Election calls will grow to oust the current government and replace it with one that will introduce quarantine for all travellers.

Great to see less than a thousand cases, feels like a milestone. Hopefully we can keep it up. I wonder how we'll get on with the traditional Wednesday bump this week.

All caveats aside I didn't think we'd be announcing three figure case figures again before January was over. Despite all the bluster you hear elsewhere in the forum about people breaking rules and being on the verge on rising up and rioting in the streets, it's obvious that there is huge public buy in with people sticking to the rules. The numbers don't lie. Having said that we could enter a difficult period now, as numbers fall adherence will probably also fall. We've made amazing gains in a short space of time, the hard part will be maintaining that progress.

Very sad to see such death figures, but, you fear the worst when you see an unusually low number on a Monday. I think, unfortunately, we will see other days like this in the short term before things turn around.

Six new cases linked to the SA varient. Wait and see how it develops I guess.

And the RTE headline today is " Ireland's Covid-19 death toll passes 3,000" . Line 10 of the article before today's cases are reported.

While getting below 1000 cases per day is nothing to cheer about it is because of the collective effort of the population and a bit of recognition of the effort with a less negative headline would not hurt the nations psyche.

RTE's unrelenting doom and gloom reporting of this pandemic is giving me a pain in the rear. We all know it's bad. If I wanted misery I'd watch the late late show on a friday night.

They were ramping it up today. Proposing a national day of rememberence for the dead and then that misery porn of a poem at the end.

When it's over, I want a day of Independence, not rememberence.

If your population being vaccinated doesn't lift restrictions, what does?

    Genuine question.

Especially when we know that the vaccines (or at least one) are effective against the currently known variants, and the time that it would take to remodel the vaccine to account for new variants is a matter of weeks.

How far have we now come from March 2020 that even a fully vaccinated population won't lead to a return to normality?

What in the actual f*ck is going on?

What is the endgame here? How do we return to normality if vaccinating the bloody population won't do it? Is it just lockdown forever then?

Any 15 trained monkeys from Dublin zoo could do it better than this lot.

Another year destroyed with Leo and his no travelling until Christmas. We`ll have no economy left if we keep these lockdowns going the way they want to. All for something that is quite impossible ie zero covid. Its a fantasy if they think that zero covid is even remotely possible.

Another 6 weeks of this crap.

I wouldn’t be pronouncing anything about death rates yet. A lot to come still in next couple of weeks unfortunately.

If you take 25 days from positive swab to deaths unfortunately true.

1,000 cases is roughly giving 10 deaths 3-4 weeks later. Hence the value of cases dropping rapidly. If we plateaued at 2,500 it would be tough with deaths and on hospitals.

We will open up gradually after majority of the vulnerable are vaccinated. If vaccination is effective against all variants more restrictions may not be needed again

The huge amount of cases this month (96,000) shows that the vast majority won't need hospitalisation.

Covid may become endemic and if that is the case we are likely to see new variants emerge at some point, be it 1 year or 5 years.

Should we just wait around for that possibility to occur then?

You know - I was of the same mindset until I hear the announcements today.

I really don't think they will open up until 99.999999999999999% of the population is vaccinated. That's this governments and Nphets line of thought.

There doesn't seem to any light at the end of the tunnel.

So the South Arican Variant has arrived. It was always inevitable without travel restrictions and monitoring. Yet another chance to get in front of the virus wasted and now we will all suffer.

So you are suggesting working what? March through to July for Primary School kids without a meaningful break? That is a complete waste of time as children will have zoned out by the end of April and would do much more damage than what is happening at the moment. Just in case your wondering myself like most other teachers want to get back to school ASAP. I will be happy and raring to go whenever the call is made

I'm suggesting bringing holidays forward. Have the midterm now. Bring forward the summer hols. All to create more face time.

They repeatedly said that their strategy presumes there will be more variants that it won't be effective against.

They also conveyed a wilful ignorance of the objectives of a "zero covid" strategy.

The point is to get the levels of transmission down to such a manageable level that we can track and trace them effectively and stop them in their tracks.

The strategy they're going with instead is rolling lockdowns even after vaccination with a presumption that there's loads of variants going around that we can't do anything about.

    It's complete and utter garbage.

What difference does it make if the South African variant has arrived? We are locked down anyway - reduced transmission of any variant, will have the vulnerable vaccinated by the time we ease restrictions, there is no evidence that the variant is more dangerous, and Moderna believe the current vaccine to be effective against it.

    So what is the issue?

Possibly one of the most depressing days of the epidemic for me.

Case numbers dropping steadily but government doing all in its power to ensure there is no light or hope

Well the vaccine may work against these variants in terms of preventing severe illness. The data in Israel looks promising and many scientists believe it will be effective these new variants

The importing of the variant was inevitable regardless of actions taken. The key thing is do we have enough measures in place to squash it once it's in? Nope. Not even close.

    That doesn't answer my question.

The vaccine working against these already known variants is irrelevant, as the government has already indicated restrictions will remain regardless of this fact - even with the population vaccinated.

The government are concerned about new, undiscovered, possibily undeveloped variants.

How long do we wait around in restrictions for these variants to develop, if the virus becomes endemic as is certainly possible? We could discover a new variant in 5 years if Covid becomes endemic. Do we just keep restrictions forever then to legislate for that possibility?

We all knew January would be tough. I think March by April we will begin to turn a corner. Hope Im right. Confident I will be tbh
