Hang on, weren’t you giving it the “I’m alright Jacques” when you were getting, under the counter, bottles of beer sans substantial meal when the gastro pubs were open?

The bitterness is strong with this one, I distinctly remember Walter Mitty aka Pintman Paddy Losty threatening to ring the Guards. Three months later all the usual suspects are still stewing over it. "Schadenfreude" isn't a weissbier, if it were I'd be chugging one back right now.

Gastro pub, traditional pub...all the doors will be swinging open for trade by late summer and there isn't the faintest thing you & your curtain twitching brethren can do to stop that. Some mindful relaxation techniques might help, learn to let go & accept matters beyond the parameters of your control.

Easy enough for Em. He has decent enough looking wife he can plough into every night with the curtains half drawn after the baby has been put to sleep, and... he's still pulling a salary. Some of us have lost our jobs.

It's been said on here numerous times (although usually by the same posters) that people are fed up and not going to abide by restrictions. I don't see that happening at all. One woman opened up a salon in Dublin but that didnt see a load of businesses following suit. Did any?

Likewise with the protests. 1000 or so people attended two protests in Dublin and Cork. That's a very small number compared to those that didn't attend.

We are all seeing case numbers drop week on week and it looks like people are prepared to ride this out. This thread is by no means indicative of the general population. Yes, true, people are fed up, but I'm not seeing any real movement to defy regulations. People may be breaking the 5km rule, but it appears that's about as far as this "people are waking up and not going to accept lockdown anymore" goes.

I think you are right on the gastropub. I'd imagine hospitality will open to some extent by late summer.
I don't think traditional pubs (wet pubs) will open in 2021.
I'd love to see it but there are too many variables to play out yet as far as I'm concerned.
    Hopefully I'm Wrong.
Do you know something that makes you confident that traditional (wet pubs) will definately be open by late summer?

The food thing is now gone, all pubs have to open together.

    Really?
    I honestly hadn't heard that.
    When did that happen?

It says it in the revised plan, but then leo also said in September that they would never be treated separately again, that lasted 2 months.

He's not a minister. He's basically a critic of the government and particularly FF. Wants Martin's job before the next election.

Some people have lost loved ones, some are petrified of losing loved ones.

Your ilk seems to live in a selfish little bubble where you think there should be a national day of mourning because you lost your job but the virus is still a major threat to the vulnerable in society. “I lost my job” isn’t going to make people who have a pre-existing condition to shed many tears, bud.

Can anyone please explain to me why in gods name we will keep things shut after the majority are vaccinated?

I think some are addicted to lock down. I suggested that as soon as over 70’s are vaccinated they open the pubs and restaurants for them and people think I am mad.

It is mad to keep things shut when risks have eased.

The over 70s are not 'the majority'.

Yep. Wishful thinking by a small self-selected sample.

But where will the most vulnerable be when we don’t have a penny and have to cut back health services to pay back debts, increase taxes and cut public services generally.

We need to open up as soon as possible with a risk based approach. Once the over 70’s and most vulnerable are vaccinated then risks are significantly reduced.

They are the majority when it comes to this virus and fatalities.

To clarify I was making two distinct points:

    1. Open up for everyone when majority are vaccinated.

    2. Open up restaurants and bars for the over 70’s when they are vaccinated.

In the revised plan there is no mention of wet pubs at all until we reach level 2.
Unless I am reading it wrong.

Level 3 does not mention wet pubs - https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/ad569-level-3/

Level 2 does mention wet pubs -
    https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/18e18-level-2/

My reading on that is wet pubs are very definately separated from gastropubs.
That is why I was wondering if Bertie's Horse had information the rest of us didn't have when he stated traditional pubs would be open by late summer.
I hope he is right but I think it's unlikely.

    Isn't that the plan?
    2. Open up restaurants and bars for the over 70’s when they are vaccinated.

While I agree that restrictions should be eased when the most vulnerable have been vaccinated, I think we should probably look at construction, non-essential retail, 5km limits etc. first.

I hope it is the plan but there have been a lot of mixed messages.

Construction, non essential retail etc should open in April. Then we look at looking after the over 70’s - people forget they were cocooners this time last year, have had months not being able to grandkids etc.

With that in mind do you think it might be a better idea to allow household visits before bars and restaurants for the over 70s?

Don't be overly dramatic, pal. It's hardly the bubonic plague.

    Well....

If you have a pub full of vaccinated over 70’s what is the risk?

If you have multi generational in private settings is there a higher risk?

There is no Tír Na nÓg

People have and will continue to loose loved ones

2018 had more deaths than 2020 in Ireland

People are suggesting we open the pubs for over 70s once vaccinated? So the 20 year olds watch the over 70s going to the pub while the vaccines are coming in dribs and drabs?

You are absolutely correct. And to prevent the hospitals being overrun we should keep things closed down.

And we keep businesses shut in the meantime? For what?

I suggest opening everything after the over 70s are vaccinated.

My apologies. Misinterpreted - I can see the merit in that but I fear the masters will not so was thinking this as the intermediate solution.

Which do you think most people would prefer to see first, pubs for the over 70s or household visits?
