According to the data presented, socialising went to pre-pandemic levels before Christmas (perhaps compared to Feb 2020?) and resulted in us having the worst 14-day incidence in the world. I'm sure Tony and the lads are absolutely blue in the face saying Stay at Home, but believe it or not, some people are still not hearing it.

I hope posts like this are just a deep level of sarcasm I am not getting?

Like....what is the point of a human history worth of laws if there is no enforcement? Shouting blue in the face, really? Well let's abolish any and all laws tomorrow, get rid of any and all policing, and just tell people how we expect them to act on any and all issues without any enforcement or consequences. How do you think that will work out? Oh but the poor government will shout at them their expectations until they are blue in the face...

Philip Nolan explanation of backlog cases was shocking.

We can see the swab numbers, does he think were fools.

Why is he defending the indefensible.

Something like that would really bring into question anything they try to tell us.

    Half truths, mis-truths, shocking

BBC NI reporting that 91,954 vaccines have been administered in NI so far.

68,664 have received one Pfizer dose
13,949 he received two Pfizer doses
    9,341 have received Astra Zeneca

So 78,005 individuals have had at least one injection so far which amounts to about 4% of the population of NI. Long way to go, but I think that represents a doubling of vaccinations in a week.

But in the weeks leading up to Christmas we were allowed to meet people. It could be argued that the prospect of January lockdown encouraged people to mix more because they knew they only had a short window to see their friends and family who they might not have seen for months.
There are many reasons for why numbers increased, yes people spread the virus but will nphet be as quick to roll graphics on how leaving the airports and ports open effected the Christmas spread.

Yes that tends to happen when you stop people seeing each other for at least six weeks and also close places to socialise

The threat of a January lockdown even before the six weeks has started definitely encourages people to make the most of opportunities

It was all a bit odd. He was showing us a chart which showed there was a backlog (cases today could be tests from the last 3 days) while telling us there wasn't a backlog.

Anyone have the number of people vaccinated in Ireland handy?

We are vaccinating with what we have, how do you expect to administer vaccines we don't yet have in our hands?

It seems like we are 'back to normal' and it takes 2-3 days to turn swabs into verified positive cases

So daily case numbers announced daily are actually upto 3 days old.

I saw a story yesterday where a UK nurse was talking about an old lady admitted to ICU who was not going to make it. The lady had asked her family not to visit her at Christmas because she was nervous about covid. But her adult children insisted and brought kids to granny and she got Covid.
Somehow that story is just heart breaking. I said to himself do you think something like that happened in Ireland over Christmas and he said you can be bloody sure it did. Why, says I. Because people cling to notions of what is normal and they won't let go, he said.

Ann O'Connor said it's close to 40,000 in the last 7 days.

It was all a bit odd. He was showing us a chart which showed there was a backlog (cases today could be tests from the last 3 days) while telling us there wasn't a backlog.

He actually said there's always a delay with reporting cases. Generally it's 24-72 hours. So some cases reported today are from swabs over the previous 72hrs. That's the norm. The backlog (taking in excess of 72hrs) has been cleared.
So going forward the cases being announced are from swabs over the past 72hrs.

Makes sence, then swabs start going up, your reporting over the previous 3 days, so cases will look lower then swabs. Then when swabs reduce like now, the cases are being reported over 72hrs when the swabs were higher.

Saw a tweet (which could be straight from a WhatsApp conspiracy group for all I know) that a medical person 9n BBC said today that there may be many people with immunity to covid 19 as a result of catching previous covid variants of the common cold.

Could be/probably nonsense, and has that ring of plausibility that means it could be just another one doing the rounds but maybe someone has a view.

Luke O’Neill has talked before about the common cold giving some element of immunity in some people, and that more research was needed

I nearly lost you there at main stream media but hung in for the rest of the post. So it's their fault people lost the run of themselves in December and Christmas?
Wouldn't be partially the governments fault for opening up during silly season?

That's some mental gymnastics but ok.

There is one thing I blame the main stream media for though. Sh!te telly.

    source.gif

Mainstream media’s role in Ireland over Covid would make a very interesting study. I’ve posted on this many times before. If they stuck to more facts instead of worry metrics, Amárach polls, and the politics of it all, people might not have switched off.
Do you agree or disagree that George Lee is supposed to be a Science / Environment reporter for RTE? He seems to have morphed into NPHET spokesperson instead, and to top it off - doesn’t even understand the data he’s spewing and constantly makes erroneous statements. I find this extremely irritating. Does he report on any other scientific news?
Fergal Bowers is much more balanced.
I didn’t anywhere in my post suggest it was the media’s fault or NPHET’s re Christmas. I’ve previously also posted re the perfect storm of conditions re Christmas surge:
    1. Lockdown for Spring - last to emerge from it in Europe.
    2. First into Lockdown in Europe in October - told Christmas could be ‘meaningful’. Cue people making all sorts of plans to get through the latest restrictions then, this lockdown with poor Communication from NPHET - aka Level 2-5 overnight and the Government questioning its rationale - had many people doubtful of its necessity. I say this as meeting people daily who would always pull together in a crisis - there were question marks from the public re Level 5 in Oct.
    3. Pressure cooker activities - people cooped up for weeks set free in December - frantically shopping, meeting people, getting in as much as possible. Some clearly completely losing the run of themselves, shebeens, house parties, big family gatherings, you name it.
    4. U.K. variant and increased transmissibility. What people got away with before re parties etc, before - they didn’t at Christmas as we’d a new arrival in town - Covid B 117 U.K. variant. This message from NPHET this evening was lost on me - they seem to be at pains to limit the new variant as the single major issue that’s changed despite even Prof Nolan’s forecasting models not predicting these numbers. It seems they’re more focused on figure pointing and reopening and it just seems bizarre. What is the intention of that? I also would be concerned about this moving forward - will NPHET want Level 5 indefinitely?

The vaccine roll out order was supposed to be
    1.over 65s in care homes
    2. Health care workers
    3. Over 70s
    4. Health care workers not in direct contact with patients

Why are we seeing health care workers going before over 65s in care homes? My friends missus is a nurse on maternity leave. She was booked in for last Friday even though she won't have contact with patients for another 6 months.

Seems like the order has been pissed all over.

I would not discount it. There is still a lot to learn about this virus. Unfortunately many people may never know they even had it.

Nope, two plans going on at the same time for Groups 1&2. First week was done in hospitals as a sort of test.

Going on the current case numbers or seems, if true, it's not that many

I would imagine for operational and/or logistics reasons. If you cannot vaccinate care home patients on a particular date/time, you might as well start on the next group if they're available. Otherwise you'll cause even further delays.
