Given how much the UK has been championed I was surprised to hear on the radio that WE have actually fully vaccinated a larger % of the population than they have. They have gone all in on the one dose.

Ireland is in level 5 until mid Summer regardless of the R number or vaccination progress here.

5th of April is not mid summer

This is the type of falsehood that characterises this thread. The cancer screening are cancelled because of Covid and because it is especially dangerous to ill people. Measures to control Covid will allow cancer services return to normal, yet many people here are opposing those measures, which shows that they don't give damn about cancer patients.

The sheer immaturity of many comments here is mind boggling. The government does not want the country closed, they want an end to this thing and when they achieve that then they will open things. A reasonable plan at Christmas was totally derailed by people taking the piss and by the introduction of the new variant which behaves differently. Consequently, the government does not give hard and fast information about what will happen in 6 months time as they do not know. They cannot know, as they cannot fully predict whether people will act responsibly, they cannot predict the evolution of a new virus and the virus manufacturers have already shown that they will renege on their commitments. By all means criticise the government for not having the legislation to control quarantine, or something else that they can control, but the pointless ranting about things they cannot control is both an insult to the many ill and bereaved people and it makes eejits out of the posters who post it.

Cancer screenings were cancelled because we cancelled them, not because of Covid.

700000 are unemployed because we forced business to close, not because of Covid.

We’ve added at least 30 billion so far to our national debt, not because of Covid.

We have chosen to do all of these things because we are too afraid to try and live with Covid.

The results won’t be pretty for the next few years. But at least we got to hide under the bed and suck our thumbs...

IRELAND'S Covid-19 lockdown is the strictest in Europe, and the fourth strictest in the world, a new study has revealed.

Experts at the University of Oxford have compiled together data from the pandemic responses of 180 countries around the globe.

Come 6th April you will still be here trying to justify another lockdown extension.

I think the UK was only a few down from us with their overall score. I will be watching how things unfold their with interest.

Edit: UK was second strictest in Europe

It's very likely to be in some sort of lockdown next winter. The question is will they still give people 350? Surely this has to end at some stage.

We are an island ffs with a tiny population and yet we win the prize for the longest lockdown country in Europe. What sort on egits are running the show?

MM "I know how hard it is".

No, you do not. You are not on €203-€350 pw, you are on about €5k pw. You are not struggling to pay your mortgage, you are not restricted in your movements, you have a job to go to every day to keep you sane, you have a massive pension to fall back on when things inevitably go tits up for you, you have multiple homes.

You haven't a fcuking clue how tough this is for many people.

The UK undoubtedly had their happiest day yesterday since this started, I was genuinely happy for them, and quite jealous, still am.

One day later the Irish, from my perspective anyway, have had their darkest day since March 2020.

I'm sitting here genuinely more confused and angry than I was at any stage in 2020.

For some perspective, I trawled through the internet this evening to find opinion on our "strategy" from foreign news media. Sky News were first up with their headline of "Irish to continue harsh lockdown for at east 6 more weeks", some comments underneath almost taking pity on us. Spanish reports again headlining with the strictness of our lockdowns and eventually came across some German article discussing why Ireland are suffering more than anyone else in the EU, their conclusion? No plan.

What has happened to our country.

I think having the fastest rise in cases in Europe after Christmas didn't help us

It’s over. It’s on a wind down. Highly effective vaccine data coming in, both in severity and transmission, 82% of adults done by June. Covid is soon to be no more. Or no more than a bad seasonal cold anyway except for the anti vaccine nutters. Now why not allow a few weeks to get the vulnerable vaccinated so everyone has a fair chance at summer.

If that was the messaging I would have no objection. But I dont believe thats where we are heading.

Only three weeks ago you were lamenting that it was a disgrace that people were sitting on their arse getting 350 a week while you were never better with your two jobs.

    What has happened to you?

Richard Boyd Barrett wants "near-zero" cases before re-opening schools. I have to laugh at this Toy Opposition.

    Stop misquoting me.

I was referring to the people who are happy to sit at home on the PUP, a lot of them aren't and are struggling to pay bills. My comments were in reference to those who supported restrictions because they're comfortable on the PUP, again, many are struggling on it.

Don't you dare twist my words.

You said they don't get free money in Italy, if I remember correctly. You also made it very clear that business is going well for you. I don't need to twist your words. You need to own them.

I think the messaging, from NPHET at least, is to prevent complacency setting in before enough of the vulnerable have been vaccinated. At current rates we will be well into the vulnerable under 65’s by April 5th.

The Living with Covid plan makes grim reading, barely anything to do until Level 3.
Weren't we able to do most normal things no bother from about July-November?
WTF is going on that now we must lockdown no matter what?

NPHET are been left in charge and our leaders are too cowardly to disobey them after what happened the last time

There is no way NPHET will recommend anything under level 3.5

What I said is they bought compliance with the €350, to an extent that is true, but some will struggle on it. Young people will be fine on it. Families not so much.

I didn't say it in a general sense.

Lastly, I do not own a business, I'm a PAYE worker and yes you're right, my job has seen it's best time over the last 12 months.

Some us have zero sympathy for other's plight, the old "I'm alright, Jack". I'm not a selfish prick, though.

That's a message pretty much everyone could get behind. Not the dross handed up today. Leaks to RTE about possible restrictions this winter etc etc.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

And then there is just the small question of coming to terms with the fact that our economy now has a few billion less to spend on caring for the vulnerable of tomorrow.

When fools elect fools this is what you inevitability end up with.

Useless fools creating a shambles because nobody wants to be responsible for anything.

Huge salaries and pensions with zero responsibilities an added bonus for total incompetence.

We should always do the exact opposite of what he says.
