Why present such a dichotomy of extremes as the only choices available? And if we waited until a few weeks before the entire nation was vaccinated to reopen then we would be waiting until September most likely, so yeah let’s not do that. I ....

Doesn't really matter what the numbers are. A lot here saying they want out of lockdown before people are vaccinated and regardless of the numbers.

So what exactly is it you're suggesting.

    1) We take the UK approach and announce that we hope to reopen everything 5 weeks before 100% of the adult population have been vaccinated (or at least offered a vaccine).

    2) We don't take the UK approach, we just reopen everything regardless of vaccination/infection numbers and hope for the best.

Just open up the f*cking place, we’ve had enough of this sh*t.....

Worth noting that lifting restrictions does not obligate anyone to do anything. People who consider the risk of socialising or being in shops intolerable for whatever reason would still be able to stay home and avoid those things as they have been for the last year.

Thanks, that's exactly where I was heading.

Just imagine for a second what it would be like knowing in the region of 5 million people are impacted by every single decision you made at work today. Now add onto that the additional pressure of a large chunk of that cohort berating you for every single element of those decisions. Seriously stop and think about that for a few minutes. How does that equate to your most pressured day at work/home ever?
    .
Well that’s a completely moot point if ever I’ve read one because I didn’t take up a job that serves the public and by its very nature, puts me in the firing line for a large degree of criticism. Berating and criticising politicians is hardly something new, and it’s a part of the job that is well known to them before they hold position. And if my days got to tough and too stressful I’m sure I’d find solace in wiping my tears on some €100 bills from my recent pay rise while the rest of those who I was elected to serve count the pennies

I am glad now that the effort I put into a proper response to your previous post wasn't wasted.

You absolutely nailed the points I was trying to make without it coming across as a general rant whatsoever.

Maybe they'll get it right for the vaccines. Up to now with Covid and Brexit they've been a shambles. Boris has been the epicenter for much of that. He's not dull I'll give him that.

He's not dull or stupid. His carefully crafted "bumbling buffoon" facade shrouds an adulation-seeking narcissist with serious daddy issues. But if his quest for recognition and adulation leads to the UK getting out of this mess earlier, then sure I think they'll take it and possibly even forgive his earlier blunders because of it.

So disappointed by the opposition parties we have in our country.

I watched the tonight show and Louise O'Reilly was on and it seemed she broadly agreed with everything the government has done bar the quarantining issue.

All she kept pointing out was the lack of clear communication by the government. Can these people not read the room??? Its no longer a communications issue but an issue of quality of life, alot of people like myself want to play a game of golf, meet a friend for a walk etc.

How can they see an issue with going 10k as opposed to 5k?
How can they see an issue with playing a game of golf over a walk in the park?
How can they not see what the current level of restrictions are doing to people?

I dont think I'll bother voting in general elections anymore...there's just no point

Anyway, if anyone out there is struggling your definitely not alone, this last few weeks/months have been soul destroying, reach out if your struggling, don't suffer in silence

    1) government are digging their own graves, opposition don't need to grind the axe into them.

    2) any sane opposition party doesn't want to be in the next government and be responsible for cleaning up the financial mess well be in.

No. What the UK government has done is treat its citizens like the adults they are and communicate honestly with them, setting out a clear plan for the end of restrictions alongside the conditions that need to be met in order for the rescinding of restrictions to continue.

I still observe that restrictions do not work as intended, but even so, clear communication about a path out of restrictions has the effect of giving people hope and ensuring more compliance. It also sends a clear message that the vaccine is considered effective, which will increase uptake and potentially expedite the phases of the path out of restriction.

Utterly bizarre that people would rather sneer at the UK for "PR" than point the finger at the shambles that's happening here, with vague waffle and Friday night leaks being the extent of the information given out about ending lockdowns.

There is a lot of the problem on this thread summed up in one word. Anyone who doesn’t always agree with the narrative being set on the thread is “sneering”. They are “lockdown merchants”. They are “living in fear”. “Curtain twitchers” or whatever other labels are used. It’s all about anger and put downs. Very little, “I believe you are wrong and here’s why”

Giving people the freedom of choice to make their own risk assessment. That's wild.

Of course there is anger, the government has rescinded our freedom indefinitely, and there's a cohort of citizens who are perfectly fine with that? and want more freedom taken away too?

100% agree on the right of people to make their own risk assessment. We did see what happens when people made their own risk assessments before Christmas though. "Sure twill be grand to go to that house-party, I dont have it", "sure twill be grand to meet my group of friends from 4 different households for a meal down the local food pub, we are not sick", "sure it will be grand for half the town to book into the local hotel so we can get pissed and watch the match, it is the All-Ireland after all","sure it will be grand for Tom, Mark and John to travel back from London when they are in the middle of a surge", " Sure twill be grand"

The regulars in this thread were excoriated, as dregs of society, for months on end, by a cohort now determined to see the UK’s roadmap fail. More so on the main thread.

    There’s something wrong with that.

I wish the UK the very best of luck, because we need them to succeed. This is our only shot at normality.

I now realise that virtue signalling has nothing to do with concern for others.

When you think about it, those most in favour of returning to normality, use life and survival rates to suppose their argument.

