Just tried to get on that webinar and it's at capacity!! FFS. Out of our team of 10, only one person got in.

    You're missing nothing, it'll be a whitewash!

That is...well I'd say it's shocking, but unfortunately it's completely in line with how the whole mess has been run from the start.

There is so much dissatisfaction with the INTO out there, they need to play this situation carefully.

That webinar is gone live on YouTube, or so the staff WhatsApp group is telling me.

I'm now watching a livestream on youtube. Interestingly they only shared the youtube link with those already on the webinar.

And you can neither comment or ask questions on youtube. We are effectively silenced.

Ronan Glynn just said schools are safe, that this is still NPHET's view.

I know that we were asked to submit questions via the INTO.

The chat was enabled initially. Comments against the plan were flying in so they disabled the chat. :pac:

Is it not still enabled? I'm watching it now, the comments are on fire. Of course, that might just be YouTube.

So it is. I was going by what was said on our school whatsapp maybe it was in relation to the official stream.

Personally I can't bring myself to watch it.

save the trouble and jazz it up

Hi carr62, predicted grades are inherently unfair. Our system isn't set up for it. There is a lack of consistency in the data used (my English HL class got x amount of tests while the teacher in the class next to me gave Y amount of tests multiply this out across every subject and school). The Department of Education are incapable of applying a bell curve in the impartial way that the SEC applies it (as evidenced by last year's debacle). Teachers and students were treated awfully last year. Also remember we had NO contact with our students once predicted grades were called last year. If they were to be brought in LC students would finish classes now. Anyone looking for predicted grades this year,in my opinion, much like last year, does not understand the ramifications of what they are asking for.

Also I'm reading a lot of cases where people are using the excuse of "not having the course covered " as a justification for predicated grades. In an ordinary year most subjects the course would not be covered at this stage of the year.

The way forward in my opinion, is to bring classes in on rota when safe (50% in at a time) week on week off. Homework/exam papers/ study during week off and adjust the exam papers to allow greater flexibility in answers to allow for inconsistencies in access to remote learning.

Interesting insight there History Queen, as you're a secondary school teacher I do fully agree going fully predictive grades probably isn't the best route of action, but then again, what is? I'm able to admit that I'm not sure really how predictive grading would work and I know you're in the position where you know how that works, but I'm also in a position where I would probably do well with predictive grading in regards to my first choice course which isn't a ridiculous big amount of points. I'm not really sure as of right now, there IS a way to go forward.

The idea behind people being behind in their course/it not being covered is somewhat true. I've had a great quality of teaching in lockdown, but there's certainly schools/students at a disadvantage when it comes to class, and they really are way behind where the course should be for this time of year even if it's not usually all covered by now, (with frequent drop outs of calls, messy online teaching and worse quality due to technical issues etc.) Even in my own example, as I've mentioned this before we should be done our Geography Field study and the writeup by now, but we have to leave it until February at the earliest. This is quite late to be doing it, (it was originally planned for Easter last year!) I think the idea that students also struggle to really retain the information taught during home school is also a real issue to many families. I know we had to re-go over Brazil again when it was taught in Lockdown for Geography, because the information was taught very quickly and poorly Online, where I was just doing pass paper questions and not really retaining anything properly, everyone is different in that regard too, remember that.

The theory of the 50% capacity is interesting, and does have logic to it, I would like to be in school being taught at some point, even if it's only a day or two a week, but we really need to let transmission be suppressed until then. We'll never get to the point of a safer community on Ireland if we jump the gun, I mean it took 3 months to get transmission on the island down back in the first lockdown, and now we're about 10x worse than that.

Even if we have to sit a LC, I do hope the exams are really amended to knock stuff off instead of just "adding extra questions." Many students would be doing grinds now in subjects they struggle in, but as of currently, for some people I know, they can't do grinds because of the pandemic at this point in time, so they can't improve with help on their subjects, (like me and German, or my gf and Maths) in a 1 on 1 basis.

We're just going to see how things go, hopefully there's a safe and fair option for everyone, and I very much value your insights as a teacher towards this thread, so thank you for that! :D

Abigail Collins. This is the lady who publicly admits that schools are needed to be open for childcare.

I can't bring myself to watch that webinar because I know it will be the same nonsense they've been spewing from the beginning.

Just got word that out of a class of 9, I have 3 who are definitely attending on Thursday, 5 maybes (who will be definites when they hear about the others) and 1 no. I am still expected to teach and do online work for the children who don't attend.

Personally, I'm okay with going back to school. I hate this online rubbish. I'm nervous in case I bring Covid home to my fiance who is a type 1 diabetic and his dad who is coming home tomorrow after having an operation. An acknowledgement that schools are not fully safe and close contact testing back up and running and I would feel better. But for now, I'll be back on Thursday with my little ones and I will make them as safe as I possibly can.

The irony of these all pontificating about school safety while sitting snugly at home - at least in separate rooms - isn't lost on me.

Using YouTube as well, chat is absolutely fuming, not that they care in their safe little remote meeting.

Do we expect anything different from something that is being facilitated by the DES.

I didn't realise this was a lecture. I thought it was supposed to be engagement.
