Actually it's the centre second we all know and love today that was the complication, first as an indirect seconds addition to a basic movement then the direct seconds movements came along. Until well into the early 1950's subseconds were the order of the day for most. Cheaper to make and the movements could be made thinner and they were more robust than the indirect seconds "complication".
