CBS continues to tinker with its crowded spinoff bingo card with the possible addition of a third FBI series.

In the wake of news that the Eye network is shaking up the NCIS franchise with the exit of NCIS: New Orleans and the possible arrival of NCIS: Hawaii, Deadline reports that CBS has put into development FBI: International. The latest offshoot, which would focus on the FBI’s global operations, would join mothership series FBI (currently in its third season) and spinoff FBI: Most Wanted (currently in its second season).

The Celebrity Dating Game

ABC will once again play matchmaker — this time to the stars — by way of a freshly ordered Dating Game reboot.

The Celebrity Dating Game has snagged an eight-episode order at the Alphabet Net, with New Girl alum Zooey Deschanel and Grammy-winning singer Michael Bolton set to host.

In this star-studded version of the classic game show, single celebrities will serve as the contestants and will choose a date from a hidden panel of three bachelors and/or bachelorettes, based on their answers to the celebrity’s questions. Through clues, questions and parody performances from Bolton, the panel will have an opportunity to guess the celebrity’s real identity (which viewers at home will be able to see).

George R.R. Martin & Kalinda Vazquez Developing Adaptation Of Roger Zelazny’s Sci-Fi Novel ‘Roadmarks’ At HBO

The Game of Thrones creator is exec producing a TV adaptation of Roadmarks from sci-fi novelist Roger Zelazny, which is development at the WarnerMedia cable network.

The adaptation comes from Kalinda Vazquez, who has written on Star Trek: Discovery and was a co-exec producer on Fear The Walking Dead. Vazquez, who was named after a character from the original Star Trek TV series, will write, exec produce and showrun the adaptation.

The book was written in the late 1970s and published by Del Rey in 1979. It is about a highway that can travel through time, linking all timelines and places together for the very special people who discover it. Some might use it to explore the vast mysteries of the world, but for others…the road might be their only hope to survive, rewrite life-altering mistakes, and create a better future for themselves and the ones they love.

Marvel Studios Gets The Punisher and Jessica Jones Rights Back From Netflix

The live-action rights to Jessica Jones and The Punisher have reverted back to Marvel Studios after a multi-year tenure with Netflix. The characters were the subjects of tremendously popular shows, along with Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. When Disney had revealed plans to launch their own streaming service which would rival Netflix, Netflix canceled all of their Marvel titles in a move which shocked fans of the successful properties. The rights to the characters remained with Netflix for two years after they were cancelled and that window has now officially closed, meaning Jessica Jones and Punisher are now eligible to used by Marvel Studios.

J.J. Abrams’ ‘Subject to Change’ Ordered to Series at HBO Max

HBO Max has given a series order to “Subject to Change,” a new drama created by J.J. Abrams. Jennifer Yale is set to serve as showrunner on the project from Warner Bros. Television and Abrams’ Bad Robot.

The series follows a desperate college student who signs up for a clinical trial that is the starting point for a reality-bending adventure.

“It’s been incredible fun weaving this rather insane yarn with Jenn, and I am grateful to her and everyone at HBO Max for the opportunity to bring this story to life,” Abrams said.

“Subject to Change” is the second Abrams-created show to land a series order from a WarnerMedia platform since Abrams signed a massive overall deal with the company in 2019. “Demimonde,” another Abrams original, is already in the works at HBO proper.

The 39 Steps

Benedict Cumberbatch will star in the Anonymous Content limited series update of the classic thriller The 39 Steps. Series is created by The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith and directed by Edward Berger. Berger teamed previously with Cumberbatch on Patrick Melrose, and was a director and executive producer of the just completed Showtime limited series Your Honor.

Anonymous Content takes the limited series to networks and streaming platforms immediately.

Gaslit Julia Roberts & Sean Penn-Fronted Watergate Drama Lands At Starz.

Watergate drama Gaslit, which is based on Slate’s Slow Burn podcast, has landed at Starz, though it has lost a couple of names along the way.

