Indo saying L Cert only 1st March followed by 5tj years only before Easter
Irish times saying similar but also J Certs to join fifth years

So you can be safe to assume it’s LC only March 1st and a lot won’t return until after Easter if they do at all ......

Why would they prioritize JC though seeing as that exam is cancelled.

You don't know that, there are viruses that hospitalise children every year. RSV being one that most parents will have experience of.

    https://m.independent.ie/irish-news/health/surgeries-cancelled-in-three-childrens-hospitals-due-to-surge-in-respiratory-illness-38725189.html

Unfortunately children are hospitalised every year with flu or other respiratory illnesses. It doesn't necessarily mean they are all on oxygen, that's jumping to conclusions.

What's worrying is the large number over a short space of time while we are in apparent lockdown.

    Hopefully they recover quickly.

These 37 are hospitalised with covid in the last 2 weeks, any other illnesses are irrelevant

As I said the high number of cases during that short period is concerning, but I'm pointing out the fact that children in hospital with a respiratory virus is not rare.

Any other illnesses are irrelevant? Sounds a bit like something NPHET might say.

RSV is the second largest cause of death in children under one year of age worldwide (second only to malaria). Hardly irrelevant.

They are all irrelevant to this conversation, we are not talking about flu or RSV, this is a discussion on covid, which supposedly to many here does not effect children much at all, yet 37 under the age of 12 where hospitalised with it in the last two weeks.

If they are on oxygen it’s a long road for recovery .
I can tell you that from a friends recent experience . Still not recovered after two months.

    This might help with context.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/influenza-41-child-deaths-recorded-over-past-decade-1.4348133?mode=amp

I don't want to quote the figures again you can look it up if you like. Risk to children appears miniscule, road travel apears more dangerous. This is not the Spanish flu.

Around 18,000 children under 15 have been confirmed with Covid since the start. Approx 300 of those required hospitalisation.

With the increase in community transmission over the past couple of months there has been increase in cases (and resulting hospitalisations) across every age group.

The risk that the disease poses has not changed dramatically, just the sheer levels of transmission, which thankfully is improving all of the time.

My sister tested positive for covid over Christmas. Was completely asymptomatic for the 14 days after. She was only diagnosed because she was a close contact - her child picked it up in school. She developed severe problems with her sight mid January. She has prolonged periods of blurred vision and the doctor cannot explain it. Needless to say I'm terrified of going back to school as she and I have the same genes. Your sight is one thing you can't mess around with imo.

That's awful, does the Doctor think it's covid related?

I presume they will want to do something similar to last year with regard to assessing them?

I just looked through the proposed LC plan. Secondary school will be finished a week earlier now for summer for all students 28th May.

Looks like 6th years who opt for predicted grades will finish on the 14th May. Well the official line is “The closing date for the receipt of student work that can be taken into account for the purposes of the SEC-Accredited Grade process will be 14th May, 2021”.

“Schools will close to all students from 28th May, 2021 to allow for the conclusion of the work (including alignment) necessary at school level within the process.”

Ah here - will you go away with your pesky facts and logic.
No doubt they are punishable by some fine or other in the "new normal"

Hundreds of thousands of children are suffering socially, mentally and in some cases physically on a daily basis.

Just as schools are about so much more than academic education, public health is about much more than an absence of illness - despite what NPHET seems to think.

I am wondering about reopening Schools in the context of what Dr. Ronan Glynn is saying in this Article.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2021/0219/1198040-coronavirus-ireland/

I had thought that there would have been an announcement maybe today but apparently now it is next week.

Another weekend of leaks and kite flying it is so. Presumably we will hear about the plan through a MM interview With the Irish Sun at midnight after the meeting . Leaves schools a few days to put in place and communicate a plan . Disgusting

I thought it was supposed be a decision next week anyway and the bare bones of March 1 are already there.

There is a big difference for primary schools between Infants only , infants and 1st Or infants and 1st and 2nd
There is a big difference for parents too with children in 1st or 2nd .
Why did the Taoiseach think that a 10pm interview with a tabloid paper In which he made comments about things that it seems have not been agreed was a good idea I’ll never know

Absolutely idiotic and this clown is supposed to he a leader.... all it has done is made people say "**** this, I'm doing my own thing now"

As a parent of a primary school child and a preschooler. I will be waiting to see how any potential opening plays out tbh.

The far side of easter will do. Not comfortable with the idea of a return as a kind of experiment.

The impact of the mooted return should be more obvious by then.

I’m suspecting online learning will face a huge test in weeks to come
The majority of year groups know full well they are out until after Easter
JC is off, will be interesting to see engagement levels

The far side of Easter is fine for us too tbh. 5th Class and 2nd Year here.

Oh, it's his version of what they call taking out the trash, where bad news is released when people are not looking, but it's usually on a Friday night. No Dail on Fridays means he doesn't get questions till next week!

R O'Gorman on RTE radio 1 saying Junior to 2nd class back in first phase 1st March, other years two weeks later (with the caveat to be confirmed next Tuesday).

Also more or less confirming that bar 5th and 6th years at PP, remaining years won’t returns until mid April

Rodric O'Gorman on Today with CB. More or less said JI to 2nd on the 1st of March, 3rd to 6th on the 15th. Majority of second level students after Easter.

    Absolutely disgraceful
The effects of this will be utterly devastating

If he is able to go on CB today and say all that, then why not announce that today properly then ?

Not his place to be the one announcing it but must have been given the okay to give that much detail.

Surely TYS won’t be back before Easter
All these conflicting leaks are so annoying

Absolutely agree. Honestly I dunno why I'm getting so stressed over this but my stress levels are through the roof at the moment. I Absolutely hate the unknown!! If I know for certain what's happening then I can make plans but how can you make plans if you don't know what's actually going to happen and what's just rumour

Even the last few posts are given different interpretations of what he said !
    LC and JC
LC , JC and 5th years
LC, JC , 5th and TYS
    Which is it ?

I didn't make any mention of TYS. They weren't even mentioned on the piece on CB.
