    Of course, I agree.

The wider point I was making is that you could open up low incidence counties to some degree - for example: even if it's to go to hairdressers etc. - for those counties for which cases were low.

And that's possible even with a 5km limit, worst case scenario.

It should never have been less than inter-county travel. 5km is some ridiculous arbitrary number pulled out of some FFG politicians arse.

ridiculous ..government should be encouraging people to get outside and go for walks runs for mental health at this stage....what is the population within 5k of phoenix park blachardstown castleknock city centre ect....all them people going to the same park doesnt seem to be an issue...why not encourage people to get in the car and go to some nice scenic areas further afield(less populated)...theres nothing open anyway (not that i agree with any business being closed at this stage of the game)..the 5k is a jokeshop anyway and most people are ignoring

All I want are the hairdressers atm. Just give us that so we can at least look half decent again

It's all nonsensical at this stage...city centre was packed again today, been that way for a few weeks now...shops may well have been open, at least give a lot of them a sporting chance of survival...numbers aren't been affected at all...absolute joke!!!

By an accident of geography I suppose, under the 5km rule I can go for a stroll through 3 counties but I couldn't under the county rule :D

When will we hear what happens on 5th April (I think the next date we'll have a review)?

I'm hoping that we can go to level 4 + hairdressers and barbers opening! given the way numbers are going that's the minimum I think they should do. Can't see how they can justify keeping lv. 5 for any longer given the progress being made on vaccinations for the vulnerable.

Just back from McDonalds drive-thru (outside of my 5KM but hey ho I am clearly a badass) and the queue was unreal. Two lines of traffic plus car-park stewards ushering them in. It's amazing what people are resorting to for their Saturday evening entertainment during lockdown.

Found it odd that they had signs plastered around the general industrial estate complex where McDonalds is located with other businesses that said "Picnics not allowed". It's great that they have their priorities straight.

You were going to McDonalds to exercise?

Its amazing the amount of folk who post on here who have no idea what they are talking about.

What I find astonishing is how blasé people are about the, what appears to be, indefinite suspension of ancient liberties. The government has taken everything from the people and they haven't send an end all to the suspension. People just assume that their freedoms will be restored. I'm not that confident that hey will. We shouldn't forget that these are fundamental freedoms. Yes, there is a virus out there, but these are fundamental freedoms. The government doesn't grant us freedoms.
We will get some of them back if for no other reason than a certain amount of freedom is necessary for economic activity that can be taxed.

But what if we never get all of them back?

This cuts to the core of the Jonathan Sumption "campaign" in the UK,and in the absence of a similar voice here,I'm happy for his viewpoint to reference here also.

These are SERIOUS leglislative manipulations, and one's which have been nodded through and extended since last Feburary.

What is notable is the reduction in Parliamentary Oversight in each juristiction, excused by the severity of the threat from the Virus.

Personally,I am FAR less concerned about COVID than about the ongoing and evolving use of Emergency Provisions of the 1947 Health Acts, particularly when used as they were in Cork today :(

    Fear really IS the Key.

One of Sumption's main points is the best method of ending these "Emergency" provisions is for the MAJORITY of people to simply ignore them.

That demands a LOT of people, deciding en-masse,that they have had enough, and moving on from that.

In societies such as ours, the State simply does not have enough manpower to enforce these regulations....UNLESS they go full-nuclear,and bring out the Military etc.

Whether or not this State is prepared to do this,is now potentially becoming an issue.

    Any thoughts ?

How big do you thing 'the military' is ? It is not even potentially becoming an issue.

Numbers aren't being affected by what? I can guarantee if everything opens now numbers will certainly be affected. They should definitely get rid of 5k, allow click and collect and construction to fully open NOW

Some say there is greater combined force, experience, and strength in the civilian populations of Tallaght and Finglas than there is in the standing Irish Army.

Given that the restrictions will all, or nearly all, be lifted in a few months, most people are prepared to hang on that long rather than risk fines/jail/whatever by openly defying them.

Plus if your campaign is going to succeed, the people you really need on board are the owners of pubs/restaurants/gyms etc. And they're about the very last cohort of Irish society to engage in 'civil disobedience'...

Nobody is saying lift the 5km limit.

We could keep that limit and still allow certain counties to open up sooner.

Or it could be modified to intra-county travel only for those counties; or a version of the above.

But treating Kerry the same as Offaly or Dublin is beyond all conception of reason.

If you look for reason, logic or solid scientific grounding in any of the nonsense rules dreamt up since last summer you're guaranteed to be left sorely disappointed

You will be sorely disappointed if you lack the specialist knowledge to understand the reason, logic, and solid scientific grounding, and that knowledge gap may prompt you to think it doesnt exist. But it does.

Does that include the deputy CMO?
He stated the other day there was no scientific reason for the 5km travel restrictions other than it was to stop people moving around. If you have anything scientific to back it up please share. I would be interested in reading it.

Quick question. Ive kinda tuned out of the threads here and most online discussion but reading the article about the demonstration in Cork today. It states numerous people were shouting 'Freedom' (none as good as Mel in Braveheart i bet) 'Truth' and 'Government Traitors'

Can anyone tell me what 'Truth' they are looking for and exactly how the Government have been treasonous?