The network has greenlighted the UCP-produced series starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn. Joel Edgerton, who was set to star and direct, no longer is attached, and neither is his brother Nash Edgerton.

The pair join Armie Hammer, who was originally attached to the project, but also exited. The project was first unveiled in February 2020. These two roles, Hammer was set to play White House Counsel John Dean and Edgerton was set to play G. Gordon Liddy chief operative of Richard Nixon’s “Plumbers” unit, will now be recast.

Matt Ross, who has directed feature films including Captain Fantastic and 28 Hotel Rooms, now will direct and exec produce. Robbie Pickering, who has worked on series including Mr. Robot and Search Party, remains as showrunner.

‘Twisted Metal’ Series From ‘Deadpool’ Writers in the Works at Sony Pictures TV, PlayStation Productions

A live-action series adaptation of the “Twisted Metal” PlayStation game franchise is officially moving forward, Variety has learned.

Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are developing a series based on the “Twisted Metal” vehicular combat games, the first of which was released in 1995. It was originally reported in 2019 that Sony was interested in developing a series based on the games.

The new series is described as an action comedy, based on an original take by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writers behind the “Deadpool” films and “Zombieland.”

“’Twisted Metal’ is one of the most beloved franchises from PlayStation,” said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions. “We are thrilled to have such a great team working on bringing this iconic game to life for the fans.”

Outer Range centers on Brolin’s Royal Abbott, a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness. Lauria — best know for his series-regular stints on Friday Night Lights and Kingdom — will recur as a member of the Abbotts rival family the Tillersons. His Trevor is the eldest of the three Tillerson brothers and the temperamental workhorse of his family. He takes out his frustrations on his neighbors, the Abbotts, and his aggression manages to move the simmering feud to a rolling boil whenever he crosses paths with an Abbott.

Ronald D. Moore Developing Magic Kingdom TV Universe Projects At Disney+

For All Mankind executive producer Ron Moore is bringing the Magic Kingdom Universe to Disney+.

Moore is developing multiple TV projects at the streaming service which will be set at Disney’s Magic Kingdom, sources close to the situation tell Deadline.

Moore will write and executive produce the first project, titled The Society of Explorers and Adventurers,
a series from 20th TV set in the Magic Kingdom Universe, where the themed lands and characters of the Disney parks and classic films all actually exist in another reality.

Moore also is said to be working in close collaboration with the Disney Imagineering Team on other projects that would be the first part of a universe similar to Marvel but set in the Magic Kingdom. Moore would oversee the entire franchise.

Amazon Prime Video and Juventus soccer club have announced a new Italian Amazon original behind-the-scenes documentary series, “All or Nothing: Juventus.”

The series will follow the popular Italian soccer club through the current 2020/21 season, and will stream on Amazon Prime Video worldwide later this year. It will take viewers on a behind the scenes journey with the club covering all of the key events, including the arrival of Andrea Pirlo as the club’s new head coach. The cameras will be inside the Allianz Stadium, their training facilities in Turin and, away from the pitch, the series will focus on the unique aspects of the Club Bianconero [“white and black”] and of its identity, which is rooted in Italian culture and history, but looking to the future.

‘Frogger’ Competition Series Hops to Peacock

The classic 1980s video game “Frogger” is getting a modern-day competition series upgrade at Peacock.

The hour-long “Frogger” will feature 12 obstacle courses — or what the streamer is calling “crossings” — that are individually physically demanding challenges based on the original video game, as well as some other nostalgic favorite games. These challenges range from dodging traffic to leaping over snapping alligators to hopping over hungry hippos. However, the show is not solely physical: contestants will also have their strategy and problem-solving smarts tested with these challenges.

Additionally, the world of the “Frogger” series is being designed to be “wild and whimsical,” filled with “all the simple but challenging elements of the mega-hit” game franchise on the small screen.

