Has the option of teaching through July and August been discussed to make up for the lost time?

Presumably kids can be back at school by June, it would make sense to use that time to get things back on track.

    On here? Yes, repeatedly.

    My kids have missed nothing.

    That is not true.

Schools should not be open over the summer because some parents didn’t bother engaging with the online programme and then push to expect the schools to cover lost material. If they are, it should be voluntary and involve extra pay as teachers have been working over the last 6 weeks.
I really think schools should be back after mid term. It’s a mistake to keep dragging this out.
Interesting username - are you in the construction industry by any chance? They usually love to teacher bash in my experience while taking cash payments themselves for their income and not pay any tax.

    Academic wise they haven't.

By whom? This thread is a joke. It’s occupied mostly by trolls/disgruntled parents with very few actual educational issues being discussed. I think a new forum for education with a new charter should be established.

Not being mean but maybe go have a look. Already there.

I find that difficult to believe.

School is more than learning the 3 r's. The socialisation and interaction with peers is essential. The ability to build relationships and friendships, to deal with setbacks.

I'm guessing you are a teacher? Lucky for your kids. They have certainly fared better than my 4.. All children are missing out here, schools need to open ASAP. As does sport and other extra curricular activities that help with their development.

Hence why I said academics. Sports is nothing to do with us. No sports for kids until June/July at the very earliest.

Can't wait to get back out training with the team I manage.

Maybe he's a Beatles fan? But hey don't pass up an opportunity to randomly 'bash' construction workers.

Almost a year without matches of and months without training, I fear a lot won't return after.

Especially the teen players, sad really because its the most important age for kids to have an outlet and like minded peers, never mind the physical and mental wellbeing aspects.

“Hey teachers get into school right now and do your days work and then do extra after school activities for free so my kids can develop” is what I hear there.

As an aside just an example on that here how it goes in my school for “extra curricular”.

Choir - during school hours (female teacher)
Soccer - mostly (95%) during school hours (male)
    Athletics - during school (male)
Gaelic Football - after school (male)
    Hurling - after school (male)

In our school male teachers make up 30% of the staff yet do 80% of the extra curricular.

    Just a statistical observation.

People seem to have a really warped sense of what was allowed and when things finished. We played two finals at the start of October and trained 5 times during December. Training for underage was only pulled then.

We have weekly zoom checkins with our gang just to see how they are. They also have twice weekly online S&C and also have to upload to strava two 5km runs a week for which we set what we want done within them.

I share the concern for older players. Our teams trained anytime it was allowed but as we live in one county and their club is another my 2 lost out on additional time when different counties had different restrictions and also before the 5km rule was changed for kids training. They haven’t played a game in almost a year. I actually feel the lack of team sports has affected them more than school closures

Seriously how haven't they payed a match in nearly a year. We played in and won three competitions once things opened up again. Our county wasn't unique.

Maybe it depends on the club and whether they saw any value in continuing or allowing training to occur. We did and on the final night that we trained there were u10/11/12/13/15/17 teams out. Where there is a will, there is a way.

I had a 'discussion' with a lad on twitter about this over the weekend. Lad was on moaning about no training allowed since September. That wasn't true. Training for underage teams was only pulled just before Christmas. Matches were allowed up to early October. Turns out his club stopped teams training once they were knocked out of their competitions or the blitz had been held. Silly, silly attitude.

My son played his last game on September 11th, u8 soccer in Dublin. If they're not allowed play until June/July, that's the guts of a year without games. Trained up until Christmas tho.

Just om the PUP posts from yesterday. Am I missing something here. Myself and my wife could be paid two times 300€ a week to do nothing instead of the 5-6 hours each a day we do on computers. Plus my own kids spend most of the day watching tele when we're doing this. I don't see the downside. I can easily survive with 2400€ a month,

Apologies I was wrong, the older lad managed 1 or 2. The younger none

It was all covid related in one way or another. The Reduction in numbers allowed meant the club couldn’t host as many games as usual. The 5km travel, clubs not being able to field a team if players were sick or close contacts. It’s had a terrible knock on effect.

I'm more talking about all the people saying put the teachers on the PUP as if it's punishment. I'd love it once I can take my job back up like most people on PUP should.

government says today no sign of hotels, restaurants, pubs, cafes even opening for many months as it is not safe and these establishments are not compatible with the virus - mass vaccination has to take place first

schools can start opening next week lol

You only qualify if you have engaged with your employer and leave/remote working etc is not granted.

I would assume only 1 parent would qualify.

The highest rate of PUP is €350.

Schools are safe places though!!!! Normal rules don't apply!

But in all seriousness we had no cases in my school from September to December. We had a couple of kids out due to being close contacts but that was it. Attendance in my class has never been as good in all the years I've been teaching. No bugs at all going around. Once the virus is suppressed in the community schools should be okay. But they need to look hard at counties with high rates. But there are alot of countries with very low rates right now.

Don’t forget that PUP is taxable income. So if schools open and you’ve no excuse to be off work and then earn more than the upper tax band limit, half (ish) of your PUP will need to be repaid in tax.

This was news to me too, I'd much rather not tie myself in knots about childcare if I am allowed to now get PUP apparently.

You can only get it if your flexible work/leave has been turned down. You should get it in writing.

I am not sure of your calculations tbh?
I would say you would have a small tax liability. You have a cut off point of €600+ a week and a tax credit of €33 (if they remove employee tax credit) or €67 per week.
The PUP scheme finishes on 31st March.
