Yeah, but they're only students, what would they know. In't that right, Norma?

To be fair, the same ISSU actually wanted 6th, 5th and 3rds back last week, until they actually got lashed out of it by their own members. Interesting that they've now totally changed their tune

"Parents, teachers, SNAs, advocates have all received abuse online this week. Ultimately, they share the same goal – to get children their education, and give them some semblance of normality during this god-awful time."

Some of them have given abuse at well. The online behaviour of some folks tasked with educating children has been shocking. Just look at Adam Harris’ twitter account

Student groups are always listened to as part of the infamous "partners in education" group that Norma constantly refers to, or so Norma would have us believe. Funny how one by one, that narrative is being dispelled.

Uhhh, afaik right now I think they just wanted people's opinions because the ISSU can only influence the governments decision and wanted to see what the overall majority was so they could present it at Fridays meeting, but the full extent of the survey in depth can be seen here which I'm slowly going through, so they might have explain it here although I'm not too sure if they do, sorry.

    Hopefully that embeds.

Thanks a million for that TTLF.

I see they want classes to continue until May and also calculated grades to be an option. I can't see those desires as being compatible given the experience of last year.

I'm also wondering did respondents have to register to vote or could anyone with a link vote or vote multiple times if they so wished?

Everyone shuld tell their own contacts to isolate when the get the result. The contact tracers still follow up.

    Some good data on it
    https://www.hse.ie/eng/services/news/newsfeatures/covid19-updates/covid-19-testing-and-contact-tracing-update-21-january-2021.pdf

The point is, that is not good enough to send people back to work in a super risky environment without this important element functioning properly.

This was my exact thought when I seen the results of the "survey". I am wondering did a vocal minority just spam vote. Was there bias in the questions ? It is hardly a very scientific survey I would say :D

Interesting. 73% of students feeling unsafe.
75% saying govt have been communicating poorly.
71% saying the govt is not giving enough support.

    That is fairly convincing.

So students aren't happy with the govt., I think we can say teachers aren't happy with the govt, just left for the parents council to do or say something.

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck right

I think its super safe bet to say that Parents in general aren't happy at all, My father sat the A Levels in Northern Ireland, so a lot of the time we have the British news on because he grew up to it, and he was saying to me how he's really surprised that unlike the A Levels/GCSE's being told it's cancelled, we're still stuck in limbo. His idea behind it was that Ireland is more education driven for its children, so its always way more of a priority to get schools working as quick as possible, whilst this isn't as big of an issue or concern in the UK he said.

From my own viewings of the BBC since it's always on, I think the UK made the right move with cancelling their exams. A friend of mine said they're doing continued assessment now and his grades have been higher than before getting averages from the smaller tests. He gets 6's (highest grade is 9) but, if he was in school he would be getting 4s/5s. :pac:

But I wonder why the parents unions didn't do any polls themselves? or if they did, its not public knowledge right now.

I don't think we'll ever have an idea on what happens until it happens, just like last year the idea was to do traditional exams until the U turn on May 8th. Knowing how many times we've had U turns in the last few months/weeks, It's bound to happen again.

So I guess, for now we're going to be stuck in limbo. I'm not overly stressed about it, I can only try my best with assignments and ask for help when I need it. We can review the situation come late Feb since as I said before, the world could possibly be a "totally" different place just like November VS January.

You're welcome for the link! Happy to help. If you have any questions on the insights to how it's going for an actual student I'll always reply! :D

Has the NPC been involved in any of this so far, anyone know? I've heard nothing.

You're right not to get overly stressed. Head down and do what you can. Keep focused and the best of luck to you.

I mean like WTF. This make headline sums it up really.........

"Ireland ‘nowhere near’ easing Level 5 but schools could reopen, Varadkar says"

    https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/ireland-nowhere-near-easing-level-5-but-schools-could-reopen-varadkar-says-1068105.html

Talk about a contradiction in terms.

Talk about a contradiction in terms.

    Where's the contradiction?

This was explained by Ronan Glynn

"Speaking at a press briefing by the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) earlier, Dr Ronan Glynn said that although there were no “zero-risk” environments, the re-opening of schools was in the best interests of children.

He explained that NPHET’s advice for people to stay at home was partly intended to allow limited sections of society to continue, and that health officials recognised that some people could not stay at home because their work would not allow them to do so."

So yes level 5 won't be lifted anytime soon but yet schools could go back in time

Schools were open during level 5 in October

It's too early for all schools to be back but maybe not limited students like special needs

Take them out of the convention centre and put them all back in the Dail.

WTF indeed. Turning attention now back to all children and those in the school community- if they haven't got a handle on covid yet and hospitals say they haven't seen the peak that available beds are a huge concern and we're sliding into Feb., why on earth should schools reopen.
Before I send my kids back, levels would have to be low, and enhanced/properly functioning safety measures would have to be in place first.
Jesus I'm sick to my back teeth now of being angry about this and having to worry about the two most precious things I have in my life. It really is so tiring and harmful having this dragged out for months on end. Government aren't listening. I no longer trust them to lead us at all.
Everything the unions are asking for now need to be in place as well for ALL our children especially in light of a new more virulent strain. Don't get me started on the scariness of the S.A one, and not responding to current vaccines, being even more contagious, etc. Can't face that one yet. All articles I see I bypass right now for my own health.
People have enough to be worrying about. Government needs to step the F up.

    Am I seeing this correctly?

On the news we're hearing about huge numbers in hospital and many poor people losing their lives and unfortunately more to come. The govt are talking about an extension of lockdown.

But yet minutes later we have a headline report on how a special school in Tyrone (with a great range of facilities and staff) is staying open...and now a report on how people are struggling with home schooling!
Then telling people that govt hopes to be open on Feb 1st!!

    What the actual fúck??

Do you have a link for the article reporting an opening for Feb 1st? Jesus

Was it the six one news who suggested schools to reopen on Feb 1st and who said it?

If they are just reporting what Norma is intimating then I'll just ignore.