Amblin to Adapt Walter Mosley’s ‘Easy Rawlins’ Books for TV

Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins will be sleuthing his way back to the screen. Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television has closed a deal to develop and produce a television series adapted from Walter Mosley’s bestselling gritty historical fiction mystery series starring Rawlins, one of literature’s most popular Black investigators.

The drama, based on Mosley’s fifteen novels and collection of short stories centered on the WWII army veteran turned hard-boiled private eye, will be set in 1950’s Los Angeles. Per the logline, the show will honor the great traditions of storytelling in the detective genre, while also exploring the racial inequities and social injustice experienced by BIPOC and other non-white people.

“Stomp the Yard” and “The Losers” director Sylvain White is attached to executive produce the Easy Rawlins series and is also set to direct the pilot episode. Amblin Television co-presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey (“The Americans, “Haunting of Bly Manor”) will also executive produce with Mosley, his producing partner Diane Houslin for their company B.O.B FilmHouse, Inc., and “Resident Evil” producer Jeremy Bolt of JB Pictures. White worked with Amblin on “The Americans.” Alex Maggioni, senior VP of television, will oversee the development of the project for Amblin, alongside Frank and Falvey.

Ray Donovan” is getting a feature length film continuation at Showtime.

Following the show’s surprising cancellation after seven seasons last year, star Liev Schreiber will return in the title role, with series stars Jon Voight and Kerris Dorsey also returning. Schreiber is co-writing the script with series showrunner David Hollander, with Hollander also directing. Hollander and Schreiber will also executive produce along with Mark Gordon, Bryan Zuriff, and Lou Fusaro.

The film picks up where Season 7 left off, with Mickey (Voight) in the wind and Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. It will also weave together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years ago. Production on the film is tentatively scheduled to begin later this year in New York.

Rugrats’ Revival With Original Voice Cast to Debut on Paramount Plus

An all-new “Rugrats” CG-animated series is slated to premiere on streaming service Paramount Plus (née CBS All Access) in 2021, announced Nickelodeon at ViacomCBS’ investor day.

Set to reprise their roles are stars E.G. Daily (Tommy), Nancy Cartwright (Chuckie), Cheryl Chase (Angelica), Cree Summer (Susie) and Kath Soucie (Phil and Lil). Nickelodeon Animation Studio is producing the revival, which promises to follow the toddlers as “they explore the world and beyond from their pint-sized and wildly imaginative point-of-view.”

The original “Rugrats” series, which debuted in 1991 on Nickelodeon, ran for nine seasons across 13 years, earning four Daytime Emmys and six Kids’ Choice Awards.

'The Twilight Zone' Canceled at CBS All Access

The episodic anthology from host/narrator Jordan Peele ran for two seasons on the streamer and was not included in Wednesday's presentation to investors as the platform is rebranded Paramount+.
The Twilight Zone will not return on CBS All Access when it is rebranded next month as Paramount+.

The anthology from exec producers Jordan Peele and Simon Kinberg has been canceled after a two-season run on the ViacomCBS-backed platform.

"Jordan Peele, Simon Kinberg and the entire production team truly reimagined The Twilight Zone for the modern age," Paramount+ head of programming Julie McNamara said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "They upheld the classic series' legacy of socially conscious storytelling and pushed today's viewers to explore all new dimensions of thought-provoking and topical themes that we hope will resonate with audiences for years to come."

The Twilight Zone was rebooted as an individual episodic anthology in late 2017 as the individual episodic anthology looked to pick up where the beloved Rod Serling-created series left off with a modern reimagining of the original drama. In addition to exec producing, Peele served as its host and narrator.

All told, Peele's Twilight Zone ran for two seasons and 20 episodes and wrapped its run last summer when CBS All Access abandoned its weekly rollout to a binge model. The series, from CBS Studios and Peele's Monkeypaw Productions, attracted an all-star cast including Steven Yeun, K umail Nanjiani, Rhea Seehorn, Sanaa Lathan, Adam Scott, Billy Porter, Jurnee Smollett and Chris Meloni, among others.

