I'm sorry to have to report that really grim news. It's going to be a whopping blow for many people who have been struggling since last year.

At this stage I think expectations are low for this year

My main interest this year is seeing what's happening elsewhere

Mainland Europe and UK , numbers and decision making, public mood and reaction

Not too much interest here, politicians and public are boring and predictable

I'm not expecting packed stadiums and concerts, just the basics really. Hospitality and all retail open even with restrictions, no dumb travel limits.

Lads its a bit hysterical inhere cant understand varadker to be honest. when vulnerable are and over 70s vaxxed, hospitalizations and deaths will fall to near 0. Now my thinking is the rest of europe will not arse around restriciting themselves nor will UK once they can anyway safely open they will. there will be a torrent of people heading north. very little policing you can do and gardai will prob refuse to when so little cases and deaths, i think the rest of europe will drag us kicking and screaming out of lockdowns. plus likes of Ryanair and O'Leary wont stand for that and challenge it in high courts with best of lawyers as will other groups. JuST cant see restrictions past summer. cases/hospitalixations and deaths will drop like a stone come may, and because of vaccines the 4th wave wont come at all. if we hadnt vaccines of course we would have another wave but eventually herd immunity would prob kick in. maybe we need to stop getting tested if we are under 40 and drop the case numbers.

That was the Donald Trump solution to resolving the pandemic.

    - "There will be a concern about a fourth wave of some sort next winter and there will be huge caution about allowing mass gatherings until we get through another winter. That’s a hard message to sell and not what people want to hear but I think it’s better to be honest about these things.”

    - He says it will be “some time next year” before we will see full houses again in Croke Park or the Aviva stadium.

    - “My best guess is that we’ll have a relatively normal summer in that the shops will be open, personal services will be open and domestic tourism will be a real possibility. And potentially outdoor gatherings of 10 to 15 people, maybe even 50 but nothing beyond that.

    Irish Times

The neck on that creature, he really needs a flying kick into the real world. People are not going to put up with heavy-handed nonsense from the Government beyond the summer. Quarantine non-essential arrivals into air & sea ports for a fortnight and deliver the double jab in orderly fashion. Thus largely containing Covid and more importantly keeping vaccine-resistant variants out. "Fourth wave...restrictions well into next year...", talk about a total concession to gross incompetence. And pre-empting calamity after calamity from the HSE. How dare he flippantly introduce the notion of a decade lost, placating imbeciles into accepting two years of life wasted. Smarmy prat to even float such a bleak narrative that far into the future, people need to stand up to this bullshít.

with vulnerable vaxxed what would happen? if we just ignored it? surely numbers in hospital would rise but not to any degree to overwhelm the health service, deaths would be tiny. and all the while people getting herd imunity , treat it like a flu when over 70s are vaxxed, people can wear masks if they wish and not partake in society. other if they wish take the chance. ust do the old catch it , kill it bin it routine. wash hands.

    Absolutely.

Who actually still believes this is about our Health System?

    So...what's it about then?

Perhaps the McConkey interview was given to make Leo look like the 'good cop'? Sorry if that sounds conspiracy theory-ish but they are masters of PR these people.

    My thinking too

I'm depending on our european neighbours to help drag us out of restrictions

I wouldn't depend on government or public here to do it

Must be a relic of british rule or something the way we roll over and hide in our houses

The fact that Varadkar even dared to put 'lost decade' in the same sentence as 'lost year' should be the ultimate alarm bell moment for the public.

Very bizarre and dangerous for someone in his position of power to even suggest something like that. Could really stir the pot.

Is there masks now that the vulnerable can wear to protect themselves?

Or do we still depend on everyone wearing masks to prevent transmission to others

Christ, Im raging here another year of pissing about because the leaders don't have the balls to try and live with this virus. This 'when certain groups are vaccinated' etc is not a runner here in Ireland for this reason.

Is the Dutch/German etc deputy going around saying all this negative stuff ??

it's all to do with protecting the Hospitals but why are they not doing any work to do that ??? Nah we blame retail and hospitality

I happen to agree with you. But if Leo does not believe in what he says, then he shouldn't say something like that to a national newspaper. He really is the master of spin.

It's simple. If you want a normal life but feeling unwell, don't get tested. If you are really struggling then go to a hospital.

Getting tested is just bureaucracy. Keep those numbers low, and they can't imprison us. There is no cure, so it won't help.

Going to be fun seeing stadiums full all over in the UK and us still looking for vaccines next August.

The UK is storming ahead like lightning.

BBC - Holiday giant Tui bets on summer bounce back Link

Travel company Tui has said it expects to run 80% of its normal capacity for this summer, with 2.8 million customers already booked for its holidays.

CEO of Tui Fritz Joussen said - "We should do everything we can to quickly return to basic freedoms and make travel possible again."

"As expected, customers will book their summer holidays much later this year than in normal years. However, demand remains strong, people want to travel - this is shown by the already good number of bookings for the summer."

What you need is everyone over 54 vaccinated and everyone with a relevant health issue under 54 vaccinated.

No EU country is on track to get that achieved by this summer. All the criticism of the EU commission and EU bureaucracy we have heard from Eurosceptics seem to have a lot of truth to them.

Advice against non-essential travel likely to stay into 2022, warns Tánaiste

Speaking on Today FM’s The Last Word, Mr Varadkar said:

“The strong advice from Government at the moment and for a very long time has been to avoid non-essential travel abroad and I think that advice will most likely stay in place for the duration of the year if not into next year, unless we get to the point where we can develop reliable vaccine passports.”

However, when questioned about the vaccine passports, the Tánaiste said he shouldn’t have used that term because “the science doesn’t stand up for that at the moment”.

    Passports are coming and thankfully

    They're beneficial to ending restrictions

You can't have quarantine without passports, would be pointless

Israel and Greece announced a Monday deal to mutually recognize each others’ “green passports,” enabling the vaccinated to travel freely between the two countries.

The policy is “without any limitations, no self-isolation, nothing,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a press conference alongside his Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

I don't really get the point of them seeing as someone vaccinated can still spread the virus, there shouldn't be any free movement of travel in to Ireland until all our vulnerable and frontliners are vaccinated, then come one, come all, whether vaccinated or not once they have travel insurance.
