I find doing a fresh install and setting up from scratch has newer options when setting up but i use vix and flash online which is handy for me.

It probably be easier to flash online would you say and then restore my settings?

You could but sometimes things change which might have a bearing on restored content , usually your safe but if a rebuild happens it might not work.
Saving a backup before hand can be handy.

So flash image from a USB then and restore settings?

Yes ok. Remember any bugs on image might be transferred over.

If issues happen later then maybe reflash and no settings restore.

It's relatively easy to recover favourite bouquets etc from a backup image and just reinstall that if needs be.

The Tiviar is an older model by now and getting scarce. The Zgemma H7S is a better option IMO.
    Further info here

Ami I right in thinking this box also supports IPTV Services?

Yes within limits. You can get the likes of Youtube but not Netflix or Amazon as they are not licensed for Enigma boxes AFAIK.

Think we might have to get Gerry to fix that issue:eek::eek::eek::D:D:D

Not sure if atv supports plugins download?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭MenloPete

Better still, I'll load a new version, tomorrow. The only difference is that I updated E2iPlayer and it is now working on many sites.

Thanks for your work on the image NCM. I hope you get time to upload the latest update.

Sorry, I got caught up in other work, today. Home alone tomorrow, so I'll do my best.

Of course it does, all Enigma2 versions share the main code base.

You can get some IPTV Services, but not Netflix or Amazon, on the Tiviar. I think the reason is that it doesn't support HDCP.

There are reports that you can access Netflix via Kodi, on some other boxes.

That box is getting on now and can be tricky. I would suggest you get the zgemma H7S. I have both and the zgemma is streets ahead and cheaper.

World of sat was the favourite but with Brexit it can be more expensive but they will load an image, get openvix.

Satworld.ie have it but I'm not sure if they will load an image. They do the tiviar as well. here is the link.

To get real benefit out of the zgemma h7s get an ssd as well. With the zgemma there is a slot at back for the HDD but I could not get my normal 2.5 hdd to fit the slot.

    https://www.satworld.ie/zgemma-star-s.html

To flash box initially use the openvix with emmc recovery and that puts 4 partitions on box so you can try different images later. After a little play it all falls into place.

Thanks Very much for this. I ordered from amazon Germany and will have it by next Friday.. I'll have to load the image myself and install an SSD - shouldn't be too much of an issue. I'll let you all know how I get on - thanks again

I think the reason is that it doesn't support HDCP.

HDCP is baked into every HDMI chipset so the box supports it as do all HDMI devices.

Netflix and Amazon are not licensed for Enigma 2 , that's why you cant download apps for it , there are workarounds via kodi but even those are from hooky repositories and cant be relied upon to continue working in a stable way.

Android TV boxes such as the shield recently had a "purge" as it were , in order to continue having a valid license for netflix , amazon , disney etc. support for "other" popular IPTV apps has been pulled and they no longer work. ( official android boxes or any box hoping to run netflix et al must now be "Google widevine DRM" certified )

It was only a matter of time before they got stepped on anyway .

In Summary , the issue is not HDCP, the issue is Enigma 2 boxes have no DRM , and as long as that is the case there will be no official support for Netflix or similar.

For better, or worse, licenses don't tend to impact feature availability on Enigma2 boxes. It is linux based, and open source (GNU v2.0). Because it uses Python, there is a wide development community and many apps. The culture appears to be that, if it can be done, it will be done.

My reply was based on a detailed post on a technical forum some years ago, as to why the Netflix app was pulled from Enigma 2 boxes. My memory was that it was because there was no hardware encryption available at that time. :)

(You may be right in relation to HDCP always being baked in to chipsets, I wouldn't know. However, a lot of early HDMI implementations didn't support HDCP, regardless of chipset support. The Tiviar dates from 2013 and records all broadcast content unencrypted. Even with CAMs there is an option to decrypt encrypted content and store in the clear.)

Definitely right on HDCP and HDMI , HDCP has been mandatory in the spec since HDMI V 1.1 way back in 2003 , long before it became commonplace on consumer devices.
The Tiviar and every other device with HDMI must have it.

HDCP protects content at source , blu rays etc. and has nothing to do with "in box" encryption , that's a different animal.
Humax boxes and some sky boxes for example , uniquely encrypt content on a per box basis so that recorded content cannot be transferred from that box.

Linux being open source under the GNU license is both a good and bad thing.

Great that we have way more control over what the box can do in comparison to some more mainstream boxes out there

Bad in the sense that software players and steamers from the likes of Netflix and Amazon are not open source and will never officially be incorporated into anything distributed under a GNU license , as by default that means that they must also operate under that GNU license.

So yes , there are homebrew versions of these players , but are illegal and often rounded up and stopped and or sued.
They work only as long as its not too much of a hassle for the developers , as long as they can be bothered to put in the time and avoid trouble.

Long story short , Enigma 2 boxes will never be a one box solution sat receiver and streamer , they are a great TV receiver , with some flaky add-ons that may or may not be useful.

I suspect that the days of broadcast TV, as we know it, are coming to an end. For now, as you say, Enigma 2 boxes are a great TV receiver. It is the illegal bit that concerns me and is why I do not get involved in these areas. With illegality comes criminality and all that that brings with it - no thanks.

have everything backed up. Do you recommend to do a clean Install via a USB or flash online?

It really doesn't matter, whatever is easier.

In main EPG try channel +/- to move by page.
The zero button switches to previous watched channel. <> buttons under 7 or 9 shows more channel history
MENU>SETUP>USAGE & GUI>DISPLAY>DISPLAY OPTIONS allows you set the brightness of the front display.

Tried dimming via the settings you state but it doesn't do anything. I'm on OpenATV 6.4

With Enigma2, any version, you can only change the brightness of the text display, not the big, bright, buttons. If you revert back, temporarily, to Fortis OS, you can dim these.

Oh really? That's a pain. I can't even change the clock on the front to 12hr either. Nightmare

The quick fix is to cover the buttons with translucent tape.

Has anyone successfully loaded an IPTV provider to their box and EPG? I read loads on it, watched countless videos but I can't get it to work. Tried JediMakerXtream and IPTV Bouquet Maker and nada.

I just discovered that there is an app for the box called Air Tivi+

Is anyone using it or got it set up?

What does this offer that isn't already there in the WEBIF which works with any web browser?
