

We don't even know if these people were in for something else and caught it in hospital.

7-day average in cases 490. Last Wednesday it was 623.

370 patients are hospitalised, 489 it was last Wednesday.

Would the high numbers be a result of the recent protest in Dublin

Perhaps the Doctors in the hospital could invite you in to determine who died of what and share your wealth of experience in the matter.

No offence but its been explained numerous times regarding the weekly trends and how they progress. Lower earlier in the week, Wednesday gives a bump, holds steady usually Thursday Friday & repeat again the following week

Martin is a great debater. I don't think even his harshest critics would deny that. His general communication skills are poor, and his leadership skills don't look much better.

His leadership skills are akin to his chin, weak.

I know a woman in her 90s who passed away from natural causes last April but who's death was classed as covid on the death cert even tho she had a negative covid test 2 days before she passed away. Her family were not happy with this
