If antivaxxers won't vaccinate themselves for the good of society in general, why should society in general make any allowances for them?
Should we put them down, then? You know, up against the wall and all that?

The anti-vaxx crowd on here really are embarrassing
Ah now, let's not look too closely into your contributions and what you imagine an antivaxx person is! It's not someone who disagrees with you BTW.

Under 18s can't get them. Are they getting a free ride as well?

Hardly anyone has got it yet, so no, it’s a ridiculous question. But you know that.

When it is rolled out to under 18s, then yes, unless you are officially exempt.

Only in response to a ridiculous notion. Do you plan to have people show certificates to pop in for a Lotto ticket? U18 vaccinations are a long way away. It could even be next year.

Man in his 80s dying at home with covid. Has refused an ambulance (called by his nurse granddaughter) three times. His granddaughter (a nurse with covid experience) has been staying in the house to provide care but doesn't want to be making end of life decisions for her grandfather's care.

His Covid positive children are inviting his vulnerable siblings to a socially distanced prayer service in the garden tonight with his children and grandchildren (10 positive cases among children and grandchildren).

Spent my lunchtime convincing my mother she couldn't attend. When under stress people are struggling with making the right decisions.

Jesus that's bloody tragic. Awful situation for him and his family to be in

I think that sounds like a slight overreaction.

Whatever about the neighbours coming in for a nose or the local TD making an appearance; they have no excuse for ignoring the rules.

But when it's a close family member, notions such as keeping households separated and not hugging your family suddenly seem very insignificant and unimportant.

I applaud anyone who finds the strength to maintain social distancing and mixing rules in these situations, but I certainly won't judge anyone who can't help but hug their parent/child/sibling in the fog of grief.

    Mod:

Can we keep the vaccine discussion to a minimum, I know this is a megathread so there will be some overlap but there's no point in having seperate threads if this becomes a 'catch all' for everything

    Thanks.

Excellent, hoping for just below 4.0, but that's even better. 7-day at 4.2

    Yowza.

    7-day now at 4.17%

I was skeptical that we could break 4% average this week, but the decline appears to be accelerating. Positive swabs are now down 16% week-on-week.

This day last week was 645 swabs @ 4.66%

645 swabs last Tuesday. That’s a ferocious drop with low positivity too

Great to see. Wonder how much of a role vaccines are playing so far in reduced rate. Great to see either way.

Should be able to see in the HPSC figures the impact I hospitals and long term care settings. Was definitely coming through last week as you could see the difference between community and these settings.

Then at the weekend mass testing of a Dublin hospital uncovered just 4 cases

There has to be a negative in those figures somehow.

Was going to say that the vaccines are playing more of a role in reducing deaths for now and in the coming weeks will have an impact on cases.

But when you think of all the transmission in hospitals/Residential Care settings, the vaccination of HCWs and nursing home residents is clearly having an impact on cases already.

I think the UK and NI figures are also very good at the moment.

I think the UK might have the same or lower figures than Ireland at the moment. I suspect the UK will be the first euro country to see a reduction driven by the vaccine.

Off the top of my head around December health care workers were around 1 in 6 total cases. Now they are around 1 in 8 or 1 in 9.

As they were pretty much the first cohort vaccinated it's interesting to see. I wish I had the actual numbers.

Only 11,000 tests. If we did 33,000 tests, there'd be 1,269 cases, the highest since Feb 4th.

    How's that?

I believe Nolan mentioned last Thursday that the effect of 10 day tests on close contacts (a low positivity grouping) was starting to hit the positivity numbers last week and driving down the positivity rate artificially.

    Sorry for the negativity.

Great to see case numbers falling.