News of Twilight Zone's ending comes as CBS All Access will relaunch as Paramount+ on March 4. The cancellation comes after ViacomCBS executives Wednesday presented their vision — and a mountain of programming announcements — for the new service. While the original Twilight Zone lives on the platform, a new season was not part of the plan for subscription service.

Bulletproof co-creator and The Sweeney director Nick Love is developing a Troubles-set TV series with DJ Pete Tong.

Trouble, which is being lined up as a returning series, will be set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, starting in 1989 at the height of The Troubles at the same time that dance music was also taking hold. It will tell the story of how a generation of kids discovered dance music and ecstasy and how the rave scene offered an escape from the tough social and political climate.

Love is currently writing the pilot and will direct and show-run. Executive producers will be Pete Tong, Alan Moloney and Tony Cochrane. Maloney, producer of movies such as Albert Nobbs and Mary Shelley, and Keira Knightley mini-series Neverland, will produce for his Parallel Films banner.

Endeavor Content will handle sales. Tong will curate the music.

Paramount+ Builds On ‘Waco’ With ‘American Tragedy’ Anthology Series

Paramount+ is building on its scripted mini-series Waco with a new anthology series.

The streamer is launching American Tragedy, which will tackle complicated moments in true crime.

Waco, which aired in 2018 on the Paramount Network, was a six-part series that dramatized the 1993 standoff between the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Branch Davidians in Texas.

It starred Taylor Kitsch, Michael Shannon, Andrea Riseborough, Paul Sparks, Rory Culkin, Julia Garner and Melissa Benoist.

'Transformers' Animated Series Set to Roll Out at Nickelodeon, Netflix

Both shows are produced by Hasbro's Entertainment One, as is a new 'My Little Pony' series at the streamer.
Entertainment One, the entertainment arm of toymaker Hasbro, is doubling up on Transformers animated shows.

The studio has landed new Transformers series at both Nickelodeon and Netflix. EOne will also produce a My Little Pony animated series for Netflix that will continue the story of a feature film set for release on the streamer later this year.

Both Transformers series will be aimed at younger viewers. Nick's untitled show — the ViacomCBS network's first in the long-running animated franchise — received a 26-episode order. It will follow a new species of Transformers who are looking for their place among the Autobots, Decepticons and the human family that adopts them. The show comes from executive producers Ant Ward (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Nicole Dubuc (Transformers: Rescue Bots) and developer and co-exec producer Dale Malinowski. Nickelodeon Animation Studio produces with eOne.

"As soon as I read the creative concept, which at its core is about family, I knew we absolutely had to tell this story with our good friends at eOne and Hasbro," said Nickelodeon Animation president Ramsey Naito. "The series will tell a reimagined story featuring both original characters and fan-favorites for a whole new generation of kids and families. The creative team at Nick, overseen by Claudia Spinelli, senior vp animation development, can’t wait to get started on building this new world."

Netflix, meanwhile, has ordered 20 episodes of Transformers: BotBots, based on the toy line of the same name. The comedic show will follow the title characters, who disguise themselves as small, everyday objects at a mall before transforming at night to make mischief. Kevin Burke and Chris "Doc" Wyatt (Transformers: Rescue Bots Academy) executive produce.

"We are delighted to partner with Netflix to bring an all-new Transformers story to life and explore a whole new universe with BotBots," said Olivier Dumont, president family brands at eOne. "Transformers storytelling has expanded into so many new avenues, and we can't wait to surprise both existing fans and new fans coming to the franchise for the first time with these fun bots who are definitely more than meets the eye."

Transformers: BotBots is the second original animated series in the franchise to land at Netflix, following the anime-inspired Transformers: War for Cybertron, which is aimed at older viewers. The streamer also carries several other animated shows in the franchise.

The CG-animated My Little Pony series will build on the events of the movie, in which the pony world of Equestria loses its magic. The show will follow the further adventures of Sunny Starscout, an idealistic Earth Pony, and her friends.
