We're a nation of rule breakers.

    Perhaps we need more enforcement.

But but but... what about the teachers holidays? God forbid they would be put out at all by this whole thing

Up to a few weeks ago the only people I know, or know of, who had got it were nurses or teachers.

This is baffling. How can we have restrictions with the entire country vaccinated? That logic suggests restrictions forever, which will absolutely not happen.

So if vaccinating the entire country doesn't end this, what does?

At the minute there is no hard evidence to say that the new variants evade the vaccines. Surely they knew from the beginning of all this that the virus would likely mutate. They are either managing expectations or something else is going on. The jump in cases last month frightened them and I think most of what Leo and co are saying is coming from extreme caution and planting seeds in case things don't work out as hoped, rather than actual evidence.

It is the epitome of a "hope for the best prepare for the worst" mindset. It's often seen after a person experiences disappointment after disappointment. Unfortunately It's a narrative that when used by those in influence can have a damaging impact on the minds of the people.

It's not as if they just came to the decision, they've been consistent and NPHET agree. Our strategy has a four week review built in. COVID Zero has none, it just goes on until whenever.

Covid zero has no strategy built in, because it's not being considered so why would it have. Sure NZ has a strategy built in.

And who would be looking for a 4 week update when you and your family and your friends are able to live relatively normal anyway.

No date on when quarantine will come in for SA and Brazil.

This looks like it won't happen at all.
It needs legislation and that will take time. Even "quickly" will mean weeks.

Said their actual strategy won't work as a defence for not implementing it

    Haha

If you're quoting Braveheart for support there may be some flaws in your plan!

Well he succeeded in invading lower England and sacking York. So he did what was said to be impossible;) And historically he did do that also.

The very isolated rock in the Pacific again? It needs a timeframe, which can't even be guessed at.

A 4 week review in theory sure, in reality doesn't sound like there will be any significant easing before May and of course no guarantee that there won't be further restrictions after that anyway

We know things can be brought in overnight, so there is clearly no political will to introduce strict quarantine measures.

Not sure how much sacking is involved in any of this! It all sounds like an anything you want to do self-help books.

Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

[caveat - nothing to do with COVID]

There won't be anything open before Easter Monday would be my guess

then maybe retail open at a push

Then a slow slow painfully slow reopening with hospitality not open until after the June Bank holiday

Couldn't have the country open for a bank holiday as we've had everything **** for 6/7 of the last bank holidays

I'm just giving an example of where everyone said no and they were wrong! It was a light hearted little quote.

How can you be certain zero covid being is impossible? All the definites have been proven wrong time after time with this illness. You're just giving an opinion.

They have mentioned 100-200 cases a day. We should see that in March at the latest. TBH the rest of it is all very 2020! By May we'll have vaccinated all the at risk groups. We should also have full country data from Israel. Once we go down to Level 3 and below we will not be reversing tack.

I mean it's becoming everything to do with Covid. This isn't just a period or a stretch of something anymore. These are defining times and we are lying on our beds or on our coaches and allowing complete and utter incompetence of the highest order to burn the whole house down.

I am but we do know it doesn't have an obvious expiry date and that it would involve us locking ourselves away from the world for an undetermined time.

Sure they didn't seem confident that hospitality would open by May, I can't see that opening as early in March at this juncture tbh. Sure the vaccines will make a difference but with supply issues, pace of rolling them out and them hinting that there could still be restrictions after this it wouldn't inspire much confidence in the current strategy.

    Haha

Without the north it won’t work

NPHET have looked at it and said it isn’t possible. It’s a pipe dream being pushed by those not in power

Fair enough. But we're doing that already, shutting down etc. I don't know, i'm not that invested in Covid free either tbh.

Just when I hear someone say we'll have the vulnerable vaccinated by this date and such and such, it's logical and great in theory.

But this dose is throwing curveballs all over the place. It's hard to be certain.

I think they are looking at worst cases and making sure we don't imagine a vaccine immediately resets everything. It's a grim and unpleasant approach but think we're really past all the platitudes.

Legislation for seizing money which was believed to belong to the IRA was brought in over a few hours IIRC in the 80's
