yeah like its so simple its nearly scary, like the Emperors New Clothes. When over 70s are vaxxed i fully support this tactic, no testing/no cases. what do they do when we are down to 4 or 5 cases per day? if your not sick dont goo near covid testing

It's not surprising to see the government pivot towards uber caution after the reckless reopening at Christmas. I suspect they are concerned with the fact that 1200 people died as a result of their decision to go against NPHET's advice, and in this case Varadkar is managing his image to reflect a more cautious and considered approach. In actual fact, it is pathetic to speak of another year of social restrictions for a virus for which we have 3,4 vaccines and which other countries have shown you can contain.

so this is an interesting revelation for me. I'm well aware of what the headline of the Irish Times article said.

He wants a lost year, not a lost decade.

He said the restrictions will last well into 2022. And we could be facing a 'fourth wave' next winter.

That is a lost year to me. Just like 2020 and now 2021.

Yeah basically we are half-open in the summers and closed in the spring, autumn and winter. For two to three years.

They know people would be outside in the summer anyway thanks to the sunshine. They're 'allowing' you to meet your friends outside this summer. Gee thanks

Leo it seems just can’t help himself at this stage and there all tripping themselves up to keep the fear mongering going.I’ve said it a few times the sooner this country loses the ability to borrow money the sooner this hypnosis of lockdowns foreva will be ended.

But you will be able to do a lot of things you can't now.

They got absolutely slated for the easing at Xmas.

They won't give the people another chance to do the same.

I'm not saying I agree but I can see why they are covering their arses this time around.

Operative word right there..... And restrictions could be as simple as contact tracing in restaurants and pubs....

I'm looking forward to the summer to get out of lockdown for a while, but I really hope they get the vaccine rolled out faster and get the vulnerable groups vaccinated quickly.

We could be in a much better position if this occurs.

Its all to cover up the massive failings of the HSE.

No other country had to shut down construction for example.

Most of the last 12 months we had the harshest lockdown in Europe.

The construction sector was warned that it needed to take more precautions before it was shut down. There were too many outbreaks linked to construction.

I don't disagree with you that the restrictions are to cover up the failings of the HSE.

The government here are in control right now in this early phase of the virus

Post-vaccination they'll have much less say as we co-operate at european and world level on virus control

Restrictions here will be influenced by relaxation of restrictions elsewhere

This is key, it will get to a stage when the vulnerable goups will be the ones boozing at the bars and the young awaiting vaccination will be getting sick but nothing more than a bad flu for the majority, that will be a day I look forward to.

NPHET give nothing but doom and gloom, the government ditto and most of all the media. At this point they could announce 5 deaths or 500 and I'd just check the football scores, see what's on Netflix or get a classic off the bookshelf that I haven't read for a while.
