Yeah, we mostly altered our behaviour again.

However a large number of people seem to have gone shopping in the post-Christmas sales. Not a huge amount. We look about average for the EU. However it coincided with what was almost certainly the actual peak of the virus.

If you were in one of those large Dublin shopping centres that can hold 5,000+ during this time, then you were sure to have been rubbing shoulders with numerous infected people. Who knows if this could lead to another rise in cases. Would be due about now.

It's pretty pointless at present as restrictions are not going to change for a good while

It is they are entitled so they are now safe and then should be able to do as they wish then

if you click the 'Regional CSVs' you can get the data for individual countries

That's not how it works after you get the vaccine, and god help us if that's what people think.

Rising sharply - just like swabs, cases, hospitalisations and ICU did

We might put out some really jarring numbers in the next week or two

If we've dropped from circa 6k cases to 3.5k cases in a few days. Could we drop from 3.5k to 1-2k soon enough?

    1,616 are men / 1,924 are women
•54% are under 45 years of age
•The median age is 42 years old
•1,119 are in Dublin, 416 in Cork, 200 in Galway, 182 in Louth, 169 in Waterford, and remaining 1,483 are spread across all other counties

    No chance.

It will be April before we get to that.

I fear not. Cases tend to rise fast and fall slow. I think we may bump along with higher cases (maybe around 2K+) for a while.

My 82 year old dad is very high risk - so we've been really careful with him and my mam. As I live alone, I bubble with them and at one point we were going to go to my sister's family for Xmas (4 of them) and maybe have some outdoor or short, socially distanced catch ups with other siblings over Christmas. As things progressed the week before and numbers started to escalate we cancelled everything and I just went to my mam and dad for the 2 days over Christmas (after isolating beforehand and getting tested). As you can imagine to go from the annual 15 people crammed around the dinner table to just the 3 of us was a big change.

Yay us, right? However, what I have found about this lockdown is the terrible effect it's had on them, especially my Dad. He has gotten more withdrawn, no energy, sleeps later and has had conversations this week that he feels the end is nigh. It may well be the case that his condition has progressed, but on the otherhand I feel the isolation, not seeing his kids and grandkids and losing any sense of purpose has had a huge effect. We ask ourselves is the risk of a visit with us and/or the kids worth it to spur him on, but then remember that a lonely covid death in hospital isn't worth thinking about. With the vaccine within touching distance for them, and the hope of all being together so imminent we can only hope that he holds out for better times, even if it is just a short time that he gets.
My (longwinded) point is, we made these decisions knowing there was a likelihood that this would be his last Christmas, and though it's had a really tough impact on him, we wouldn't change that, as there's still hope we might get a good spring/summer with him.

Like other posters here I despair to read of people who "did what the rules allowed" or "didn't do anything wrong" and tried to find ways around the restrictions and then complain when they find themselves in another lockdown with a looming healthcare disaster.

April? Not a hope it will be that long Id say. Should be under 2k before the end of Jan.

The speed of the fall was enhanced by the tightening in the requirements for testing.

Once we reopen this cases are likely to go up again.

That would be the worst outcome for the health system, a sustained level of high cases.

100 of the last two days reported deaths happen this month. By my count according to hse figures 18 deaths was in ICU this month so how many of that 100 died in care/nursing homes?

Are there figures of the rate of patients in ICU who are nursing home residents? Supposed to have these all vaccinated by mid February, should ease pressure on the health service and save a lot of lives.

I would have agreed until Kilkenny31 predicted today that the peak over be the end of the week and back to good times by the end of January. So we must all be wrong.

Looks unlikely, GP referrals still high after a drop a few days ago.

If you want to protect nursing homes the first thing you have to do is control the spread of the disease in the wider community - that's how it gets in the first place.

What amazes me is that you can acknowledge the risk posed to nursing home residents and other vulnerable members of society - but will never acknowledge the merits of restrictions designed to suppress the virus, which, in the end, helps to protect people's lives.

The median age of our cases is still rising steadily.

14 days ago the 14 day median was 35.

There were 146 in ICU yesterday. 158 today. Those deaths are not recent. They need to be more transparent on these things. I'll bet my left bollock that deaths will be below 20 tomorrow.

Hope this lad doesn't be at the auld gambling too much.

Horrendous death numbers, but unfortunately to be expected. :( May they rest in peace. Absolutely heartbreaking, I don't think many of us expected we'd be in such a bad situation again after we came through last March/April/May.

The graphs of previous peaks from here and elsewhere show a sharp drop initially then a slow tail off.