Those mostly in favour of restrictions, need death to support their argument.

Isn’t there an irony in that

Finbar, that's the epitome of playing the victim.

I'll address a few of your points from my perspective.

There are regulars on this thread from both sides of the argument and both were castigated by the other 'side' for their stance. I would argue that there's a sliding scale of people from one fella who wanted to let it rip, to a few who appear to want extended lockdowns. You and I are somewhere in between.
I'm certainly not determined to see the UK's (England's) roadmap fail but I think it's optimistic. If it's happening more so on the main thread, why bring it here? Have you posted this in the other thread too? If not, is there a reason why you brought it here instead?
I too, wish the UK every success but it's not 'our only shot at normality'.

Ah you just have to laugh at how pathetic we are.
Fair play to other countries for embarrassing us.

There's a pattern of playing the victim, I see.

We're not pathetic. I'm not embarrassed.

It's an historic time really, we are witnessing the collapse of FF and unless Fg manage a miracle and make Varadkar popular in and out of his party they could go the same way....this is FF's last Taoiseach, that much I am sure of!

This has been beyond a shambles, I suppose if you fill the higher levels of government with teachers and bureaucrats you get this mess...they haven't a hope of keeping the public on board with this attitude and the severe restrictions, they must think we are all idiots!

People said the same thing after the financial crash...

I can't believe there are people on these threads who actually want the UK's plan to fail, so death here is unacceptable but hoping for it to prove a point about incessant lockdowns it's OK?

The hypocrisy is disgraceful. Never thought I'd hear myself say it but we should be cheering and lauding the UK as pioneers for this bold plan, and believe me if you told me I'd be saying something like that a year ago I would have laughed in your face.

I haven't actually read anyone on this thread that wants England's plan to fail. Is this another one of those made up scenarios?

The big difference between the UK and here is that they appear to have had that adult conversation that I’ve mentioned several times now.

They are accepting that there will be some degree of Covid deaths even after vaccinating people. But also acknowledging that life and the economy needs to move on while it still can.

That was music to my ears to hear someone actually acknowledge that. Fair play to them for putting on the big boy pants.

Their plan is going to work. Covid dies off during the summer anyways. And when Autumn kicks in, they’ll likely have huge numbers vaccinated.

I think Boris Johnson is a clown. But fair play to him for treating his population with respect. Treating them as adults. Being clear and honest. Providing them with dates to work towards.

The point he made on deaths from this virus is one we need to wrap our heads around. We need to be able to accept a level of death from this virus, it’s not going away.

Just wait and see the sh1t show that’s gonna happen today over here.

theme of the tread is relaxation stuck in this country for another 2 weeks have home/business other side of the world where covid is dealt with by CT targeted testing and short area lockdowns they dont do anything like the testing we do and do not associate covid with a terminal illness which is all here about optics by test/death numbers per 100.000 most of europe same.
I am happy to close my door here at least for another year will miss that uplifting sweet smell of hash I have being getting around the city didnt notice before the nationwide incarsuration guess it done more for the dealers and supply.
angry nobody has challenged our excuse of a govt opp equally as bad but that what ye voted for so its monkeys you got.
The badly managed HSE people on trollies bosses can run rings around them to the detretement of our society/country.
To the dont come back comments, this time next month I will eat in a resturant, have a haircut go to a shopping mall and have a pint with friends bye and take care

Won't happen with the government bowing to nphets every wish.

Nphet are doctors. They want zero deaths if at all possible. That is their duty as doctors. I understand and respect that.

It is up to the government to weigh up that advice against the economic, social, and other costs to society. But they don't. Spineless and easier to pass the buck to nphet.

It's clear Boris and the UK government have weighed up the costs and decided the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the phew. Think Boris is a clown, but I respect him for making the big calls and leading. Something our politicians fail to do.

Saying people want it to fail is a bit much but there's a fair bit of expecting it to fail. I know Boris is full of hot air but given the speed at which they're vaccinating people I don't think the plan seems unrealistic at all.

I wonder why the OP seems to think there are people on the thread who want it fail then? Made up stuff again?

I agree Pen, there are edge cases on both sides of the argument but for the most part it seems everyone else wants an end to this. The differences being how we get there. For some it's a conservative approach, wait till we get the majority vaccinated and then take off the breaks. For others it's a case of easing restrictions quicker but still keeping control until we can completely open up. I think there's pros and cons for each way. However, my own belief is we should be back to L5 already with a view to moving to L4 on March 5th and review every 2/3 weeks afterwards.

Right now, the messaging seems to be that this severe level of restrictions is due to D'Variant and wanting to get hospital waiting lists down. Neither of which the general public have any effect on. Quarantining should have been brought in long ago if they were so worried about D'Variant. Hospital waiting lists were a disgrace before COVID, claiming to need a lockdown now to combat that it bonkers.

Anyhow, I hope it works out for England and the rest of the UK&NI, lord knows they've borne the brunt end of the stick for long enough.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Targeted tracing/testing local short lockdowns, total incarceration has stopped working if it did 14 days would show that how long it can take for symptom to show seems we have discarded that important detail placating the zero covid bunch has cost us all dearly
