    Nomadland a front runner

Surprised to see Rosamund Pike at 16/1 for best actress - not a bad wager.

Promising Young Woman wins Best Film and Best Actress at Australian Academy International Awards

It's a wonder that wild mountain thyme didn't get a few nominations due to the fact it meets the requirements that most of the other nominees seemingly just needed, it was a film and it was released this year.

They really should have given this and all other film awards a year off. Kind of like football.

How are you surprised? Come on wild mountain thyme! They gotta fill their overtly bloated ceremony, and in this year of film famine it's gonna be more farcical than ever.

    Wolfwalkers nominated for best animation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,528 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Is that it, or are nominations being drip-fed?

Arracht was in the mix for foreign language film, I think?

ETA I see it wasn't nominated.

All the nominations are out, list here: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-list-of-nominees-updating-live

Fingers crossed for Wolfwalkers, really loved that film and it’d be a well deserved win.

Delighted to see Minari feature prominently. Haven’t seen Nomadland yet, mind you.

Disappointed to see First Cow and Never Rarely Sometimes Always largely ignored. Was the kind of weird year you’d hope films like those could break through.

The first time in Oscar history more than one woman has been nominated for best director, apparently. A sad statistic, and hopefully a first step towards a more equal representation in the future.

Soul is a shoe in, did Wolfwalkers even get a US release? I do wonder how that studio keeps going; like laika their output doesn't seem to set the box office on fire (AFAIK)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,716 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

It did get a small US release, and due to get re-released shortly AFAIK. Plus there was a global Apple TV+ launch.

That Apple deal certainly was a nice financial boon for them I'm sure. They'd also get a fair bit of funding from the likes of Screen Ireland - much-needed to support less commercial projects. They also have a deal with Netflix for their upcoming project, and have made some more commercial fare such as Puffin Rock. They're not rolling in it I'd imagine, but have got enough support to keep doing what they're doing for now thankfully.

Netflix have yet to win a Best Picture gong, right? You wonder if Mank is their best bet yet. The Academy love movies about Hollywood and the movie industry, and with David Fincher it wouldn't be an especially egregious choice either.

Amazingly, I haven't watched one of the nominated films, so have no frame of reference for those nominated elsewhere.

I'd say the Oscars, like the Emmys, will be in for some shocking viewing figures this year.

Soul will appeal far more to the American academy judges. It would be great to see Wolfwalkers win but just not going to happen.

Agree. One of the most moving films I've seen and tackles what must be a deeply terrifying experience for anybody to go through with incredible inventiveness. Hopkins absolutely nails it and the last moments are some of the saddest I've seen on film. Still thinking about it days after which is rare.

    Supporting cast is excellent too.

Who is the best actor (either gender) without an Oscar? I'm not talking either about who is 'due' or 'overdue' - I mean strictly on merit. I would suggest Ralph Fiennes, though I'm sure some would make a case for Steve Buscemi or John Turturro amongst others.

I had a quick google on this topic. There are some serious heavy hitters in there without an oscar - Fiennes, Glen Close, Edward Norton, Harrison Ford, Robert Downey Jnr, Cruise, Depp, Bill Murray, Michael Keaton.

If I had to pick one it would be Ed Norton - Primal Fear and American History X.

Probably too many. Helena Bonham Carter, Saoirse Ronan, Michelle Williams, Amy Adams, Brad Pitt. Alan Rickman was never even nominated?!?!?

Who’s the worst actor to have won? Eddie Redmayne?

I haven't seen Hillbilly Elegy, but Glenn Close has a serious body of work to never have won an Oscar.
Also in that movie, I'd have Amy Adams near the top of the list for best actors/actresses never to win one. I'm baffled how she wasn't even nominated for Arrival or Nocturnal Animals in 2016.
Michelle Williams is usually very reliable (four noms suggests as much), so seems overdue.
Jake Gyllenhaal has put in some serious efforts in his career as well with Prisoners, Nightcrawler, Brokeback Mountain and more...

Cuba Gooding Jr has to be a contender for worst winner.
It was a fun performance in Jerry Maguire, but his acting credentials leave a lot to be desired.

i still like him but Harrison Ford has very little range as an actor , he was more of a movie star than an actor

like i said though i still like him

Not necessarily the worst actor, but Lee Marvin's win for the frankly baffling Cat Ballou (well named, it was cat) is really strange.

Robert Mitchum was never nominated, a travesty given his tour-de-force in Night Of The Hunter. Nobody would begrudge David Strathairn a win, quietly steals every movie he appears in.

    Ditto Magnolia.

As for the original question, it amazes me that Peter O'Toole never won (ignoring the honorary one).

Maybe it's cos he has never had a standout role but a sequence of supporting ones, but it's insane how John Goodman has never even had a single Academy nomination. Maybe it's that classic curse that "comedy" actors not seen as "proper" professionals, but the man consistently gives magnetic, barnstorming performances. 10 Cloverfield Lane was an amazing turn by the guy; he should have got a nomination for that one alone.

Good shout on Goodman. Fiennes should have at least been nominated for The Constant Gardener, and he was excellent in Spider too.

Really?? Tom Cruise was nominated 3 times and Bill Murray got his nomination for Lost in Translation. So they were within a whisker of an oscar.

These movies are often seen as obscure this year but I’ve seen more of these movies on streaming platforms than in cinema in normal years. I mean often you can’t even get to see the nominees in Ireland prior to the Oscars.

I would think Michael Fassbender is one this generation's best, Joaquin Phoenix finally won last year, I would also agree on Ralph Fiennes and maybe Woody Harrelson, he can do comedy and drama well

Cruise gets a lot of stick for his beliefs and love of action films, adrenaline junkie etc., but he can deliver dramatic performances too, hell he was great imho in comedy musical Rock of Ages and Tropic Thunder

Ill make a safe prediction, ratings will be the lowest in years :pac:

Backed Carey mulligan for best actress @5/4 favourite.
Would be fairly pissed if she doesn’t get it.
    Great movie ,great performance.
This will be lowest ratings years for the oscars everyone is just sick of the horse **** that goes with it.
Not many good films this year
