Finally some relative clarity on the vaccine, too many people thinking it was like drinking from the Holy Grail.

Vaccine is pretty much useless going on that announcement. We don’t know, we’re not sure.

It might do this,it could do that , it may last 6 months or 18 months we don’t know that either.

    Lord god we’re doomed.

    Farcical

Zero reason to be part of the trial so.

    Why what was said?
Did they clarify it’s not a silver bullet and we will need SD and masks going forward for a while after herd immunity at 70%?

Stopped at a checkpoint earlier taking the cat to the vet. Just told them where I was going and that was it. Sure you could just tell them any old shíte, how would they know you're lying?
Lying face to face doesn't come naturally to most people. They'd rather not go out than have to bull**** a Garda at a checkpoint.

If talking complete bull**** to someone face to face comes naturally to you, then you probably work in sales. Human beings with a soul find it a very uncomfortable experience.

Very obviously side stepping the how did this go so badly wrong \ couldn't this current peak have been foreseen type questions.

The knots some people will get themselves into to put the blame on NPHET or the 'demon dictator' Hologhan for basically everything. Same posters every time as well.

Like, give your head a shake there.

I don’t have anything against NPHET and what they’re trying to do. I think we all need to pull together to get through this.
The biggest problem I have with them & the conference is the lack of data. We cannot see the screens behind the doctors properly, we rely on what they say which can be short and always dominated by Stay at home. Mentions of people in the ‘park’, this kind of messaging is wrong and this conference should focus on the medical data, the vaccine data and all latest facts relating to hospitals, etc.
I did have a very big problem with our reopening plan over the summer which stated we wouldn’t re opened at all until August 10th originally.
I also had an issue with Dr Holohan walking back in government buildings in Oct and declaring Level 5 when many counties were in Level 2.

Watch the HSE briefings instead on Thursdays, loads of data.

Yes some SD precautions would still be required to a degree and unsure if annual refresh of vaccine needed.

I'm going to guess it was along the lines of we don't know if it stops transmission etc which anyone who's been following vaccine news would know, that it's still unknown. Unknown at this stage how often you'd have to get it etc

I could be wrong. Not bothered watching it

That’s very true, but I do think there are people absolving NPHET, George Lee and the mainstream media for their constant doom over the Summer / early Autumn. It did reduce compliance as people switched off in my opinion.

I nearly lost you there at main stream media but hung in for the rest of the post. So it's their fault people lost the run of themselves in December and Christmas?
Wouldn't be partially the governments fault for opening up during silly season?

That's some mental gymnastics but ok.

There is one thing I blame the main stream media for though. Sh!te telly.

That we don't know how long it will work for, whether it will prevent transmission and as a result we need a much higher level of coverage. Data gathering ongoing on all of this.

Sorry for giving you a headache but that’s a pretty rough summary of what was said.

They didn’t know or couldn’t be sure of anything really.

The vaccines are new, it will take time to answer those questions. The trials went well so there are strong indications that the vaccines could be a game changer.

There is no point in someone saying the vaccines will end the pandemic or all will be normal in a couple of months. We just have to wait.

Are the experts you mention NPHET?
I’d imagine the WHO would announce if the vaccine was no good.
Also we knew there were question marks about how long immunity lasts and wether or not the virus was spread by people who had been vaccinated.

i wouldn't think postal deliveries fall under 'bare minimum' the goverment should be looking at within a lockdown. No.

Not sure what that's supposed to mean? People cannot buy things from store, and if people cannot receive things online, then what? The rich will always find a way, what about the regular folk?

And this includes medical monitoring equipment and other necessities, in response to the 'are you waiting for your tamagochi' arrogant post that replied to me.

Not going to be a big deal if the vulnerable need an annual shot similar to the flu jab ..
Get enough vaccinated and let’s see what happens.. not going to know for sure till we are 7 or 8 months into giving vaccine.

According to the data presented, socialising went to pre-pandemic levels before Christmas (perhaps compared to Feb 2020?) and resulted in us having the worst 14-day incidence in the world. I'm sure Tony and the lads are absolutely blue in the face saying Stay at Home, but believe it or not, some people are still not hearing it.

But in the weeks leading up to Christmas we were allowed to meet people. It could be argued that the prospect of January lockdown encouraged people to mix more because they knew they only had a short window to see their friends and family who they might not have seen for months.
There are many reasons for why numbers increased, yes people spread the virus but will nphet be as quick to roll graphics on how leaving the airports and ports open effected the Christmas spread.

Does this mean that it’s pretty much being given on a trial basis to see what happens?

That’s one way of putting it if you want.

In reality the virus is only around a year old, there’s no possible way for them to know how long immunity will last yet.
Prof Butler clearly said that there are some signals that it may help with reducing transmission but they don’t have enough data yet, and that if it does reduce transmission we’ll need less coverage than if it only prevents symptoms of the disease. She mentioned that at the moment the vaccine helps on an individual level and they don’t have enough information yet to know if spread of disease will be reduced.

If the vaccine stops illness and symptoms it can hardly be described as useless.

That same poster said the slow roll out of the vaccine resulting in avoidable deaths wasn't an issue . I wouldn't take it to heart
